We present analysis of the optical and X-ray spectra of the low Galactic latitude bright (F(2-10) = 3.6 10^{-11} erg/cm2/s) source 4U 1344-60. On the basis of the optical data we propose to classify 4U 1344-60 as an intermediate type Seyfert galaxy and we measure a value of z=0.012+/-0.001 for its redshift. From the XMM-Newton observation we find that the overall X-ray spectral shape of 4U 1344-60 is complex and can be described by a power-law continuum (Gamma ~ 1.55) obscured by two neutral absorption components (Nh(f) ~ 10^{22} cm^{-2} and Nh(p) ~ 4 10^{22} cm^{-2}), the latter covering only the ~50% of the primary X-ray source. The X-ray data therefore lend support to our classification of 4U 1344-60. It exhibits a broad and skewed Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV, which suggests the existence of an accretion disk that is able to reprocess the primary continuum down to a few gravitational radii. Such a line represents one of the clearest examples of a relativistic line observed by XMM-Newton so far. Our analysis has also revealed the marginal presence of two narrow line-like emission features at ~4.9 and ~5.2 keV.

We present detailed time-averaged X-ray spectroscopy in the 0.5--10 keV band of the Seyfert~1.9 galaxy NGC 2992 with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS). We model the complex continuum in detail. There is an Fe K line emission complex that we model with broad and narrow lines and we show that the intensities of the two components are decoupled at a confidence level >3sigma. The broad Fe K line has an EW of 118 (+32,-61) eV and could originate in an accretion disk (with inclination angle greater than ~30 degrees). The narrow Fe Kalpha line has an EW of 163 (+47,-26) eV and is unresolved FWHM <4090 km/s) and likely originates in distant matter. The absolute flux in the narrow line implies that the column density out of the line-of-sight could be much higher than measured in the line-of-sight, and that the mean (historically-averaged) continuum luminosity responsible for forming the line could be a factor of several higher than that measured from the data. We also detect the narrow Fe Kbeta line with a high signal-to-noise ratio and describe a new robust method to constrain the ionization state of Fe responsible for the Fe Kalpha and Fe Kbeta lines that does not require any knowledge of possible gravitational and Doppler energy shifts affecting the line energies. For the distant line-emitting matter (e.g. the putative obscuring torus) we deduce that the predominant ionization state is lower than Fe VIII (at 99% confidence), conservatively taking into account residual calibration uncertainties in the XIS energy scale and theoretical and experimental uncertainties in the Fe K fluorescent line energies. From the limits on a possible Compton-reflection continuum it is likely that the narrow Fe Kalpha and Fe Kbeta lines originate in a Compton-thin structure.

I report a tentative ($sim4sigma$) emission line at $ u=100.84,$GHz from COS-3mm-1, a 3mm-selected galaxy reported by Williams et al. 2019 that is undetected at optical and near infrared wavelengths. The line was found in the ALMA Science Archive after re-processing ALMA band 3 observations targeting a different source. Assuming the line corresponds to the $rm CO(6to5)$ transition, this tentative detection implies a spectroscopic redshift of $z=5.857$, in agreement with the galaxys redshift constraints from multi-wavelength photometry. This would make this object the highest redshift 3mm-selected galaxy and one of the highest redshift dusty star-forming galaxies known to-date. Here, I report the characteristics of this tentative detection and the physical properties that can be inferred assuming the line is real. Finally, I advocate for follow-up observations to corroborate this identification and to confirm the high-redshift nature of this optically-dark dusty star-forming galaxy.

The Fe-K line, an important physical diagnostic in the X-ray spectra of AGN, has been notoriously difficult to measure in the high-luminosity, radio-loud quasar 3C 273 (z=0.158). On the few occasions that it has been detected its intrinsic width has been thought to be narrow (FWHM < 10,000 km/s) with an equivalent width (EW) of a few tens of eV.This was consistent with the general trend that as one goes from low to high luminosity AGNs the Fe-K line goes from being strong (EW ~200-300 eV) and broad (FWHM ~ 100,000 km/s) to being weak and narrow, or absent altogether. Here we present the results of new ASCA and RXTE observations, together with archival ASCA data, and show for the first time that the Fe-K line in 3C 273 is as broad as that seen in Seyfert 1. The line is resolved in two of the observations, with a mean Gaussian width of 0.8 +/- 0.3 keV, or FWHM of 0.3 +/- 0.1c. The smallest and largest EW measured is 43 +/- 34 eV, and 133 (+52,-53) eV respectively (quasar frame). The Compton-reflection continuum is less than 10% of that expected from a centrally illuminated semi-infinite, face-on, Compton-thick disk, confirming previous studies that Compton reflection is negligible in 3C 273. The largest values of the Fe-K line EW are under-predicted if the line originates in the disk, unless a time lag longer than several days between line and continuum and/or an over-abundance of Fe is invoked. We cannot unambiguously constrain the disk inclination angle. About 60 deg is preferred for a cold disk, while a face-on disk is allowed if the ionization state of Fe is H-like.
Broad Fe K-alpha emission lines have recently been reported in a number of Galactic black holes. Such lines are useful accretion flow diagnostics because they may be produced at the inner accretion disk and shaped by relativistic effects, but in general they have only been observed at luminosities of L_X ~ 10^(37-38) erg/s in soft X-rays. The Galactic microquasar V4641 Sgr -- widely known for its 12.2 Crab (1.5-12 keV) outburst in 1999 September -- displayed low-level activity in 1999 March. BeppoSAX observed the source in this state and Fe K-alpha line emission was found (in t Zand et al. 2000). In re-analyzing these data, we find strong evidence that the Fe K-alpha line profile is broadened. For the most likely values of the source distance and black hole mass measured by Orosz et al. (2001), our fits to the total spectrum indicate that the source was observed at a luminosity of L_X = 1.9 (+1.0, -0.8) * 10^(36) erg/s (2-10 keV), or L_X/L_Edd. = 1.8 (+0.9, -0.8) * 10^(-3). Advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) models predict a radially-recessed disk in this regime. In contrast, fits to the observed Fe K-alpha emission line profile with a relativistic line model constrain the inner disk to be consistent with the marginally stable circular orbit of a Schwarzschild black hole.
We present Keck/LRIS spectra of a candidate damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) galaxy toward the QSO 3C196 (z_em = 0.871). The DLA absorption system has a redshift of z_DLA = 0.437, and a galaxy at 1.5 from the QSO has been identified in high resolution imaging with WFPC2/HST. We have detected emission lines of [O II] 3727A, Hbeta, [O III] 5007A, Halpha and [N II] 6584A at the absorption redshift. Based on the emission lines, we have found the redshift of the galaxy to be z_em = 0.4376 +/- 0.0006. The emission lines also enabled us to calculate the extinction-corrected luminosities and metallicity indicators using established indices based on line strengths of different emission lines. These indicators suggest that the ISM of the DLA galaxy has a high metallicity comparable to or perhaps twice as much as solar (e.g. 12+log (O/H) = 8.98 +/- 0.07). Based on the strengths of Halpha and on the reddening derived from the relative strengths of Halpha and Hbeta, the star formation rate is 4.7 +/- 0.8 M_solar/yr. This places the galaxy in the range of gas-rich spiral galaxies.
