The cyclotron spin-flip modes of spin unpolarized integer quantum Hall states ($ u =2,4$) have been studied with inelastic light scattering. The energy of these modes is significantly smaller compared to the bare cyclotron gap. Second order exchange corrections are held responsible for a negative energy contribution and render these modes the lowest energy excitations of unpolarized integer quantum Hall states.
An antiphased magnetoplasma (MP) mode in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) has been studied by means of inelastic light scattering (ILS) spectroscopy. Unlike the cophased MP mode it is purely quantum excitation which has no classic plasma analogue. It is found that zero momentum degeneracy for the antiphased and cophased modes predicted by the first-order perturbation approach in terms of the {it e-e} interaction is lifted. The zero momentum energy gap is determined by a negative correlation shift of the antiphased mode. This shift, observed experimentally and calculated theoretically within the second-order perturbation approach, is proportional to the effective Rydberg constant in a semiconductor material.
We report on the calculation of the cyclotron spin-flip excitation (CSFE) in a spin-polarized quantum Hall system at unit filling. This mode has a double-exciton component which contributes to the CSFE correlation energy but can not be found by means of a mean field approach. The result is compared with available experimental data.
In this review the physics of Pfaffian paired states, in the context of fractional quantum Hall effect, is discussed using field-theoretical approaches. The Pfaffian states are prime examples of topological ($p$-wave) Cooper pairing and are characterized by non-Abelian statistics of their quasiparticles. Here we focus on conditions for their realization and competition among them at half-integer filling factors. Using the Dirac composite fermion description, in the presence of a mass term, we study the influence of Landau level mixing in selecting a particular Pfaffian state. While Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian are selected when Landau level mixing is not strong, and can be taken into account perturbatively, the PH Pfaffian state requires non-perturbative inclusion of at least two Landau levels. Our findings, for small Landau level mixing, are in accordance with numerical investigations in the literature, and call for a non-perturbative approach in the search for PH Pfaffian correlations. We demonstrated that a method based on the Chern-Simons field-theoretical approach can be used to generate characteristic interaction pseudo-potentials for Pfaffian paired states.
Electron pairing is a rare phenomenon appearing only in a few unique physical systems; e.g., superconductors and Kondo-correlated quantum dots. Here, we report on an unexpected, but robust, electron pairing in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime. The pairing takes place within an interfering edge channel circulating in an electronic Fabry-Perot interferometer at a wide range of bulk filling factors, $2<{ u} _B<5$. The main observations are: (a) High visibility Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations with magnetic flux periodicity ${Delta}{phi}={varphi}_0/2=h/2e$ (instead of the ubiquitous $h/e$), with $e$ the electron charge and $h$ the Planck constant; (b) An interfering quasiparticle charge $e ^* {sim} 2e$ - revealed by quantum shot noise measurements; and (c) Full dephasing of the $h/2e$ periodicity by induced dephasing of the adjacent edge channel (while keeping the interfering edge channel intact) : a clear realization of inter-channel entanglement. While this pairing phenomenon clearly results from inter-channel interaction, the exact mechanism that leads to e-e attraction within a single edge channel is not clear.
Significant insights into non-Abelian quantum Hall states were obtained from studying special multi-particle interaction Hamiltonians, whose unique ground states are the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states for the case of spinless electrons. We generalize this approach to include the electronic spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We demonstrate that in the absence of Zeeman splitting the ground states of such Hamiltonians have large degeneracies and very rich spin structures. The spin structure of the ground states and low-energy excitations can be understood based on an emergent SU(3) symmetry for the case corresponding to the Moore-Read state. These states with different spin quantum numbers represent non-Abelian quantum Hall states with different magnetizations, whose quasi-hole properties are likely to be similar to those of their spin polarized counterparts.
