We determine and tabulate A(lambda)/A(K), the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction, in the Galactic plane for 1.25um<lambda<8.0um along two lines of sight: l~42 and l~284. The first is a relatively quiescent and unremarkable region; the second contains the giant HII region RCW 49 as well as a ``field region unrelated to the cluster and nebulosity. Areas near these Galactic longitudes were imaged at J, H, and K bands by 2MASS and at 3--8um by Spitzer for the GLIMPSE Legacy program. We measure the mean values of the color excess ratios (A(lambda)-A(K))/(A(J)-A(K)) directly from the color distributions of observed stars. The extinction ratio between two of the filters, e.g. A(J)/A(K), is required to calculate A(lambda)/A(K) from those measured ratios. We use the apparent JHK magnitudes of giant stars along our two sightlines, and fit the reddening as a function of magnitude (distance) to determine A(J)/kpc, A(K)/kpc, and A(J)/A(K). Our values of A(lambda)/A(K) show a flattening across the 3--8um wavelength range, roughly consistent with the Lutz 1996 extinction measurements derived for the sightline toward the Galactic center.

The properties of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM) nearest the Sun are poorly understood because the low column densities of dust toward nearby stars induce little photometric reddening, rendering the grains largely undetectable. Stellar polarimetry offers one pathway to deducing the properties of this diffuse material. Here we present multi-wavelength aperture polarimetry measurements of seven bright stars chosen to probe interstellar polarization near the edge of the Local Hot Bubble (LHB) - an amorphous region of relatively low density interstellar gas and dust extending ~70-150 pc from the Sun. The measurements were taken using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope. HIPPI is an aperture stellar polarimeter with a demonstrated sensitivity of 4.3 parts-per-million (ppm). Of the stars observed two are polarized to a much greater degree than the others; they have a wavelength of maximum polarization ($lambda_{max}$) of ~550 $pm$ 20 nm - similar to that of stars beyond the LHB - and we conclude that they are in the wall of the LHB. The remaining five stars have polarizations of ~70 to 160 ppm, of these four have a much bluer $lambda_{max}$, ~350 $pm$ 50 nm. Bluer values of $lambda_{max}$ may indicate grains shocked during the evolution of the Loop I Superbubble. The remaining star, HD 4150 is not well fit by a Serkowski curve, and may be intrinsically polarized.
Spectra from the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on ISO exhibit artifacts at 4.5 and 8 um. These artifacts appear in spectra from a recent data release, OLP 10.0, as spurious broad emission features in the spectra of stars earlier than ~F0, such as alpha CMa. Comparison of absolutely calibrated spectra of standard stars to corresponding spectra from the SWS reveals that these artifacts result from an underestimation of the strength of the CO and SiO molecular bands in the spectra of sources used as calibrators by the SWS. Although OLP 10.0 was intended to be the final data release, these findings have led to an additional release addressing this issue, OLP 10.1, which corrects the artifacts.

An improved high-resolution and deep A$_{Ks}$ foreground dust extinction map is presented for the Galactic disk area within $295^{circ} lesssim l lesssim 350^{circ}$, $-1.0^{circ} lesssim b lesssim +1.0^{circ}$. At some longitudes the map reaches up to $|b|sim2.25^{circ}$, for a total of $sim$148 deg$^2$. The map was constructed via the Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excess (RJCE) technique based on deep near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) photometry. The new extinction map features a maximum bin size of 1, and relies on NIR observations from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and new data from ESOs Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey, in concert with MIR observations from the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE). The VVV photometry penetrates $sim$4 magnitudes fainter than 2MASS, and provides enhanced sampling of the underlying stellar populations in this heavily obscured region. Consequently, the new results supersede existing RJCE maps tied solely to brighter photometry, revealing a systematic underestimation of extinction in prior work that was based on shallower data. The new high-resolution and large-scale extinction map presented here is readily available to the community through a web query interface.
Near-infrared polarimetric imaging observations toward the Galactic center have been carried out to examine the efficiency and wavelength dependence of interstellar polarization. A total area of about 5.7 deg$^2$ is covered in the $J$, $H$, and $K_S$ bands. We examined the polarization efficiency, defined as the ratio of degree of polarization to color excess. The interstellar medium between the Galactic center and us shows the polarization efficiency lower than that in the Galactic disk by a factor of three. Moreover we investigated the spatial variation of the polarization efficiency by comparing it with those of color excess, degree of polarization, and position angle. The spatial variations of color excess and degree of polarization depend on the Galactic latitude, while the polarization efficiency varies independently of the Galactic structure. Position angles are nearly parallel to the Galactic plane, indicating the longitudinal magnetic field configuration between the Galactic center and us. The polarization efficiency anticorrelates with dispersions of position angles. The low polarization efficiency and its spatial variation can be explained by the differences of the magnetic field directions along the line-of-sight. From the lower polarization efficiency, we suggest a higher strength of a random component relative to a uniform component of the magnetic field between the Galactic center and us. We also derived the ratios of degree of polarization $p_H/p_J$ = 0.581 $pm$ 0.004 and $p_{K_S}/p_H$ = 0.620 $pm$ 0.002. The power law indices of the wavelength dependence of polarization are $beta_{JH}$ = 2.08 $pm$ 0.02 and $beta_{HK_S}$ = 1.76 $pm$ 0.01. Therefore the wavelength dependence of interstellar polarization exhibits flattening toward longer wavelengths in the range of 1.25$-$2.14 $micron$. The flattening would be caused by aligned large-size dust grains.
We present photometry, photometric redshifts and extra galactic number counts for ultra deep 15 micron mapping of the gravitational lensing cluster Abell 2218 (A2218), which is the deepest image taken by any facility at this wavelength. This data resolves the cosmic infrared background (CIRB) beyond the 80% that blank field AKARI surveys aim to achieve. To gain an understanding of galaxy formation and evolution over the age of the Universe a necessary step is to fully resolve the CIRB, which represents the dust-shrouded cosmic star formation history. Observing through A2218 gives magnifications of up to a factor of 10, thus allowing the sampling of a more representative spread of high redshift galaxies, which comprise the bulk of the CIRB. 19 pointed observations were taken by AKARIs IRC MIR-L channel, and a final combined image with an area of 122.3 square arcminutes and effective integration time of 8460 seconds was achieved. The 5 sigma sensitivity limit is estimated at 41.7 uJy. An initial 5 sigma catalogue of 565 sources was extracted giving 39 beams per source, which shows the image is confusion limited. Our 15 micron number counts show strong evolution consistent with galaxy evolution models that incorporate downsizing in star formation.
