We have measured upper-critical-field $H_{text c2}$, specific heat C, and tunneling spectra of the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi${}_3$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{text c}approx 7.6$ K. Based on these measurements and relevant theoretical relations, we have evaluated various superconducting parameters for this material, including the thermodynamic critical field $H_{text c}$(0), coherence length $xi$(0), penetration depth $lambda$(0), lower-critical-field $H_{text c1}$(0), and Ginsberg-Landau parameter $kappa$(0). From the specific heat, we obtain the Debye temperature $it Theta_{text D} approx$ 280 K. We find a jump of $Delta C/gamma T_{text c}$=2.3 at $T_{text c}$ (where $it gamma$ is the normal state electronic specific coefficient), which is much larger than the weak coupling BCS value of 1.43. Our tunneling measurements revealed a gap feature in the tunneling spectra at $it Delta$ with $2it {Delta}/{text k}_{text B}T_{text c}approx$ 4.6, again larger than the weak-coupling value of 3.53. Both findings indicate that MgCNi$_3$ is a strong-coupling superconductor. In addition, we observed a pronounced zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the tunneling spectra. We discuss the possible physical origins of the observed ZBCP, especially in the context of the pairing symmetry of the material.

We report the structural parameters of superconducting MgCxNi3 (x=0.96, TC=7.3 K) as a function of temperature, from 2 K to 295 K, determined by neutron powder diffraction profile refinement. The compound has the perovskite structure over the whole temperature range, with symmetry Pm3m and a=3.81221(5) A at 295 K: no structural or long range magnetic ordering transitions were observed. The lattice parameter a and the Debye-Waller factors for the individual atoms decrease smoothly with decreasing temperature. There are no unusual changes of the structural parameters near TC.

The low temperature specific heat of the superconductor MgCNi$_3$ and a non-superconductor MgC$_{0.85}$Ni$_3$ is investigated in detail. An additional contribution is observed from the data of MgCNi$_3$ but absent in MgC$_{0.85}$Ni$_3$, which is demonstrated to be insensitive to the applied magnetic field even up to 12 Tesla. A detailed discussion on its origin is then presented. By subtracting this additional contribution, the zero field specific heat of MgCNi$_3$ can be well described by the BCS theory with the gap ratio ($Delta/k_BT_c$) determined by the previous tunneling measurements. The conventional s-wave pairing state is further proved by the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures and the behavior of the upper critical field.
We have obtained strong experimental evidence for the full determination of the superconducting gap structure in all three bands of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 for the first time. We have extended the measurements of the field-orientation dependent specific heat to include conical field rotations consisting of in-plane azimuthal angle phi-sweeps at various polar angles theta performed down to 0.1 K. Clear 4-fold oscillations of the specific heat and a rapid suppression of it by changing theta are explained only by a compensation from two types of bands with anti-phase gap anisotropies with each other. The results indicate that the active band, responsible for the superconducting instability, is the gamma-band with the lines of gap minima along the [100] directions, and the passive band is the alpha- and beta-bands with the lines of gap minima or zeros along the [110] directions in their induced superconducting gaps. We also demonstrated the scaling of the specific heat for the field in the c-direction, which supports the line-node-like gap structures running along the kz direction.
The influence of a periodic landscape of pinning sites on the vortex dynamics in Pb thin films is explored by ac-susceptibility measurements. For different amplitudes h of the ac-drive, the ac-susceptibility x=x+ix exhibits a complex field dependence associated with different dynamic regimes. At very low ac-drives where both, multiquanta vortices trapped by the antidots and interstitial vortices oscillate inside the pinning potential (intra-valley motion), a small kink in x(H) together with a very low dissipation is observed. At intermediate ac-excitations such that vortices in the antidots remain pinned whereas interstices are driven out of the pinning well, a more pronounced kink in the screening coinciding with the onset of dissipation (x(H) ~ 0) indicates the entrance of interstitial vortices. Eventually, at high enough amplitudes all vortices are set in motion and the penetration of interstitial vortices appears as a sudden reduction of the shielding power. We show that these distinctive features allow us to clearly identify the maximum number of flux quanta per hole regardless the vortex dynamic regime.
We propose and implement a direct experimental test for subdominant superconducting phases with broken time-reversal symmetry in d-wave superconductors. The critical current of 45-degree asymmetric grain boundary junctions are shown to be extremely sensitive to the predicted onset of a complex order parameter at (110)-surfaces and near magnetic impurities. Measurements in YBCO and Ni-doped YBCO junctions indicate that the symmetry at the surface is consistent with pure d-wave at all temperatures, putting limits on the magnitude and chiral domain structure of any subdominant symmetry component.
