We present a new sample of 415 bright QSOs and Seyfert~1 nuclei drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES). The sample is spectroscopically 99 % complete and well-defined in terms of flux and redshift limits. Optical magnitudes are in the interval 13 < B_J < 17.5, redshifts range within 0< z < 3.2. More than 50 % of the objects in the sample are new discoveries. We describe the selection techniques and discuss sample completeness and potential selection effects. There is no evidence for redshift-dependent variations of completeness; in particular, low-redshift QSOs - notoriously missed by other optical surveys - are abundant in this sample, since no discrimination against extended sources is imposed. For the same reason, the HES is not biased against multiply imaged QSOs due to gravitational lensing. The sample forms the largest homogeneous set of bright QSOs currently in existence, useful for a variety of statistical studies. We have redetermined the bright part of the optical quasar number-magnitude relation. We confirm that the Palomar-Green survey is significantly incomplete, but that its degree of incompleteness has recently been overestimated.

We detect angular galaxy-QSO cross-correlations between the APM Galaxy Catalogue and a preliminary release (consisting of roughly half of the anticipated final catalogue) of the Hamburg-ESO Catalogue of Bright QSOs as a function of source QSO redshift using multiple cross-correlation estimators. Each of the estimators yield very similar results, implying that the APM catalogue and the Hamburg-ESO survey are both fair samples of the respective true galaxy and QSO populations. Though the signal matches the expectations of gravitational lensing qualitatively, the strength of the measured cross-correlation signal is significantly greater than the CDM models of lensing by large scale structure would suggest. This same disagreement between models and observation has been found in several earlier studies. We estimate our confidence in the correlation detections versus redshift by generating 1000 random realizations of the Hamburg-ESO QSO survey: We detect physical associations between galaxies and low-redshift QSOs at 99% confidence and detect lensing associations at roughly 95% confidence for QSOs with redshifts between 0.6 and 1. Control cross-correlations between Galactic stars and QSOs show no signal. Finally, the overdensities (underdensities) of galaxies near QSO positions relative to those lying roughly 135 - 150 arcmin away are uncorrelated with differences in Galactic extinction between the two regions, implying that Galactic dust is not significantly affecting the QSO sample.
We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9 < B < 14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel et al. analysis of these stars was only able to derive estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of Teff, log g, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire dataset. This sample is very local - about 90% of the stars are located within 0.5 kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman & MacConnell weak-metal candidates by Beers et al. We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the suggested halo stream of stars by Helmi et al. and Chiba & Beers, as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. We also identify a relatively large number of CEMP stars with kinematics consistent with the metal-weak thick-disk population, with possible implications for its origin.
We present a measure of the power spectrum on scales from 15 to 800 Mpc/h using the ROSAT-ESO Flux-Limited X-Ray(REFLEX) galaxy cluster catalogue. The REFLEX survey provides a sample of the 452 X-ray brightest southern clusters of galaxies with the nominal flux limit S=3.0 10^{-12}erg/s/cm2 for the ROSAT energy band (0.1-2.4)keV. Several tests are performed showing no significant incompletenesses of the REFLEX clusters with X-ray luminosities brighter than 10^{43}erg/s up to scales of about 800 Mpc/h. They also indicate that cosmic variance might be more important than previous studies suggest. We regard this as a warning not to draw general cosmological conclusions from cluster samples with a size smaller than REFLEX. Power spectra, P(k), of comoving cluster number densities are estimated for flux- and volume-limited subsamples. The most important result is the detection of a broad maximum within the comoving wavenumber range 0.022<k<0.030 h/Mpc. The data suggest an increase of the power spectral amplitude with X-ray luminosity. Compared to optically selected cluster samples the REFLEX P(k)is flatter for wavenumbers k<0.05 h/Mpc thus shifting the maximum of P(k) to larger scales. The smooth maximum is not consistent with the narrow peak detected at k=0.05 h/Mpc using the Abell/ACO richness $ge 0$ data. In the range 0.02<k<0.4 h/Mpc general agreement is found between the slope of the REFLEX P(k) and those obtained with optically selected galaxies. A semi-analytic description of the biased nonlinear power spectrum in redshift space gives the best agreement for low-density Cold Dark Matter models with or without a cosmological constant.

We obtained spectra of 60 red, starlike objects (E< 18.8) identified with FIRST radio sources, S_{1.4GHz} > 1 mJy. Eight are QSOs with redshift z> 3.6.Combined with our pilot search (Benn et al 2002), our sample of 121 candidates yields a total of 18 z > 3.6 QSOs (10 of these with z > 4.0). 8% of candidates with S_{1.4GHz}< 10 mJy, and 37% of candidates with S_{1.4GHz}> 10 mJy are QSOs with z > 3.6. The surface density of E < 18.8, S_{1.4GHz} > 1mJy, z> 4 QSOs is 0.003 deg^{-2}. This is currently the only well-defined sample of radio-loud QSOs at z ~ 4 selected independently of radio spectral index. The QSOs are highly luminous in the optical (8 have M_B < -28, q_0 = 0.5, H_0 = 50 kms^{-1}Mpc^{-1}). The SEDs are as varied as those seen in optical searches for high-redshift QSOs, but the fraction of objects with weak (strongly self-absorbed) Ly alpha emission is marginally higher (3 out of 18) than for high-redshift QSOs from SDSS (5 out of 96).

For some samples, it has been shown that spectra of QSOs with low redshift are bluer during their brighter phases. For the FIRST bright QSO sample, we assemble their spectra from SDSS DR7 to investigate variability between the spectra from White et al. (2000) and from the SDSS for a long rest-frame time-lag, up to 10 years. There are 312 radio loud QSOs and 232 radio quiet QSOs in this sample, up to $z sim 3.5$. With two-epoch variation, it is found that spectra of half of the QSOs appear redder during their brighter phases. There is no obvious difference in slope variability between sub-samples of radio quiet and radio loud QSOs. This result implies that the presence of a radio jet does not affect the slope variability on 10-year timescales. The arithmetic composite difference spectrum for variable QSOs is steep at blueward of $sim$ 2500AA. The variability for the region blueward of 2500 AA is different to that for the region redward of 2500 AA.
