We have investigated the effect of pressure on the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties on a single crystal of conducting, ferromagnet (T$_{C}$=157K) La$_{0.82}$Sr$_{0.18}$CoO$_{3}$ located near the boundary of the metal-insulator transition. Contrary to the results reported on related systems, we find a transition from the conducting state to an insulating state and a decrease of T$_{C}$ with increasing pressure while the lattice structure remains unchanged. We show that this unusual behavior is driven by a gradual change of the spin state of Co$^{3+}$ ions from magnetic intermediate-spin (t$_{2g}^5$e$_{g}^{1}$; S=1) to a nonmagnetic low-spin (t$_{2g}^6$e$_{g}^{0}$; S=0) state.

Polarized neutron inelastic scattering has been used to measure spin excitations in ferromagnetic La$_{0.82}$Sr$_{0.18}$CoO$_{3}$. The magnon spectrum of these spin excitations is well defined at low energies but becomes heavily damped at higher energies, and can be modeled using a quadratic dispersion. We determined a spin wave stiffness constant of $D=94pm 3$,meV,AA$^{2}$. Assuming a nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model we find reasonable agreement between the exchange determined from D and the bulk Curie temperature. Several possible mechanisms to account for the observed spin-wave damping are discussed.
Electrical control of magnetism is a long-standing goal in physics and technology, recently developed electrolyte gating techniques providing a promising route to realization. Validating a recent theoretical prediction, here we demonstrate large enhancement of electrostatic modulation of ferromagnetic order in ion-gel-gated ultrathin La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_{3-delta}$ by thickness-tuning to the brink of a magnetic percolation transition. Application of only 3-4 V then drives a transition from a short-range-ordered insulator to a robust long-range ferromagnetic metal, realizing giant electrostatic Curie temperature modulation over a 150 K window. In operando polarized neutron reflectometry confirms gate-controlled ferromagnetism, also demonstrating unusually deep penetration of induced magnetization, in further agreement with theory.
BaIrO3 is a novel insulator with coexistent weak ferromagnetism, charge and spin density wave. Dilute RE doping for Ba induces a metallic state, whereas application of modest pressure readily restores an insulating state characterized by a three-order-of-magnitude increase of resistivity. Since pressure generally increases orbital overlap and broadens energy bands, a pressure-induced insulating state is not commonplace. The profoundly dissimilar responses of the ground state to light doping and low hydrostatic pressures signal an unusual, delicate interplay between structural and electronic degrees of freedom in BaIrO3.
We report thermal-expansion, lattice-constant, and specific-heat data of the series La_1-xA_xCoO_3 for 0<= x <= 0.30 with A = Ca, Sr, and Ba. For the undoped compound LaCoO_3 the thermal-expansion coefficient alpha(T) exhibits a pronounced maximum around T=50K caused by a temperature-driven spin-state transition from a low-spin state of the Co^{3+$ ions at low towards a higher spin state at higher temperatures. The partial substitution of the La^{3+} ions by divalent Ca^{2+}, Sr^{2+}, or Ba^{2+} ions causes drastic changes in the macroscopic properties of LaCoO3. The large maximum in alpha(T) is suppressed and completely vanishes for x> 0.12. For A = Ca three different anomalies develop in alpha(T) with further increasing x, which are visible in specific-heat data as well. Together with temperature-dependent x-ray data we identify several phase transitions as a function of the doping concentration x and temperature. From these data we propose an extended phase diagram for La_1-xCa_xCoO_3.
The pressure dependence of the Curie temperature T$_{C}(P)$ in La$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_{3}$ was determined by neutron diffraction up to 8 GPa, and compared with the metallization temperature T$_{IM}(P)$ cite{irprl}. The behavior of the two temperatures appears similar over the whole pressure range suggesting a key role of magnetic double exchange also in the pressure regime where the superexchange interaction is dominant. Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic peaks at high pressure and low temperature indicates a phase separated regime which is well reproduced with a dynamical mean-field calculation for a simplified model. A new P-T phase diagram has been proposed on the basis of the whole set of experimental data.
