Elemental carbon represents a fundamental building block of matter and the possibility of ferromagnetic order in carbon attracted widespread attention. However, the origin of magnetic order in such a light element is only poorly understood and has puzzled researchers. We present a spectromicroscopy study at room temperature of proton irradiated metal free carbon using the elemental and chemical specificity of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We demonstrate that the magnetic order in the investigated system originates only from the carbon $pi$-electron system.

We have investigated the electronic structure of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn,N thin films using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonance-photoemission spectroscopy. From the Mn 2$p$$rightarrow3d$ XMCD results, it is shown that, while XMCD signals only due to paramagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions were observed in ZnO:Mn, nonmagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn$^{2+}$ ions coexist in ZnO:Mn,N. XMCD signals of ZnO:Mn,N revealed that the localized Mn$^{2+}$ ground state and Mn$^{2+}$ state hybridized with ligand hole coexisted, implying $p$-$d$ exchange coupling. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was suppressed, suggesting that interaction between magnetic moments in ZnO:Mn,N has localized nature.
We have studied magnetism in anatase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_{2-delta}$ ({it x} = 0.05) thin films with various electron carrier densities, by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. For electrically conducting samples, the magnetic moment estimated by XMCD was $<$ 0.3 $mu_B$/Co using the surface-sensitive total electron yield (TEY) mode, while it was 0.3-2.4 $mu_B$/Co using the bulk-sensitive total fluorescence yield (TFY) mode. The latter value is in the same range as the saturation magnetization 0.6-2.1 $mu_B$/Co deduced by SQUID measurement. The magnetization and the XMCD intensity increased with carrier density, consistent with the carrier-induced origin of the ferromagnetism.

We found that the conventional model of orbital ordering of 3x^2-r^2/3y^2-r^2 type in the eg states of La_0.5Sr_1.5MnO_4 is incompatible with measurements of linear dichroism in the Mn 2p-edge x-ray absorption, whereas these eg states exhibit predominantly cross-type orbital ordering of x^2-z^2/y^2-z^2. LDA+U band-structure calculations reveal that such a cross-type orbital ordering results from a combined effect of antiferromagnetic structure, Jahn-Teller distortion, and on-site Coulomb interactions.
Noncollinear chiral spin textures in ferromagnetic multilayers are at the forefront of recent research in nano-magnetism with the promise for fast and energy-efficient devices. The recently demonstrated possibilities to stabilize such chiral structures in synthetic antiferromagnets (SAF) has raised interests as they are immune to dipolar field, hence favoring the stabilization of ultra small textures, improve mobility and avoid the transverse deflections of moving skyrmions limiting the efficiency in some foreseen applications. However, such systems with zero net magnetization are hence difficult to characterize by most of the standard techniques. Here, we report that the relevant parameters of a magnetic SAF texture, those being its period, its type (Neel or Bloch) and its chirality (clockwise or counterclockwise), can be directly determined using the circular dichroism in x-ray resonant scattering (CD-XRMS) at half integer multilayer Bragg peaks in reciprocal space. The analysis of the dependence in temperature down to 40K allows us moreover to address the question of the temperature stability of a spin spiral in a SAF sample and of the temperature scaling of the symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions.
We demonstrate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a 5d transition metal using circularly-polarized x-ray free electron laser in the hard x-ray region. A decay time of light-induced demagnetization of L1${}_0$-FePt was determined to be $tau_textrm{Pt} = 0.6 textrm{ps}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L${}_3$ edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicated the decay time for total magnetization as $tau_textrm{total} = 0.1 textrm{ps}$. A transient magnetic state with the photo-modulated magnetic coupling between the 3d and 5d elements is firstly demonstrated.
