We have searched for Theta^+(1540) and Xi^{--}(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti and W targets at mid-rapidity and sqrt{s} = 41.6 GeV. In 2x10^8 inelastic events we find no evidence for narrow (sigma~5 MeV) signals in the Theta^+ -> pK_s and Xi^{--} -> Xi^-pi^- channels; our 95% CL upper limits (UL) for the inclusive production cross section times branching fraction Bx(dsigma/dy)|_{y~0} are 3.7 and 2.5 microb/N. The UL of the yield ratio of [Theta^+ / Lambda(1520)] < 2.7% is significantly lower than model predictions. Our UL of [BxXi^{--} / Xi(1530)^0] < 4% is at variance with the results that have provided first evidence for the Xi^{--} signal.
A search for Theta^+(1540) and Xi^{--}_{3/2}(1862) pentaquark candidates has been performed in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti and W targets at sqrt(s) = 41.6 GeV studying the pK_s resp. Xi^-pi^- and Xi^-pi^+ (and charge conjugated) decay channels at mid-rapidity. With sensitivities of (Br)x(dsigma/dx_F) < 5 to 25 microbarn/nucleon, we find no evidence for narrow pentaquark peaks in any of the studied final states. Preliminary values for the upper limit of relative yield ratios at mid-rapidity are (Theta^+(1540)) / (Lambda(1520)) < 0.02, (Br)x(Xi^{--}_{3/2}(1862)) / (Xi(1530)^0) < 0.077, and (Br)x(Xi_bar^{++}_{3/2}(1862)) / (Xi_bar(1530)^0) < 0.058 at 95% CL.
The inclusive production cross sections of the charmed mesons D^0, D^+, D_s^+ and D^{*+} have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons on C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and Feynmans x variable are given for the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to $pT=3.5$ GeV/$c$. The atomic mass number dependence and the leading to non-leading particle production asymmetries are presented as well.
Results on the production of the double-strange cascade hyperon $mathrm{Xi^-}$ are reported for collisions of p,(3.5~GeV),+,Nb, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research, Darmstadt. For the first time, subthreshold $mathrm{Xi^-}$ production is observed in proton-nucleus interactions. Assuming a $mathrm{Xi^-}$ phase-space distribution similar to that of $mathrm{Lambda}$ hyperons, the production probability amounts to $P_{mathrm{Xi^-}}=(2.0,pm0.4,mathrm{(stat)},pm 0.3,mathrm{(norm)},pm 0.6,mathrm{(syst)})times10^{-4}$ resulting in a $mathrm{Xi^-/(Lambda+Sigma^0)}$ ratio of $P_{mathrm{Xi^-}}/ P_{mathrm{Lambda+Sigma^0}}=(1.2pm 0.3,mathrm{(stat)}pm0.4,mathrm{(syst)})times10^{-2}$. Available model predictions are significantly lower than the estimated $mathrm{Xi^-}$ yield.
To understand the reliability of the charmonia suppression as a signature of the Quark-Gluon Plasma formation in nucleus-nucleus collisions it is important first to understand the details of the production of J/psi and psi in pA interactions and the difference in the suppression of these two states. This report presents the results of the study by the NA50 collaboration of the J/psi and psi production in pA interactions at 450 GeV beam energy and its dependence on rapidity. It is shown that the psi suffers more suppression than the J/psi, which is consistent with a similar observation made at 800 GeV beam energy by the E866/NuSea collaboration.
We study the rapidity dependence of the cross section on the rapidity of the central exclusive production cross sections of C-even mesons in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, where $A$ is a heavy ion. We observe qualitatively different behaviour of the contributions arising from $gamma$-Odderon and Pomeron-Pomeron fusion mechanisms. This can be used to extract the Odderon signal from the events of $f_2$ mesons exclusively produced in the forward region. Estimates, obtained using expected values of the Odderon cross section, indicate that the $gamma$-Odderon contribution may exceed by a few times the Pomeron-induced background in Pb-Pb collisions. Moreover, the Odderon effect can be clearly seen in terms of the asymmetry in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions with the beam and target reversed. It is particularly interesting to note that the asymmetry for $gamma$-Odderon fusion reaches its maximum value close to 1 in the forward direction, whereas the asymmetry for the Pomeron-Pomeron fusion contribution is small. The role of additional interactions of the $f_2$ meson with nucleons in the heavy ion, and also the contributions from secondary Reggeons, are estimated. The photon-Odderon contribution has a large normalisation uncertainty but the enhances cross-section in the forward region combined with a large asymmetry increases the chance of experimentally detecting the Odderon.
