Based on a detailed microscopic test scenario motivated by recent empirical studies of single-vehicle data, several cellular automaton models for traffic flow are compared. We find three levels of agreement with the empirical data: 1) models that do not reproduce even qualitatively the most important empirical observations, 2) models that are on a macroscopic level in reasonable agreement with the empirics, and 3) models that reproduce the empirical data on a microscopic level as well. Our results are not only relevant for applications, but also shed new light on the relevant interactions in traffic flow.
We present results on the modeling of on- and off-ramps in cellular automata for traffic flow, especially the Nagel-Schreckenberg model. We study two different types of on-ramps that cause qualitatively the same effects. In a certain density regime one observes plateau formation in the fundamental diagram. The plateau value depends on the input-rate of cars at the on-ramp. The on-ramp acts as a local perturbation that separates the system into two regimes: A regime of free flow and another one where only jammed states exist. This phase separation is the reason for the plateau formation and implies a behaviour analogous to that of stationary defects. This analogy allows to perform very fast simulations of complex traffic networks with a large number of on- and off-ramps because one can parametrise on-ramps in an exceedingly easy way.

Emerging transportation technologies offer unprecedented opportunities to improve the efficiency of the transportation system from the perspectives of energy consumption, congestion, and emissions. One of these technologies is connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). With the prospective duality of operations of CAVs and human driven vehicles in the same roadway space (also referred to as a mixed stream), CAVs are expected to address a variety of traffic problems particularly those that are either caused or exacerbated by the heterogeneous nature of human driving. In efforts to realize such specific benefits of CAVs in mixed-stream traffic, it is essential to understand and simulate the behavior of human drivers in such environments, and microscopic traffic flow (MTF) models can be used to carry out this task. By helping to comprehend the fundamental dynamics of traffic flow, MTF models serve as a powerful approach to assess the impacts of such flow in terms of safety, stability, and efficiency. In this paper, we seek to calibrate MTF models based on empirical trajectory data as basis of not only understanding traffic dynamics such as traffic instabilities, but ultimately using CAVs to mitigate stop-and-go wave propagation. The paper therefore duly considers the heterogeneity and uncertainty associated with human driving behavior in order to calibrate the dynamics of each HDV. Also, the paper designs the CAV controllers based on the microscopic HDV models that are calibrated in real time. The data for the calibration is from the Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM) trajectory datasets. The results are encouraging, as they indicate the efficacy of the designed controller to significantly improve not only the stability of the mixed traffic stream but also the safety of both CAVs and HDVs in the traffic stream.

Tolls are collected on many highways as a means of traffic control and revenue generation. However, the presence of tollbooths on highway surely slows down traffic flow. Here, we investigate how the presence of tollbooths affect the average car speed using a simple-minded single lane deterministic discrete traffic model. More importantly, the model is exactly solvable.
Boundary-induced phase transitions are one of the surprising phenomena appearing in nonequilibrium systems. These transitions have been found in driven systems, especially the asymmetric simple exclusion process. However, so far no direct observations of this phenomenon in real systems exists. Here we present evidence for the appearance of such a nonequilibrium phase transition in traffic flow occurring on highways in the vicinity of on- and off-ramps. Measurements on a German motorway close to Cologne show a first-order nonequilibrium phase transition between a free-flow phase and a congested phase. It is induced by the interplay of density waves (caused by an on-ramp) and a shock wave moving on the motorway. The full phase diagram, including the effect of off-ramps, is explored using computer simulations and suggests means to optimize the capacity of a traffic network.
