We investiaged the optical properties of four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which shows a fermi-liquid-like behavior at low temperature. Its optical conductivity spectra clearly displayed the formation of a pseudogap and the development of a coherent peak with decreasing temperature. Temperature-dependences of the density $n$ and the scattering rate $1/tau$ of the coherent component were also derived. As the temperature decreases, both $n$ and $1/tau$ decrease for four-layer BaRuO$_{3}$. These electrodynamic responses were compared with those of nine-layer BaRuO$_{3}$, which also shows a pseudogap formation but has an insulator-like state at low temperature. It was found that the relative rates of change of both $n$ and $1/tau$ determine either metallic or insulator-like responses in the ruthenates. The optical properties of the four-layer ruthenate were also compared with those of other pseudogap systems, such as high $T_{c}$ cuprates and heavy electron systems.

We investigated the temperature-dependence of the Raman spectra of a nine-layer BaRuO$_3$ single crystal and a four-layer BaRuO$_3$ epitaxial film, which show pseudogap formations in their metallic states. From the polarized and depolarized spectra, the observed phonon modes are assigned properly according to the predictions of group theory analysis. In both compounds, with decreasing temperature, while $A_{1g}$ modes show a strong hardening, $E_g$ (or $E_{2g}$) modes experience a softening or no significant shift. Their different temperature-dependent behaviors could be related to a direct Ru metal-bonding through the face-sharing of RuO$_6$. It is also observed that another $E_{2g}$ mode of the oxygen participating in the face-sharing becomes split at low temperatures in the four layer BaRuO$_3 $. And, the temperature-dependence of the Raman continua between 250 $sim $ 600 cm$^{-1}$ is strongly correlated to the square of the plasma frequency. Our observations imply that there should be a structural instability in the face-shared structure, which could be closely related to the pseudogap formation of BaRuO$_3$ systems.

Weyl fermions play a major role in quantum field theory but have been quite elusive as fundamental particles. Materials based on quasi two-dimensional bismuth layers were recently designed and provide an arena for the study of the interplay between anisotropic Dirac fermions, magnetism and structural changes, allowing the formation of Weyl fermions in condensed matter. Here, we perform an optical investigation of YbMnBi$_2$, a representative type II Weyl semimetal, and contrast its excitation spectrum with the optical response of the more conventional semimetal EuMnBi$_2$. Our comparative study allows us disentangling the optical fingerprints of type II Weyl fermions, but also challenge the present theoretical understanding of their electrodynamic response.
Hexagonal perovskites are an attractive group of materials due to their various polymorph phases and rich structure-property relationships. BaRuO3 (BRO) is a prototypical hexagonal perovskite, in which the electromagnetic properties are significantly modified depending on its atomic structure. Whereas thin-film epitaxy would vastly expand the application of hexagonal perovskites by epitaxially stabilizing various metastable polymorphs, the atomic structure of epitaxial hexagonal perovskites, especially at the initial growth stage, has rarely been investigated. In this study, we show that an intriguing nucleation behavior takes place during the initial stabilization of a hexagonal perovskite 9R BaRuO3 (BRO) thin film on a (111) SrTiO3 (STO) substrate. We use high-resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with geometrical phase analysis to understand the local strain relaxation behavior. We find that nano-scale strained layers, composed of different RuO6 octahedral stacking, are initially formed at the interface, followed by a relaxed single crystal9R BRO thin film. Within the interface layer, hexagonal BROs are nucleated on the STO (111) substrate by both corner- and face-sharing. More interestingly, we find that the boundaries between the differently-stacked nucleation layers, i.e. heterostructural boundaries facilitates strain relaxation, in addition to the formation of conventional misfit dislocations evolving from homostructural boundaries. Our observations reveal an important underlying mechanism to understand the thin-film epitaxy and strain accommodation in hexagonal perovskites.
We report on the anisotropic response, the charge and lattice dynamics of normal and charge-ordered phases with horizontal stripes in single crystals of the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 determined by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy. An overdamped Drude response and a small conductivity anisotropy observed in optics is consistent with a weakly temperature dependent dc conductivity and anisotropy at high temperatures. The splitting of the molecular vibrations nu27(Bu) evidences the abrupt onset of static charge order below TCO=136 K. The drop of optical conductivity measured within the ab plane of the crystal is characterized by an isotropic gap that opens of approximately 75 meV with several phonons becoming pronounced below. Conversely, the dc conductivity anisotropy rises steeply, attaining at 50 K a value 25 times larger than at high temperatures. The dielectric response within this plane reveals two broad relaxation modes of strength Deltaepsilon_LD ~= 5000 and Deltaepsilon_SD ~= 400, centered at 1 kHz < f_LD < 100 MHz and f_SD ~= 1 MHz. The anisotropy of the large-mode (LD) mean relaxation time closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc conductivity ratio. We argue that this phason-like excitation is best described as a long-wavelength excitation of a 2kF bond-charge density wave expected theoretically for layered quarter-filled electronic systems with horizontal stripes. Conversely, based on the theoretically expected ferroelectric-like nature of the charge-ordered phase, we associate the small-mode (SD) relaxation with the motion of domain-wall pairs, created at the interface between two types of domains, along the a and b axes. We also consider other possible theoretical interpretations and discuss their limitations.
We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic structure in a tetramer system SeCuO$_3$ using neutron diffraction and nuclear resonance techniques. We establish a non-collinear, commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering with a propagation vector $textbf{k} = left(0,0,1 right)$. The order parameter follows a critical behavior near $T_N = 8$ K, with a critical exponent $beta = 0.32$ in agreement with a 3D universality class. Evidence is presented that a singlet state starts to form on tetramers at temperatures as high as 200 K, and its signature is preserved within the ordered state through a strong renormalization of the ordered magnetic moment on two non-equivalent copper sites, $m_{Cu1} approx 0.4 mu_B$ and $m_{Cu2} approx 0.7 mu_B$ at 1.5 K.
