We combine infrared reflectivity and EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) techniques to study the solid solution La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 prepared by different methods yielding samples with different insulator-metal transition temperatures (TIM). While the small polaron analysis of the optical conductivity provides a natural description for the higher frequency reflectivity tail of conducting samples, our structural results are in accord with two non-equivalent sites in the insulating phase of good-quality samples. Those sites, one for the Mn3+ Jahn-Teller distorted octahedra and another for the Mn4+ ion, gradually turn into one dynamically averaged below the transition TIM. On the other hand, carriers screening antiresonances near infrared longitudinal optical modes, above TIM, mirror thermal activated small polarons weakly smearing EXAFS oscillations. We associate this to the lack of M3+,M4+ explicit structure in the Mn K-edge absorption band. Extra octahedra, detected by EXAFS below TIM in higher resistivity samples, seem to be excluded of participating in the dynamics of the insulator-metal transition shifting TIM toward lower temperatures.

By means of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy under hydrostatic pressure, we investigate the stability of the quadruple perovskite LaMn7O12. At 34 GPa, the data unveil a first-order structural phase transition from the monoclinic I2/m symmetry stable at ambient conditions to cubic Im-3 symmetry. Considering that the same structural transition occurs at 653 K upon heating at ambient pressure, we propose a rare scenario of reentrant-type phase transition. In the high-pressure Im-3 phase, the Jahn-Teller distortion of the MnO6 octahedra and the orbital order present in the I2/m phase are suppressed, which is promising to investigate the possibility of pressure-induced Mott insulator-metal transition in the ideal situation of no structural distortions. The observation of a progressive line broadening of almost all Raman modes with pressure suggests that this transition may be incipient above 20 GPa.
Absorption spectra fine structure of $KDy(MoO_4)_2$ in the region of cooperative Jahn-Teller type ordering was studied. Temperature anomalies in the spectra occurring at phase transformation correlate with the ultrasound peculiarities observed earlier. Based on the symmetry approaching, possible activity of the irreducible representations of the rhombic $D_{2h}$ point group was discussed, which lead to the incommensurate phase at cooperative ordering. It was supposed, that coupled $A_u$-type phonon mode may lead to the incommensurate phase existence, which is possible at least in the temperature region 17-12 K.
Motivated by the recent synthesis of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+delta}$ (BCO), a high temperature superconducting cuprate with putative $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ ground state symmetry, we investigated its electronic structure by means of Cu $L_3$ x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge on a polycrystalline sample. We show that the XAS profile of BCO is characterised by two peaks associated to inequivalent Cu sites, and that its RIXS response features a single, sharp peak associated to crystal-field excitations. We argue that these observations are only partially compatible with the previously proposed crystal structure of BCO. Based on our spectroscopic results and on previously published powder diffraction measurements, we propose a crystalline structure characterized by two inequivalent Cu sites located at alternated planes along the $c$ axis: nominally trivalent Cu(1) belonging to very short Cu-O chains, and divalent Cu(2) in the oxygen deficient CuO$_ {1.5}$ planes. We also analyze the low-energy region of the RIXS spectra to estimate the magnitude of the magnetic interactions in BCO and find that in-plane nearest neighbor superexchange exceeds 120~meV, similarly to that of other layered cuprates. Although these results do not support the pure $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ ground state scenario, they hint at a significant departure from the common quasi-2D electronic structure of superconducting cuprates of pure $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry.

The origin of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion and orbital-order in LaMnO3 is central to the physics of the manganites. The question is complicated by the simultaneous presence of tetragonal and GdFeO3-type distortions and the strong Hunds rule coupling between e_g and t_2g electrons. To clarify the situation we calculate the transition temperature for the Kugel-Khomskii superexchange mechanism by using the local density approximation+dynamical mean-field method, and disentangle the effects of super-exchange from those of lattice distortions. We find that super-exchange alone would yield T_KK=650 K. The tetragonal and GdFeO3-type distortions, however, reduce T_KK to 550 K. Thus electron-phonon coupling is essential to explain the persistence of local Jahn-Teller distortions to at least 1150 K and to reproduce the occupied orbital deduced from neutron scattering.
We present an x-ray absorption study of the oxidation states of transition-metal-ions of LiMnO2 and its related materials, widely used as cathodes in Li-ion batteries. The comparison between the obtained spectrum and the configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations showed that the Mn3+ in LiMnO2 is a mixture of the high-spin and low-spin states. We found that Li deficiencies occur in the case of Cr substitution, whereas there are no Li deficiencies in the case of Ni substitution. We conclude that the substitution of charge-transfer-type Ni or Cu is effective for LiMnO2 battery materials.
