We present integrated H alpha measurements obtained from imaging observations of 98 late-type galaxies, primarily selected in the Coma supercluster. These data, combined with H alpha photometry from the literature, include a magnitude selected sample of spiral (Sa to Irr) galaxies belonging to the Great Wall complete up to mp=15.4, thus composed of galaxies brighter than Mp=-18.8 (H0=100 km Mpc^-1 s^-1). The frequency distribution of the H alpha E.W., determined for the first time from an optically complete sample, is approximately gaussian peaking at E.W. ~25 A. We find that, at the present limiting luminosity, the star formation properties of spiral+Irr galaxies members of the Coma and A1367 clusters do not differ significantly from those of the isolated ones belonging to the Great Wall. The present analysis confirms the well known increase of the current massive star formation rate (SFR) with Hubble type. Moreover perhaps a more fundamental anticorrelation exists between the SFR and the mass of disk galaxies: low-mass spirals and dwarf systems have present SFRs ~50 times higher than giant spirals. This result is consistent with the idea that disk galaxies are coeval, evolve as closed systems with exponentially declining SFR and that the mass of their progenitor protogalaxies is the principal parameter governing their evolution. Massive systems having high initial efficiency of collapse, or a short collapse time-scale, have retained little gas to feed the present epoch of star formation. These findings support the conclusions of Gavazzi & Scodeggio (1996) who studyed the color-mass relation of a local galaxy sample and agree with the analysis by Cowie et al. (1996) who traced the star formation history of galaxies up to z>1.

Neutral hydrogen represents the major observable baryonic constituent of galaxies that fuels the formation of stars through the transformation in molecular hydrogen. The emission of the hydrogen recombination line Halpha is the most direct tracer of the process that transforms gas (fuel) into stars. We continue to present Halpha3 (acronym for Halpha-alpha-alpha), an extensive Halpha+[NII] narrow-band imaging campaign of galaxies selected from the HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA), using the instrumentation available at the San Pedro Martir observatory (Mexico). In only four years since 2011 we were able to complete in 48 nights the Halpha imaging observations of 724 galaxies in the region of the Coma supercluster 10^h < R.A. <16^h; 24^o < Dec. <28^o and 3900<cz<9000 kms^{-1}. Of these, 603 are selected from the HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA) and constitute a 97% complete sample. They provide for the first time a complete census of the massive star formation properties of local gas-rich galaxies belonging to different environments (cluster vs filaments), morphological type (spirals vs dwarf Irr), over a wide range of stellar mass (10^{8}-10^{11.5} Modot) in the Coma Supercluster. The present Paper V provides the Halpha data and the derived star formation rates for the observed galaxies.
High sensitivity 21-cm HI line observations, with an rms noise level of sim 0.5 mJy, were made of 35 spiral galaxies in the Coma Supercluster, using the refurbished Arecibo telescope, which resulted in the detection of 25 objects. These data, combined with the measurements available from the literature, provide the set of HI data for 94% of all late-type galaxies in the Coma Supercluster with an apparent photographic magnitude m_p <15.7 mag. We confirm that the typical scale of HI deficiency around the Coma cluster is 2 Mpc, i.e. one virial radius. Comparing the HI mass function (HIMF) of cluster with non-cluster members of the Coma Supercluster we detect a shortage of high HI mass galaxies among cluster members that can be ascribed to the pattern of HI deficiency found in rich clusters.
We present the analysis of Halpha3, an Halpha imaging survey of 409 galaxies selected from the HI Arecibo ALFALFA Survey in the Local Supercluster, including the Virgo cluster. We explore the relations between the stellar mass, the HI mass and the current, massive SFR of nearby galaxies in the Virgo cluster and we compare them with those of isolated galaxies in the Local Supercluster, disentangling the role of the environment in shaping the star formation properties of galaxies at the present cosmological epoch. We investigate the relationships between atomic neutral gas and newly formed stars in different environments, across many morphological types, and over a wide range of stellar masses adopting an updated calibration of the HI deficiency parameter. Studying the mean properties of late-type galaxies in the Local Supercluster, we find that galaxies in increasing local galaxy density conditions (or decreasing projected angular separation from M87) show a significant decrease in the HI content and in the mean specific star formation rate, along with a progressive reddening of their stellar populations. The gradual quenching of the star formation occurs outside-in, consistently with the predictions of the ram pressure model. Once considered as a whole, the Virgo cluster is effective in removing neutral hydrogen from galaxies, and this perturbation is strong enough to appreciably reduce the SFR of its entire galaxy population. An estimate of the present infall rate of 300-400 galaxies per Gyr in the Virgo cluster is obtained from the number of existing HI-rich late-type systems, assuming 200-300 Myr as the time scale for HI ablation. If the infall process has been acting at constant rate this would imply that the Virgo cluster has formed approximately 2 Gyr ago, consistently with the idea that Virgo is in a young state of dynamical evolution.
This paper presents the first results of an Halpha imaging survey of galaxies in the central regions of the A2151 cluster. A total of 50 sources were detected in Halpha. The morphologies of the 43 H$alpha$ selected galaxies range from grand design spirals and interacting galaxies to blue compacts and tidal dwarfs or isolated extragalactic HII regions, spanning a range of magnitudes of -21 <= MB <= -12.5 mag. A comparison with the clusters Coma and A1367 and a sample of field galaxies has shown the presence of cluster galaxies with L(Halpha) lower than expected for their MB, a consecuence of the cluster environment. This fact results in differences in the L(Halpha) vs. EW(Halpha) and L(Halpha) distributions of the clusters with respect to the field, and in cluster to cluster variations of these quantities, which we propose are driven by a global cluster property as the total mass. Overall, we conclude that both, the global cluster environment as well as the cluster merging history play a non negligible role in the integral star formation properties of clusters of galaxies.

We present optical observations of a sample of 57 spiral galaxies and describe the procedures followed to reduce the data. We have obtained images in the optical B and I broad bands, as well as in H alpha, with moderate spatial resolution and across wide enough fields to image the complete disks of the galaxies. In addition, we observed 55 of our sample galaxies in the R and eight in the V band, and imaged a subset through a dedicated narrow continuum filter for the H alpha line. We describe the data reduction procedures we developed in the course of this work to register, combine and photometrically calibrate each set of images for an individual galaxy. We describe in some detail the procedure used to subtract the continuum emission from our H alpha images. In companion papers, we describe near-infrared imaging of the galaxy sample, and present analyses of disk scale lengths, and of properties of bars, rings, and HII regions in the sample galaxies. The images described here will be made available for use by other researchers through the CDS.
