An unresolved problem in J/psi phenomenology is a systematic understanding of the differential photoproduction cross section, dsigma/dz [gamma + p -> J/psi + X], where z= E_psi/E_gamma in the proton rest frame. In the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, fixed-order perturbative calculations of color-octet mechanisms suffer from large perturbative and nonperturbative corrections that grow rapidly in the endpoint region, z -> 1. In this paper, NRQCD and soft collinear effective theory are combined to resum these large corrections to the color-octet photoproduction cross section. We derive a factorization theorem for the endpoint differential cross section involving the parton distribution function and the color-octet J/psi shape functions. A one loop matching calculation explicitly confirms our factorization theorem at next-to-leading order. Large perturbative corrections are resummed using the renormalization group. The calculation of the color-octet contribution to dsigma/dz is in qualitative agreement with data. Quantitative tests of the universality of color-octet matrix elements require improved knowledge of shape functions entering these calculations as well as resummation of the color-singlet contribution which accounts for much of the total cross section and also peaks near the endpoint.

The $O(v^2)$ relativistic correction for inelastic $J/psi$ photoproduction, in which heavy quark pairs are in the dominant Fock state of the quarkonium, is studied in the framework of NRQCD factorization. An assessment of its significance, particularly in comparison to the color octet contributions, is made. It is found that the impact on the energy distribution is negative in certain regions of phase space. The predictions are compared with photoproduction data from DESY-HERA.
We study $J/Psi$ production at photon-photon colliders, which can be realised with Compton scaterring of laser photons at $e^+e^-$ colliders. We find that the production rate through the color-octet channel is comparable to that through the color-singlet channel. Experimentally the two mechanisms can be studied separately because the processes have different signals.

To test the color-octet model of heavy quarkonium productions, we propose $psi $-productions at small-$p_T$ regions in polarized $pp$ collisions for the forthcoming RHIC polarized experiments, whose experimental test at $sqrt s=50$ GeV might be very promising.

We present a nonperturbative QCD calculation of elastic $J/psi$ meson production in photon-proton scattering at high energies. Using light cone wave functions of the photon and vector mesons, and the framework of the model of the stochastic QCD vacuum, we calculate the differential and integrated elastic cross sections for $gamma p goto J/psi p $ . With an energy dependence following the two-pomeron model we are able to give a consistent description of the integrated cross sections and the differential cross sections at low $|t|$ in the range from 20 GeV up to the highest HERA energies. We discuss different approaches to introduce saturation and find no specific effects up to energies presently available. We also calculate and compare to experiments the cross section for $upsilon$ photoproduction.

Using the data on coherent $J/psi$ photoproduction in Pb-Pb ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) obtained in Runs 1 and 2 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we determined with a good accuracy the nuclear suppression factor of $S_{Pb}(x)$ in a wide range of the momentum fraction $x$, $10^{-5} leq x leq 0.04$. In the small-$x$ region $x < 10^{-3}$, our $chi^2$ fit favors a flat form of $S_{Pb}(x) approx 0.6$ with approximately a 5% accuracy for $x=6 times 10^{-4} - 10^{-3} $ and a 25% error at $x=10^{-4}$. At the same time, uncertainties of the fit do not exclude a slow decrease of $S_{Pb}(x)$ in the small-$x$ limit. At large $x$, $S_{Pb}(x)$ is constrained to better than 10% precision up to $x=0.04$ and is also consistent with the value of $S_{Pb}(x)$ at $langle x rangle =0.042$, which we extract from the Fermilab data on the $A$ dependence of the cross section of coherent $J/psi$ photoproduction on fixed nuclear targets. The resulting uncertainties on $S_{Pb}(x)$ are small, which indicates the potential of the LHC data on coherent charmonium photoproduction in Pb-Pb UPCs to provide additional constraints on small-$x$ nPDFs. We explicitly demonstrate this using as an example the EPPS16 and nCTEQ16 nuclear parton distribution functions, whose uncertainties decrease severalfold after the Bayesian reweighting of the discussed UPC data.
