The reaction of collective oscillations excited in the interaction between aperiodically growing Jeans-type gravity perturbations and stars of a rapidly rotating disk of flat galaxies is considered. An equation is derived which describes the change in the main body of equilibrium distribution of stars in the framework of the nonresonant weakly nonlinear theory. Certain applications of the theory to the problem of relaxation of the Milky Way at radii where two-body relaxation is not effective are explored. The theory, as applied to the Solar neighborhood, accounts for observed features, such as the shape for the velocity ellipsoid of stars and the increase in star random velocities with age.

We investigate the Jeans instability of a galactic disk embedded in a dynamically responsive dark halo. It is shown that the disk-halo system becomes nominally Jeans unstable. On small scales the instability is suppressed, if the Toomre stability index Q_T is higher than a certain threshold, but on large scales the Jeans instability sets invariably in. However, using a simple self-consistent disk-halo model it is demonstrated that this occurs on scales which are much larger than the system so that this is indeed only a nominal effect. From a practical point of view the Jeans instability of galactic disks is not affected by a live dark halo.

We analyze the effect of a gravitational field on the sound modes of superfluids. We derive an instability condition that generalizes the well known Jeans instability of the sound mode in normal fluids. We discuss potential experimental implications.
We examine the evolution of the Parker instability in galactic disks using 3D numerical simulations. We consider a local Cartesian box section of a galactic disk, where gas, magnetic fields and cosmic rays are all initially in a magnetohydrostatic equilibrium. This is done for different choices of initial cosmic ray density and magnetic field. The growth rates and characteristic scales obtained from the models, as well as their dependences on the density of cosmic rays and magnetic fields, are in broad agreement with previous (linearized, ideal) analytical work. However, this non-ideal instability develops a multi-modal 3D structure, which cannot be quantitatively predicted from the earlier linearized studies. This 3D signature of the instability will be of importance in interpreting observations. As a preliminary step towards such interpretations, we calculate synthetic polarized intensity and Faraday rotation measure maps, and the associated structure functions of the latter, from our simulations; these suggest that the correlation scales inferred from rotation measure maps are a possible probe for the cosmic ray content of a given galaxy. Our calculations highlight the importance of cosmic rays in these measures, making them an essential ingredient of realistic models of the interstellar medium.
In this letter we study the mean sizes of Halpha clumps in turbulent disk galaxies relative to kinematics, gas fractions, and Toomre Q. We use 100~pc resolution HST images, IFU kinematics, and gas fractions of a sample of rare, nearby turbulent disks with properties closely matched to z~1.5-2 main-sequence galaxies (the DYNAMO sample). We find linear correlations of normalized mean clump sizes with both the gas fraction and the velocity dispersion-to-rotation velocity ratio of the host galaxy. We show that these correlations are consistent with predictions derived from a model of instabilities in a self-gravitating disk (the so-called violent disk instability model). We also observe, using a two-fluid model for Q, a correlation between the size of clumps and self-gravity driven unstable regions. These results are most consistent with the hypothesis that massive star forming clumps in turbulent disks are the result of instabilities in self-gravitating gas-rich disks, and therefore provide a direct connection between resolved clump sizes and this in situ mechanism.

In this paper, we revisit the governing equations for linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities existing within a magnetized, plane-parallel, self-gravitating slab. Our approach allows for fully non-uniformly magnetized slabs, which deviate from isothermal conditions, such that the well-known Alfven and slow continuous spectra enter the description. We generalize modern MHD textbook treatments, by showing how self-gravity enters the MHD wave equation, beyond the frequently adopted Cowling approximation. This clarifies how Jeans instability generalizes from hydro to magnetohydrodynamic conditions without assuming the usual Jeans swindle approach. Our main contribution lies in reformulating the completely general governing wave equations in a number of mathematically equivalent forms, ranging from a coupled Sturm-Liouville formulation, to a Hamiltonian formulation linked to coupled harmonic oscillators, up to a convenient matrix differential form. The latter allows us to derive analytically the eigenfunctions of a magnetized, self-gravitating thin slab. In addition, as an example we give the exact closed form dispersion relations for the hydrodynamical p- and Jeans-unstable modes, with the latter demonstrating how the Cowling approximation modifies due to a proper treatment of self-gravity. The various reformulations of the MHD wave equation open up new avenues for future MHD spectral studies of instabilities as relevant for cosmic filament formation, which can e.g. use modern formal solution strategies tailored to solve coupled Sturm-Liouville or harmonic oscillator problems.
