We have investigated electronic structures of La$_3$S$_4$ and Ce$_3$S$_4$ using the LSDA and LSDA+$U$ methods. Calculated density of states (DOS) are compared with the experimental DOS obtained by the valence band photoemission spectroscopy. The DOS at $E_{rm{F}}$ indicates the 5$d$ character in La$_3$S$_4$ and 4$f$ character in Ce$_3$S$_4$. It is found to be nearly half metallic in the ferromagnetic ground state of Ce$_3$S$_4$. %Ce$_3$S$_4$ has ferromagnetic ground states with spin and orbital magnetic %moments of 1.27 $mu_{rm{B}}$ and $-$2.81 $mu_{rm{B}}$ per Ce, respectively, %and shows nearly half metallic ground state. We discuss the superconductivity and structural transition in La$_3$S$_4$, and the absence of structural transition in Ce$_3$S$_4$.

We study the electronic and structural properties of substitutional impurities of graphenelike nanoporous materials C$_2$N, $tg$-, and $hg$-C$_3$N$_4$ by means of density functional theory calculations. We consider four types of impurities; boron substitution on carbon sites (B(C)), carbon substitution on nitrogen sites (C(N)), nitrogen substitution on carbon sites (N(C)), and sulfur substitution on nitrogen sites (S(N)). From cohesive energy calculations, we find that the C(N) and B(C) substitutions are the most energetically favorable and induce small bond modifications in the vicinity of the impurity, while the S(N) induces strong lattice distortions. Though all of the studied impurities induce defect levels inside the band gap of these materials, their electronic properties are poles apart depending on the behavior of the impurity as an acceptor or a donor. It is also observed that acceptor (donor) wavefunctions are composed only of $sigma$ ($pi$) orbitals from the impurity itself and/or neighboring sites. Consequently, acceptor wavefunctions are directed towards the pores and donor wavefunctions are more extended throughout the neighboring atoms, a property that could further be explored to modify the interaction between these materials and adsorbates. Moreover, impurity properties display a strong site sensitivity and ground state binding energies ranging from $0.03$ to $1.13$ eV, thus offering an interesting route for tuning the optical properties of these materials. Finally, spin-polarized calculations reveal that all impurity configurations have a magnetic ground state that rises from the spin splitting of the impurity levels. In a few configurations, more than one impurity level can be found inside the gap and two of them could potentially be explored as two-level systems for single-photon emission, following similar proposals recently made on defect complexes on TMDCs.
Low-energy magnetic excitations of the easy-axis antiferromagnet TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ are investigated by far-infrared absorption and reflection spectroscopy in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. The observed field dependence of the resonance frequencies and the magnetization are reproduced by a mean-field spin model for magnetic fields applied both along and perpendicular to the easy axis. Based on this model we determined the full set of magnetic interactions, including Fe-Fe and Fe-Tb exchange interactions, single-ion anisotropy for Tb ions and $g$-factors, which describe the ground-state spin texture and the low-energy spin excitations of TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. Compared to earlier studies we allow a small canting of the nearly Ising-like Tb moments to achieve a quantitative agreement with the magnetic susceptibility measurements. The additional high energy magnetic resonance lines observed, besides the two resonances expected for a two-sublattice antiferromagnet, suggest a more complex six-sublattice magnetic ground state for TbFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$.

We report on optical spectroscopy on the lacunar spinels GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GeV$_4$S$_8$ in the spectral range from 100 to 23000 cm$^{-1}$ and for temperatures from 5 to 300 K. These multiferroic spinel systems reveal Jahn-Teller driven ferroelectricity and complex magnetic order at low temperatures. We study the infrared-active phonon modes and the low-lying electronic excitations in the cubic high-temperature phase, as well as in the orbitally and in the magnetically ordered low-temperature phases. We compare the phonon modes in these two compounds, which undergo different symmetry-lowering Jahn-Teller transitions into ferroelectric and orbitally ordered phases, and exhibit different magnetic ground states. We follow the splitting of the phonon modes at the structural phase transition and detect additional splittings at the onset of antiferromagnetic order in GeV$_4$S$_8$. We observe electronic transitions within the $d$-derived bands of the V$_4$ clusters and document a significant influence of the structural and magnetic phase transitions on the narrow electronic band gaps.
We report the results of high pressure x-ray diffraction, x-ray absorption, and electrical transport measurements of Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$ up to 42 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the study of any Ce-based KI. We observe a smooth decrease in volume and movement toward intermediate Ce valence with pressure, both of which point to increased electron correlations. Despite this, temperature-dependent resistance data show the suppression of the interaction-driven ambient pressure insulating ground state. We also discuss potential ramifications of these results for the predicted topological KI state.
We report the importance of anisotropic Coulomb interactions in DFT+U calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn$_3$O$_4$. The effects of anisotropic interactions in Mn$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{3+}$ are separately examined by defining two different sets of Hubbard parameters: $U^{2+}$ and $J^{2+}$ for Mn$^{2+}$ and $U^{3+}$ and $J^{3+}$ for Mn$^{3+}$. The anisotropic interactions in Mn$^{3+}$ have a significant impact on the physical properties of Mn$_3$O$_4$ including local magnetic moments, canted angle, spontaneous magnetic moment, and superexchange coupling, but those in Mn$^{2+}$ do not make any noticeable difference. Weak ferromagnetic interchain superexchange, observed in experiments, is predicted only if a sizable anisotropic interaction is considered in Mn$^{3+}$. By analyzing the eigenoccupations of the on-site Mn density matrix, we found that the spin channel involving Mn$^{3+}$ $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals, which governs the 90$^circ$ correlation superexchange, is directly controlled by the anisotropic interactions. These findings demostrate that the exchange correction $J$ for the intraorbital Coulomb potential is of critical importance for first-principles description of reduced Mn oxides containing Mn$^{3+}$ or Mn$^{4+}$.
