We consider a modified extended Hubbard model (EHM) which, in addition to the on-site repulsion U and nearest-neighbor repulsion V, includes polarization effects in second-order perturbation theory. The model is equivalent to an EHM with renormalized U plus a next-nearest-neighbor repulsion term. Using a method based on topological quantum numbers (charge and spin Berry phases), we generalize to finite hopping t the quantum phase diagram in one dimension constructed by van den Brink et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4658 (1995)). At hopping t=0 there are two charge density-wave phases, one spin density-wave phase and one intermediate phase with charge and spin ordering, depending on the parameter values. At t eq 0 the nature of each phase is confirmed by studying correlation functions. However, in addition to the strong-coupling phases, a small region with bond ordering appears. The region occupied by the intermediate phase first increases and then decreases with increasing t, until it finally disappears for t of the order but larger than U. For small t, the topological transitions agree with the results of second order perturbation theory.

By using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) technique we study the phase diagram of 1D extended anisotropic Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We analyze the static correlation functions for the spin operators both in- and out-of-plane and classify the zero-temperature phases by the range of their correlations. On clusters of $64,100,200,300$ sites with open boundary conditions we isolate the boundary effects and make finite-size scaling of our results. Apart from the ferromagnetic phase, we identify two gapless spin-fluid phases and two ones with massive excitations. Based on our phase diagram and on estimates for the coupling constants known from literature, we classify the ground states of several edge-sharing materials.
We discuss the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model with both attractive and repulsive local and nonlocal interactions. The extended dynamical mean-field theory (EDMFT) and the dual boson method (DB) are compared. The latter contains additional nonlocal correlation effects that are not incorporated in EDMFT. We find that EDMFT and DB give almost identical results in the attractive $V$ regime, where phase separation occurs. This is quite a difference with the previously studied repulsive $V$ regime, where EDMFT and DB give very different phase boundaries for the checkerboard order phase, especially at small $U$.
We demonstrate that supervised machine learning (ML) with entanglement spectrum can give useful information for constructing phase diagram in the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Combining ML with infinite-size density-matrix renormalization group, we confirm that bond-order-wave phase remains stable in the thermodynamic limit.
The finite-temperature phase diagram of the Hubbard model in $d=3$ is obtained from renormalization-group analysis. It exhibits, around half filling, an antiferromagnetic phase and, between 30%--40% electron or hole doping from half filling, a new $tau $ phase in which the electron hopping strength $t$ asymptotically becomes infinite under repeated rescalings. Next to the $tau $ phase, a first-order phase boundary with very narrow phase separation (less than 2% jump in electron density) occurs. At temperatures above the $tau $ phase, an incommensurate spin modulation phase is indicated. In $d=2$, we find that the Hubbard model has no phase transition at finite temperature.
Transition metal chalcogenide Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$, a promising material for the excitonic insulator, is investigated on the basis of the quasi-one-dimensional three-chain Hubbard model with two conduction ($c$) bands and one valence ($f$) band. In the semimetallic case where only one of two $c$ bands and the $f$ band cross the Fermi level, the transition from the $c$-$f$ compensated semimetal to the uniform excitonic insulator takes place at low temperature as the same as in the semiconducting case. On the other hand, when another $c$ band also crosses the Fermi level, the system shows three types of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) excitonic orders characterized by the condensation of excitons with finite center-of-mass momentum $q$ corresponding to the three types of nesting vectors between the imbalanced two $c$ and one $f$ Fermi surfaces. The obtained FFLO states are metallic in contrast to the excitonic insulator and are expected to be observed in semimetallic Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ under high pressure.
