We present electronic structure calculations in combination with local and non-local many-body correlation effects for the half-metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$. Finite-temperature Dynamical Mean Field Theory results show the existence of non-quasiparticle states, which were recently observed as almost currentless minority spin states near the Fermi energy in resonant scattering experients. At zero temperatures, Variational Cluster Approach calculations support the half-metallic nature of CrO$_2$ as seen in superconducting point contact spectroscopy. The combination of these two techniques allowed us to qualitatively describe the spin-polarization in CrO$_2$.

Using high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observed a thermal spin depolarization to which all spin-polarized electrons contribute. Furthermore we observed a distinct minority spin state near the Fermi level and a corresponding depolarization that seldom contributes to demagnetization. The origin of this depolarization has been identified as the many-body effect characteristics of half-metallic ferromagnets. Our investigation opens an experimental field of itinerant ferromagnetic physics focusing on phenomena with sub-meV energy scale.

By means of hybrid density functional theory we investigate the evolution of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) parent compound LaMnO$_3$ under pressure. We predict a transition from a low pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator to a high pressure ferromagnetic (FM) transport half-metal (tHM), characterized by a large spin polarization (~ 80-90 %). The FM-tHM transition is associated with a progressive quenching of the cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions which transform the $Pnma$ orthorhombic phase into a perfect cubic one (through a mixed phase in which JT-distorted and regular MnO6 octahedra coexist), and with a high-spin (S=2, m_Mn=3.7 mu_B) to low-spin (S=1, m_Mn=1.7 mu_B) magnetic moment collapse. These results interpret the progression of the experimentally observed non-Mott metalization process and open up the possibility of realizing CMR behaviors in a stoichiometric manganite.
The origin of successive phase transitions observed in the layered perovskite $alpha$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ is studied by the density-functional-theory-based electronic structure calculation and mean-field analysis of the proposed low-energy effective model. We find that, despite the fact that the CrO$_6$ octahedron is elongated along the $c$-axis of the crystal structure, the crystal-field level of nondegenerate $3d_{xy}$ orbitals of the Cr ion is lower in energy than that of doubly degenerate $3d_{yz}$ and $3d_{xz}$ orbitals, giving rise to the orbital degrees of freedom in the system with a $3d^2$ electron configuration. We show that the higher (lower) temperature phase transition is caused by the ordering of the orbital (spin) degrees of freedom.
We have investigated the electronic states and spin polarization of half-metallic ferromagnet CrO$_2$ (100) epitaxial films by bulk-sensitive spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with a focus on non-quasiparticle (NQP) states derived from electron-magnon interactions. We found that the averaged values of the spin polarization are approximately 100% and 40% at 40 K and 300 K, respectively. This is consistent with the previously reported result [H. Fujiwara et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 106, 202404 (2015).]. At 100 K, peculiar spin depolarization was observed at the Fermi level ($E_{F}$), which is supported by theoretical calculations predicting NQP states. This suggests the possible appearance of NQP states in CrO$_2$. We also compare the temperature dependence of our spin polarizations with that of the magnetization.
The magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of Ba3Cu3In4O12 (In-334) and Ba3Cu3Sc4O12 (Sc-334) are reported. Both 334 phases have a structure derived from perovskite, with CuO4 squares interconnected to form half-twist ladders along the c-axis. The Cu-O-Cu angles, ~ 90o, and the positive Weiss temperatures indicate the presence of significant ferromagnetic (FM) interactions along the Cu ladders. At low temperatures, T < 20 K, sharp transitions in the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at TN. TN is suppressed on application of a field and a complex magnetic phase diagram with three distinct magnetic regimes below the upper critical field can be inferred from our measurements. The magnetic interactions are discussed in relation to a modified spin-1/2 FM-AFM model and the 334 half-twist ladder is compared to other 2-rung ladder spin-1/2 systems.
