We measured X-band electron-spin resonance of single crystalline sodium vanadate doped with lithium, Na_{1-x}Li_xV_2O_5 for 0 < x < 1.3% . The phase transition into a dimerized phase that is observed at 34 K in the undoped compound, was found to be strongly suppressed upon doping with lithium. The spin susceptibility was analyzed to determine the transition temperature and the energy gap with respect to the lithium content. The transition temperature Tsp is suppressed following a square dependence of the lithium concentration while the energy gap is found to decrease linearly. At high temperatures (T>Tsp) the susceptibility remains nearly independent of doping.

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states coexistence.
Measurements of polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption reveal that the electronic states determining the low-energy excitations of Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ have predominantly $a_{1g}$ symmetry with significant O $2p$ character. A large transfer of spectral weight observed in O $1s$ x-ray absorption provides spectral evidence for strong electron correlations in the layered cobaltates. Comparing Co $2p$ x-ray absorption with calculations based on a cluster model, we conclude that Na$_{x}$CoO$_2$ exhibits a charge-transfer electronic character rather than a Mott-Hubbard character.
We present a multi-frequency Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) study in the range of 4 GHz to 420 GHz of the quasi-one-dimensional, non-dimerized, quarter-filled Mott insulators, delta-(EDT-TTF-CONMe_2)_2X (X=AsF_6, Br). In the high temperature orthorhombic phase above T~190 K, the magnitude and the temperature dependence of the high temperature spin susceptibility are described by a S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with J_AsF6=298 K and J_Br=474 K coupling constants for X=AsF_6 and Br respectively. We estimate from the temperature dependence of the line width an exchange anisotropy, J/J of ~2 * 10^{-3}. The frequency dependence of the line width and the g-shift have an unusual quadratic dependence in all crystallographic orientations that we attribute to an antisymmetric exchange (Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya) interaction.
Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$, a strong-rung spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder compound, is probed by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the field-induced gapless phase above $H_{c1}$. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is analyzed in the quantum field theory framework, suggesting that the anisotropy of magnetic interactions plays a crucial role, determining the peculiar low-temperature ESR linewidth behavior. In particular, it is argued that the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (which is allowed on the bonds along the ladder legs) can be the source of this behavior in Cu(C$_8$H$_6$N$_2$)Cl$_2$.

The magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of underdoped $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$ (BNFA) single crystals with $0.19 leq xleq 0.34$ has been investigated with the complementary muon-spin-rotation ($mu$SR) and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The focus has been on the different antiferromagnetic states in the underdoped regime and their competition with superconductivity, especially for the ones with a tetragonal crystal structure and a so-called double-$Q$ magnetic order. Besides the collinear state with a spatially inhomogeneous spin-charge-density wave (i-SCDW) order at $x=0.24$ and $0.26$, that was previously identified in BNFA, we obtained evidence for an orthomagnetic state with a hedgehog-type spin vortex crystal (SVC) structure at $x=0.32$ and $0.34$. Whereas in the former i-SCDW state the infrared spectra show no sign of a superconducting response down to the lowest measured temperature of about 10K, in the SVC state there is a strong superconducting response similar to the one at optimum doping. The magnetic order is strongly suppressed here in the superconducting state and at $x=0.34$ there is even a partial re-entrance into a paramagnetic state at $T<<T_c$.
