We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the shadow Fermi surface in one layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+delta and two layer (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find the shadow band to have the same peakwidth and dispersion as the main band. In addition, the shadow band/main band intensity ratio is found to be binding energy independent. Consequently, it is concluded that the shadow bands in Bi-based HTSC do not originate from antiferromagnetic interactions but have a structural origin.

We investigate the cross-over temperature T* as a function of doping in (Ca_{x}La_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_3O_{y}, where the maximum Tc (Tc^max) varies continuously by 30% between families (x) with minimal structural changes. T* is determined by DC-susceptibility measurements. We find that T* scales with the maximum Neel temperature TN^max of each family. This result strongly supports a magnetic origin of T*, and indicates that three dimensional interactions play a role in its magnitude.

The one-particle spectral function of a state formed by superconducting (SC) clusters is studied via Monte Carlo techniques. The clusters have similar SC amplitudes but randomly distributed phases. This state is stabilized by the competition with anti-ferromagnetism, after quenched disorder is introduced. Fermi arcs between the critical temperature Tc and the cluster formation temperature scale T* are observed, similarly as in the pseudo-gap state of the cuprates. The arcs originate at metallic regions in between the neighboring clusters that present large SC phase differences.

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and magnetoresistance in the filled-skutterudite superconductor LaRu4P12, which is a reference material of PrRu4P12 that exhibits a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at T_MI~60 K. The observed dHvA branches for the main Fermi surface (FS) are well explained by the band-structure calculation, using the full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method with the local-density approximation, suggesting a nesting instability with q =(1,0,0) in the main multiply connected FS as expected also in PrRu4P12. Observed cyclotron effective masses of (2.6-11.8)m_0, which are roughly twice the calculated masses, indicate the large mass enhancement even in the La-skutterudites. Comparing the FS between LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12, an essential role of c-f hybridization cooperating with the FS nesting in driving the the M-I transition in PrRu4P12 has been clarified.

Various angle-dependent measurements in hole-doped cuprates suggested that Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) and Fermi-liquid (FL) self-energies coexist in the Brillouin zone. Moreover, it is also found that NFL self-energies survive up to the overdoped region where the resistivity features a global FL-behavior. To address this problem, here we compute the momentum dependent self-energy from a single band Hubbard model. The self-energy is calculated self-consistently by using a momentum-dependent density-fluctuation (MRDF) method. One of our main result is that the computed self-energy exhibits a NFL-like frequency dependence only in the antinodal region, and FL-like behavior elsewhere, and retains its analytic form at all momenta and dopings. The dominant source of NFL self-energy in the antinodal region stems from the self-energy-dressed fluctuations between the itinerant and localized densities as self-consistency is invoked. We also calculate the DC conductivity by including the full momentum dependent self-energy. We find that the resistivity-temperature exponent n becomes 1 near the optimal doping, while the NFL self-energy occupies largest momentum-space volume. Surprisingly, even in the NFL state near the optimal doping, the nodal region contains FL-like self-energies; while in the under- and over-dopings (n ~ 2), the antinodal region remains NFL-like. These results highlight the non-local correlation physics in cuprates and in other similar intermediately correlated materials, where a direct link between the microscopic single-particle spectral properties and the macroscopic transport behavior can not be well established.

Three Fermion sumrules for interacting systems are derived at T=0, involving the number expectation $bar{N}(mu)$, canonical chemical potentials $mu(m)$, a logarithmic time derivative of the Greens function $gamma_{vec{k} sigma}$ and the static Greens function. In essence we establish at zero temperature the sumrules linking: $$ bar{N}(mu) leftrightarrow sum_{m} Theta(mu- mu(m)) leftrightarrow sum_{vec{k},sigma} Thetaleft(gamma_{vec{k} sigma}right) leftrightarrow sum_{vec{k},sigma} Thetaleft(G_sigma(vec{k},0)right). $$ Connecting them across leads to the Luttinger and Ward sumrule, originally proved perturbatively for Fermi liquids. Our sumrules are nonperturbative in character and valid in a considerably broader setting that additionally includes non-canonical Fermions and Tomonaga-Luttinger models. Generalizations are given for singlet-paired superconductors, where one of the sumrules requires a testable assumption of particle-hole symmetry at all couplings. The sumrules are found by requiring a continuous evolution from the Fermi gas, and by assuming a monotonic increase of $mu(m)$ with particle number m. At finite T a pseudo-Fermi surface, accessible to angle resolved photoemission, is defined using the zero crossings of the first frequency moment of a weighted spectral function.
