Giant enhancement of the nonlinear response of a single crystal Nb sample, placed in {it a pumping ac magnetic field}, has been observed experimentally. The experimentally observed amplitude of the output signal is about three orders of magnitude higher than that seen without parametric pumping. The theoretical analysis based on the extended double well potential model provides a qualitative explanation of the experimental results as well as new predictions of two bifurcations for specific values of the pumping signal.

In this work, we find that Al cladding on Nb microstrip resonators is an efficient way to suppress nonlinear responses induced by local Joule heating, resulting in improved microwave power handling capability. This improvement is likely due to the proximity effect between the Al and the Nb layers. The proximity effect is found to be controllable by tuning the thickness of the Al layer. We show that improving the film quality is also helpful as it enhances the microwave critical current density, but it cannot eliminate the local heating.
We report results of experimental studies of ac susceptibility of Nb single crystal at low frequencies in swept magnetic fields applied parallel to the surface. Analysis of the experimental data shows that the swept magnetic field significantly changes the vortex conductivity in the bulk. It becomes dissipative with unexpected large frequency dispersion. At the surface, one observes a layer with enhanced conductivity in comparison to the bulk. This layer provides a considerably large contribution to the shielding and absorption of an ac field even in dc fields below $H_{c2}$. We have also demonstrated that the swept magnetic field apparently affects an ac response of the surface superconducting states.
We report the parametric amplification of a microwave signal in a Kerr medium formed from superconducting qubits. Two mutually coupled flux qubits, embedded in the current antinode of a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator, are used as a nonlinear element. Shared Josephson junctions provide the qubit-resonator coupling, resulting in a device with a measured gain of about 20 dB. We argue, that this arrangement represents a unit cell which can be straightforwardly extended to a quasi one-dimensional quantum metamaterial with a large tunable Kerr nonlinearity.
A hexagonal oxynitride (Li0.88_0.12)Nb3.0(O0.13N0.87)4 was synthesized through ammonia nitridation of LiNb3O8. The structural analysis revealed that this oxynitride consists of alternate stacking of octahedral and prismatic layers with different Li/Nb ratios: significant amounts of Li and Nb atoms (Li/Nb = 43/57) coexist in the octahedral layer, while the prismatic site is preferentially occupied by Nb (Li/Nb = 3/97). A metallic behavior was accompanied by an abrupt drop of electrical resistivity at about 3 K. Furthermore, large diamagnetism and specific-heat anomaly were observed below this temperature, suggesting the appearance of superconductivity in the Li-Nb oxynitride.

The microwave response of high quality niobium films in a perpendicular static magnetic field has been investigated. The complex frequency shift was measured up to the upper critical fields. The data have been analyzed by the effective conductivity model for the type-II superconductors in the mixed state. This model is found to yield consistent results for the coherence lengths in high-kappa superconducting samples, and can be used with HTSC even at temperatures much below T_c. It is shown that for samples with high values of depinning frequency, one should measure both components of the complex frequency shift in order to determine the flow resistivity. The thick Nb film (160 nm) has low resistivity at 10 K, comparable to the best single crystals, and low kappa value. In contrast, the thinnest (10 nm) film has kappa ~ 9.5 and exhibits a high depinning frequency (~20 GHz). The upper critical field determined from microwave measurements is related to the radius of nonoverlaping vortices, and appears to be larger than the one determined by the transition to the normal state.
