To understand luminous AGNs in the z<1 universe, the ASCA AGN samples are the best at present. Combining the identified sample of AGNs from ASCA Large Sky Survey and Medium Sensitivity Survey, the sample of hard X-ray selected AGNs have been expanded up to 108 AGNs above the flux limit of 10^{-13} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 2-10 keV hard X-ray band. We present results of optical identification of the X-ray sources detected in the ASCA Large Sky Survey. Optical spectroscopic observations were done for 34 X-ray sources which were detected with the SIS in the 2-7 keV band above 3.5 sigma. The sources are identified with 30 AGNs, 2 clusters of galaxies, and 1 galactic star. Only 1 source is still unidentified. The flux limit of the sample corresponds to 1 x 10^{-13} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 2-10 keV band. Based on the sample, the paper discusses optical and X-ray spectral properties of the AGNs, contribution of the sources to the Cosmic X-ray Background, and redshift and luminosity distributions of the AGNs. An interesting result is that the redshift distribution of the AGNs suggests a deficiency of high-redshift (0.5 < z < 2) and luminous (Lx(2-10 keV) > 10^{44} erg s^{-1}) absorbed narrow-line AGNs (so called type 2 QSOs).

The age and chemical composition of the stars in present-day galaxies carry important clues about their star formation processes. The latest generation of population synthesis models have allowed to derive age and stellar metallicity estimates for large samples of low-redshift galaxies. After reviewing the main results about the distribution in ages and metallicities as a function of galaxy mass, I will concentrate on recent analysis that aims at disentangling the dependences of stellar populations properties on environment and on galaxy stellar mass. Finally, new models that predict the response of the full spectrum to variations in [alpha/Fe] will allow us to derive accurate estimates of element abundance ratios and gain deeper insight into the timescales of star formation cessation.
Recent models of super-massive black hole (SMBH) and host galaxy joint evolution predict the presence of a key phase where accretion, traced by obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) emission, is coupled with powerful star formation. Then feedback processes likely self-regulate the SMBH growth and quench the star-formation activity. AGN in this important evolutionary phase have been revealed in the last decade via surveys at different wavelengths. On the one hand, moderate-to-deep X-ray surveys have allowed a systematic search for heavily obscured AGN, up to very high redshifts (z~5). On the other hand, infrared/optical surveys have been invaluable in offering complementary methods to select obscured AGN also in cases where the nuclear X-ray emission below 10 keV is largely hidden to our view. In this review I will present my personal perspective of the field of obscured accretion from AGN surveys.

We present the first results of the Chandra and optical follow-up observations of hard X-ray sources detected in the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey (AMSS). Optical identifications are made for five objects. Three of them show either weak or absent optical narrow emission lines and are at low redshift <z>~0.06. One of them is a broad line object at z=0.910 and one is a z=0.460 object with only narrow lines. All the narrow line objects show strong evidence for absorption in their X-ray spectra. Their line ratios are consistent with a Seyfert II/LINER identification as are the line widths. The three low redshift objects have the colors of normal galaxies and apparently the light is dominated by stars. This could be due to the extinction of the underlying nuclear continuum by the same matter that absorbs X-rays and/or due to the dilution of the central source by starlight. These results suggest that X-ray sources that appear as ``normal galaxies in optical and near-IR bands significantly contribute to the hard X-ray background. This population of objects has a high space density and probably dominates the entire population of active galaxies.

Results of optical identification of the ASCA Lynx deep survey are presented. Six X-ray sources are detected in the 2-7 keV band using the SIS in a 20x20 field of view with fluxes larger than ~4x10^{-14} erg s-1 cm-2 in the band. Follow-up optical spectroscopic observations were made, and five out of six sources are identified with AGNs/QSOs at redshifts of 0.5-1.3. We also identify two more additional X-ray sources detected in a soft X-ray band with AGNs/QSOs. It is found that three QSOs identified are located at z~1.3. Two rich clusters and several groups of galaxies are also placed at the same redshift in the surveyed field, and projected separations between the QSOs and the clusters are 3-8 Mpc at the redshift.
