We present Sloan Digital Sky Survey and United States Naval Observatory observations of the V1647 Ori protostar and surrounding field near NGC 2068. V1647 Ori, the likely driving source for HH 23, brightened significantly in November 2003. Analysis of SDSS imaging acquired in November 1998 and February 2002 during the quiescent state, recent USNO photometry, and published 2MASS and Gemini data shows that the color changes associated with brightening suggest an EXor outburst rather than a simple dust clearing event.

We present a study of the newly discovered McNeils nebula in Orion using the JHKs-band simultaneous observations with the near-infrared (NIR) camera SIRIUS on the IRSF 1.4m telescope. The cometary infrared nebula is clearly seen extending toward north and south from the NIR source (V1647 Orionis) that illuminates McNeils nebula. The compact nebula has an apparent diameter of about 70 arcsec. The nebula is blue (bright in J) and has a cavity structure with two rims extending toward north-east and north-west. The north-east rim is brighter and sharp, while the north-west rim is diffuse. The north-east rim can be traced out to ~ 40 arcsec from the location of the NIR source. In contrast, no cavity structure is seen toward the south, although diffuse nebula is extended out to ~ 20 arcsec. New NIR photometric data show a significant variation in the magnitudes (> 0.15 mag) of the source of McNeils nebula within a period of one week, that is possibly under the phase of eruptive variables like FUors or EXors.
(Abridged) We studied the brightness and spectral evolution of the young eruptive star V1647 Ori during its recent outburst in the period 2004 February - 2006 Sep. We performed a photometric follow-up in the bands V, R_C, I_C, J, H, K_s as well as visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The main results are as follows: The brightness of V1647 Ori stayed more than 4 mag above the pre-outburst level until 2005 October when it started a rapid fading. In the high state we found a periodic component in the optical light curves with a period of 56 days. The delay between variations of the star and variations in the brightness of clump of nearby nebulosity corresponds to an angle of 61+/-14 degrees between the axis of the nebula and the line of sight. A steady decrease of HI emission line fluxes could be observed. In 2006 May, in the quiescent phase, the HeI 1.083 line was observed in emission, contrary to its deep blueshifted absorption observed during the outburst. The J-H and H-K_s color maps of the infrared nebula reveal an envelope around the star. The color distribution of the infrared nebula suggests reddening of the scattered light inside a thick circumstellar disk. We show that the observed properties of V1647 Ori could be interpreted in the framework of the thermal instability models of Bell et al. (1995). V1647 Ori might belong to a new class of young eruptive stars, defined by relatively short timescales, recurrent outbursts, modest increase in bolometric luminosity and accretion rate, and an evolutionary state earlier than that of typical EXors.
We studied the Class I protostar 2MASS 22352345+7517076 whose dramatic brightening between the IRAS, Akari, and WISE surveys was reported by Onozato et al. (2015). 2MASS 22352345+7517076 is a member of a small group of low-mass young stellar objects, associated with IRAS 22343+7501 in the molecular cloud Lynds 1251. The IRAS, ISO, Spitzer, Akari, Herschel, and WISE missions observed different stages of its outburst. Supplemented these data with archival and our own near-infrared observations, and considering the contributions of neighbouring sources to the mid-infrared fluxes we studied the nature and environment of the outbursting object, and its photometric variations from 1983 to 2017. The low-state bolometric luminosity Lbol ~ 32 Lsun is indicative of a 100000-200000 years old protostar of 1.6-1.8 solar masses. Its 2-micron brightness started rising between 1993 and 1998, reached a peak in 2009-2011, and started declining in 2015. Changes in the spectral energy distribution suggest that the outburst was preceded by a decade-long, slow brightening in the near-infrared. The actual accretion burst occurred between 2004 and 2007. We fitted the spectral energy distribution in the bright phases with simple accretion disc models. The modelling suggested an increase of the disc accretion rate from some 3.5times 10^{-7} Msun yr^{-1} to 1.1 times 10^{-4} Msun yr^{-1}. The central star accreted nearly 10^{-3} solar masses, about a Jupiter mass during the ten years of the outburst. We observed H_2 emission lines in the K-band spectrum during the fading phase in 2017. The associated optical nebulosity RNO 144 and the Herbig-Haro object HH 149 have not exhibited significant variation in shape and brightness during the outburst.
We present a detailed study of McNeils nebula (V1647 Ori) in its ongoing outburst phase starting from September 2008 to March 2013. Our 124 nights of photometric observations were carried out in optical V, R, I and near-infrared J, H, K bands, and 59 nights of medium resolution spectroscopic observations were done in 5200 - 9000 Ang wavelength range. All observations were carried out with 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope and 2-m IUCAA Girawali Telescope. Our observations show that over last four and a half years, V1647 Ori and the region C near Herbig-Haro object, HH 22A, have been undergoing a slow dimming at a rate of ~0.04 mag/yr and ~0.05 mag/yr respectively in R-band, which is 6 times slower than the rate during similar stage of V1647 Ori in 2003 outburst. We detected change in flux distribution over the reflection nebula implying changes in circumstellar matter distribution between 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Apart from steady wind of velocity ~350 km/s we detected two episodic magnetic reconnection driven winds. Forbidden [O I] 6300 Ang and [Fe II] 7155 Ang lines were also detected implying shock regions probably from jets. We tried to explain the outburst timescales of V1647 Ori using the standard models of FUors kind of outburst and found that pure thermal instability models like Bell & Lin (1994) cannot explain the variations in timescales. In the framework of various instability models we conclude that one possible reason for sudden ending of 2003 outburst in 2005 November was due to a low density region or gap in the inner region (~ 1 AU) of the disc.

We present new high-resolution infrared echelle spectra of V1647 Ori, the young star that illuminates McNeils nebula. From the start, V1647 Ori has been an enigmatic source that has defied classification, in some ways resembling eruptive stars of the FUor class and in other respects the EXor variables. V1647 Ori underwent an outburst in 2003 before fading back to its pre-outburst brightness in 2006. In 2008, it underwent a new outburst. In this paper we present high-resolution K-band and M-band spectra from the W. M. Keck Observatory that were acquired during the 2008 outburst. We compare the spectra to spectra acquired during the previous outburst and quiescent phases. We find that the luminosity and full width at half maximum power of Br-gamma increased as the star has brightened and decreased when the star faded indicating that these phases are driven by variations in the accretion rate. We also show that the temperature of the CO emission has varied with the stellar accretion rate confirming suggestions from modeling of the heating mechanisms of the inner disk (e.g. Glassgold et al. 2004). Finally we find that the lowest energy blue-shifted CO absorption lines originally reported in 2007 are no longer detected. The absence of these lines confirms the short-lived nature of the outflow launched at the start of the quiescent phase in 2006.
