We have measured out-of-plane resistivity $rho_c$ for La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ under anisotropic pressure. c-axis compression, which decreases $rho_c$, reduces $T_{rm c}$ drastically, whereas c-axis extention, which increases $rho_c$, enhances $T_{rm c}$ from 38K at ambient pressure to 51.6K at 8GPa. We find that the variation of $T_{rm c}$ scales as a function of $rho_c$, and that the c-axis pressure coefficient is much stronger than the ab-axis one. These imply that $T_{rm c}$ depends primarily on the interlayer, rather than the in-plane, lattice parameter.

The in-plane optical conductivity of seven La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) single crystals with x between 0 and 0.15 has been studied from 30 to 295 K. All doped samples exhibit strong peaks in the far-infrared, which closely resemble those observed in Cu-O ladders with one-dimensional charge-ordering. The behavior with doping and temperature of the peak energy, width, and intensity allows us to conclude that we are observing charge stripes dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) on the fast time scale of infrared spectroscopy.
We report a novel aspect of the competition and coexistence between magnetism and superconductivity in the high-$T_{c}$ cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (La214). With a modest magnetic field applied $H parallel c$-axis, we monitored the infrared signature of pair tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes and discovered the complete suppression of interlayer coupling in a series of underdoped La214 single crystals. We find that the in-plane superconducting properties remain intact, in spite of enhanced magnetism in the planes.
The superconducting properties of high-tc materials are functions of carriers concentration, which is controlled by the concentration of defects including heterovalent cations, interstitial oxygen ions, and oxygen vacancies. Here we combine low-temperature thermal treatment of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ epitaxial thin films and confocal Raman spectroscopy to control and investigate oxygen vacancies. We demonstrate that the apical site is the most favorable position to accommodate oxygen vacancies under low-temperature annealing conditions. Additionally we show that in high-quality films of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, oxygen vacancies strongly deform the oxygen environment around the copper ions. This observation is consistent with previous defect-chemical studies, and calls for further investigation of the defect induced properties in the overdoped regime of the hole-doped lanthanum cuprates.
In the underdoped pseudogap regime of cuprate superconductors, the normal state is commonly probed by applying a magnetic field ($H$). However, the nature of the $H$-induced resistive state has been the subject of a long-term debate, and clear evidence for a zero-temperature ($T=0$) $H$-tuned superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) has proved elusive. Here we report magnetoresistance measurements in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, providing striking evidence for quantum critical behavior of the resistivity -- the signature of a $H$-driven SIT. The transition is not direct: it is accompanied by the emergence of an intermediate state, which is a superconductor only at $T=0$. Our finding of a two-stage $H$-driven SIT goes beyond the conventional scenario in which a single quantum critical point separates the superconductor and the insulator in the presence of a perpendicular $H$. Similar two-stage $H$-driven SIT, in which both disorder and quantum phase fluctuations play an important role, may also be expected in other copper-oxide high-temperature superconductors.

Low energy spin excitations were investigated in the static stripe phase of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals. For x = 1/8 in which long-range static stripe order exists, an energy gap of E_g = 4 meV exists in the excitation spectrum in addition to strong quasi-elastic, incommensurate spin fluctuations associated with the static stripes. When x increases, the spectral weight of the spin fluctuations shifts from the quasi-elastic continuum to the excitation spectrum above E_g. The dynamic correlation length as a function of energy and the temperature evolution of the energy spectrum suggest a phase separation of two distinct magnetic phases in real space.
