Motional narrowing refers to the striking phenomenon where the resonance line of a system coupled to a reservoir becomes narrower when increasing the reservoir fluctuation. A textbook example is found in nuclear magnetic resonance, where the fluctuating local magnetic fields created by randomly oriented nuclear spins are averaged when the motion of the nuclei is thermally activated. The existence of a motional narrowing effect in the optical response of semiconductor quantum dots remains so far unexplored. This effect may be important in this instance since the decoherence dynamics is a central issue for the implementation of quantum information processing based on quantum dots. Here we report on the experimental evidence of motional narrowing in the optical spectrum of a semiconductor quantum dot broadened by the spectral diffusion phenomenon. Surprisingly, motional narrowing is achieved when decreasing incident power or temperature, in contrast with the standard phenomenology observed for nuclear magnetic resonance.

We present the experimental evidence of giant optical anisotropy in single InAs quantum dots. Polarization-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy reveals a linear polarization ratio with huge fluctuations, from one quantum dot to another, in sign and in magnitude with absolute values up to 82%. Systematic measurements on hundreds of quantum dots coming from two different laboratories demonstrate that the giant optical anisotropy is an intrinsic feature of dilute quantum-dot arrays.
We report polarized photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy of the negative trion in single charge tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dots. The spectrum exhibits a p-shell resonance with polarized fine structure arising from the direct excitation of the electron spin triplet states. The energy splitting arises from the axially symmetric electron-hole exchange interaction. The magnitude and sign of the polarization are understood from the spin character of the triplet states and a small amount of quantum dot asymmetry, which mixes the wavefunctions through asymmetric e-e and e-h exchange interactions.

Atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenide crystals (TMDCs) hold great promise for future semiconductor optoelectronics due to their unique electronic and optical properties. In particular, electron-hole pairs (excitons) in TMDCs are stable at room temperature and interact strongly with light. When TMDCs are embedded in an optical microcavity, the excitons can hybridise with cavity photons to form exciton polaritons (polaritons herein), which display both ultrafast velocities and strong interactions. The ability to manipulate and trap polaritons on a microchip is critical for future applications. Here, we create a potential landscape for room-temperature polaritons in monolayer WS$_2$, and demonstrate their free propagation and trapping. We show that the effect of dielectric disorder, which restricts the diffusion of WS$_2$ excitons and broadens their spectral resonance, is dramatically reduced in the strong exciton-photon coupling regime leading to motional narrowing. This enables the ballistic transport of WS$_2$ polaritons across tens of micrometers with an extended range of partial first-order coherence. Moreover, the dephasing of trapped polaritons is dramatically suppressed compared to both WS$_2$ excitons and free polaritons. Our results demonstrate the possibility of long-range transport and efficient trapping of TMDC polaritons in ambient conditions.
We demonstrate that the spin of a Cr atom in a quantum dot (QD) can be controlled optically and we discuss the main properties of this single spin system. The photoluminescence of individual Cr-doped QDs and their evolution in magnetic field reveal a large magnetic anisotropy of the Cr spin induced by local strain. This results in a splitting of the Cr spin states and in a thermalization on the lower energy states states S$_z$=0 and S$_z$=$pm$1. The magneto-optical properties of Cr-doped QDs can be modelled by an effective spin Hamiltonian including the spin to strain coupling and the influence of the QD symmetry. We also show that a single Cr spin can be prepared by resonant optical pumping. Monitoring the intensity of the resonant fluorescence of the QD during this process permits to probe the dynamics of the optical initialization of the spin. Hole-Cr flip-flops induced by an interplay of the hole-Cr exchange interaction and the coupling with acoustic phonons are the main source of relaxation that explains the efficient resonant optical pumping. The Cr spin relaxation time is measured in the $mu s$ range. We evidence that a Cr spin couples to non-equilibrium acoustic phonons generated during the optical excitation inside or near the QD). Finally we show that the energy of any spin state of an individual Cr atom can be independently tuned by a resonant single mode laser through the optical Stark effect. All these properties make Cr-doped QDs very promising for the development of hybrid spin-mechanical systems where a coherent mechanical driving of an individual spin in an oscillator is required.
We report transport measurements on a semiconductor quantum dot with a small number of confined electrons. In the Coulomb blockade regime, conduction is dominated by cotunneling processes. These can be either elastic or inelastic, depending on whether they leave the dot in its ground state or drive it into an excited state, respectively. We are able to discriminate between these two contributions and show that inelastic events can occur only if the applied bias exceeds the lowest excitation energy. Implications to energy-level spectroscopy are discussed.
