Higher Criticism is a recently developed statistic for non-Gaussian detection, proposed in Donoho & Jin 2004. We find that Higher Criticism is useful for two purposes. First, Higher Criticism has competitive detection power, and non-Gaussianity is detected at the level 99% in the first year WMAP data. We find that the Higher Criticism value of WMAP is outside the 99% confidence region at a wavelet scale of 5 degrees (99.46% of Higher Criticism values based on simulated maps are below the values for WMAP). Second, Higher Criticism offers a way to locate a small portion of data that accounts for the non-Gaussianity. Using Higher Criticism, we have successfully identified a ring of pixels centered at (lapprox 209 deg, bapprox -57 deg), which seems to account for the observed detection of non-Gaussianity at the wavelet scale of 5 degrees. Note that the detection is achieved in wavelet space first. Second, it is always possible that a fraction of pixels within the ring might deviate from Gaussianity even if they do not appear to be above the 99% confidence level in wavelet space. The location of the ring coincides with the cold spot detected in Vielva et al. 2004 and Cruz et al. 2005.

We consider the problem of detecting a sparse mixture as studied by Ingster (1997) and Donoho and Jin (2004). We consider a wide array of base distributions. In particular, we study the situation when the base distribution has polynomial tails, a situation that has not received much attention in the literature. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that in the context of such a power-law distribution, the higher criticism does not achieve the detection boundary. However, the scan statistic does.
We perform a blind multi-component analysis of the WMAP 1 year foreground cleaned maps using SMICA (Spectral Matching Independent Component Analysis). We provide a new estimate of the CMB power spectrum as well as the amplitude of the CMB anisotropies across frequency channels. We show that the CMB anisotropies are compatible with temperature fluctuations as expected from the standard paradigm. The analysis also allows us to identify and separate a weak residual galactic emission present significantly in the Q-band outside of the Kp2 mask limits, and mainly concentrated at low galactic latitudes. We produce a map of this residual component by Wiener filtering using estimated parameters. The level of contamination of CMB data by this component is compatible with the WMAP team estimation of foreground residual contamination. In addition, the multi-component analysis allows us to estimate jointly the power spectrum of unresolved point source emission.
We present evidence for the detection of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type (fNL), using the temperature information of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the WMAP 3-year data. We employ the bispectrum estimator of non-Gaussianity described in (Yadav et al. 2007) which allows us to analyze the entirety of the WMAP data without an arbitrary cut-off in angular scale. Using the combined information from WMAPs two main science channels up to lmax=750 and the conservative Kp0 foreground mask we find 27 < fNL < 147 at 95% C.L., with a central value of fNL=87. This corresponds to a rejection of fNL=0 at more than 99.5% significance. We find that this detection is robust to variations in lmax, frequency and masks, and that no known foreground, instrument systematic, or secondary anisotropy explains our signal while passing our suite of tests. We explore the impact of several analysis choices on the stated significance and find 2.5 sigma for the most conservative view. We conclude that the WMAP 3-year data disfavors canonical single field slow-roll inflation.
We constrain the amplitude of primordial non-Gaussianity in the CMB data taking into account the presence of foreground residuals in the maps. We generalise the needlet bispectrum estimator marginalizing over the amplitudes of thermal dust, free-free and synchrotron templates. We apply our procedure to WMAP 5 year data, finding fNL= 38pm 47 (1 sigma), while the analysis without marginalization provides fNL= 35pm 42. Splitting the marginalization over each foreground separately, we found that the estimates of fNL are positively cross correlated of 17%, 12% with the dust and synchrotron respectively, while a negative cross correlation of about -10% is found for the free-free component.

We present limits to the amplitude of non-Gaussian primordial fluctuations in the WMAP 1-year cosmic microwave background sky maps. A non-linear coupling parameter, f_NL, characterizes the amplitude of a quadratic term in the primordial potential. We use two statistics: one is a cubic statistic which measures phase correlations of temperature fluctuations after combining all configurations of the angular bispectrum. The other uses the Minkowski functionals to measure the morphology of the sky maps. Both methods find the WMAP data consistent with Gaussian primordial fluctuations and establish limits, -58<f_NL<134, at 95% confidence. There is no significant frequency or scale dependence of f_NL. The WMAP limit is 30 times better than COBE, and validates that the power spectrum can fully characterize statistical properties of CMB anisotropy in the WMAP data to high degree of accuracy. Our results also validate the use of a Gaussian theory for predicting the abundance of clusters in the local universe. We detect a point-source contribution to the bispectrum at 41 GHz, b_src = (9.5+-4.4) X 1e-5 uK^3 sr^2, which gives a power spectrum from point sources of c_src = (15+-6) X 1e-3 uK^2 sr in thermodynamic temperature units. This value agrees well with independent estimates of source number counts and the power spectrum at 41 GHz, indicating that b_src directly measures residual source contributions.
