Electrochemical energy storage is central to modern society -- from consumer electronics to electrified transportation and the power grid. It is no longer just a convenience but a critical enabler of the transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy. The large pluralistic battery research and development community serving these needs has evolved into diverse specialties spanning materials discovery, battery chemistry, design innovation, scale-up, manufacturing and deployment. Despite the maturity and the impact of battery science and technology, the data and software practices among these disparate groups are far behind the state-of-the-art in other fields (e.g. drug discovery), which have enjoyed significant increases in the rate of innovation. Incremental performance gains and lost research productivity, which are the consequences, retard innovation and societal progress. Examples span every field of battery research , from the slow and iterative nature of materials discovery, to the repeated and time-consuming performance testing of cells and the mitigation of degradation and failures. The fundamental issue is that modern data science methods require large amounts of data and the battery community lacks the requisite scalable, standardized data hubs required for immediate use of these approaches. Lack of uniform data practices is a central barrier to the scale problem. In this perspective we identify the data- and software-sharing gaps and propose the unifying principles and tools needed to build a robust community of data hubs, which provide flexible sharing formats to address diverse needs. The Battery Data Genome is offered as a data-centric initiative that will enable the transformative acceleration of battery science and technology, and will ultimately serve as a catalyst to revolutionize our approach to innovation.

We investigate a solid-state, reversible, alkali-ion battery (AIB) capable of regulating the density of alkali atoms in a vacuum system used for the production of laser-cooled atoms. The cold-atom sample can be used with in-vacuum chronoamperometry as a diagnostic for the voltage-controlled electrochemical reaction that sources or sinks alkali atoms into the vapor. In a combined reaction-diffusion-limited regime, we show that the number of laser-cooled atoms in a magneto-optical trap can be increased both by initially loading the AIB from the vapor for longer, and by using higher voltages across the AIB when atoms are subsequently sourced back into the vapor. The time constants associated with the change in atom number in response to a change in AIB voltage are in the range of 0.5 s - 40 s. The AIB alkali reservoir is demonstrated to survive oxidization during atmospheric exposure, simplifying reservoir loading prior to vacuum implementation as a replacement for traditional resistively-heated dispensers. The AIB capabilities may provide an improved atom number stability in next-generation atomic clocks and sensors, while also facilitating fast loading and increased interrogation times.
The degradation mechanism in a sodium cell of a layered Na0.48Al0.03Co0.18Ni0.18Mn0.47O2 (NCAM) cathode with P3/P2 structure is investigated by revealing the changes in microstructure and composition upon cycling. The work aims to rationalize the gradual performance decay and the alteration of the electrochemical response in terms of polarization, voltage signature, and capacity loss. Spatial reconstructions of the electrode by X-ray computed tomography at the nanoscale supported by quantitative and qualitative analyses show fractures and deformations in the cycled layered metal-oxide particles, as well as inorganic side compounds deposited on the material. These irreversible morphological modifications reflect structural heterogeneities across the cathode particles due to formation of various domains with different Na+ intercalation degrees. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data suggest that the latter inorganic species in the cycled electrode are mainly composed of NaF, Na2O, and NaCO3 formed by parasitic electrolyte decomposition. The precipitation of these insulating compounds at the electrode/electrolyte interphase and the related structural stresses induced in the material lead to a decrease in cathode particle size and partial loss of electrochemical activity. The retention of the NCAM phase after cycling suggests that electrolyte upgrade may improve the performance of the cathode to achieve practical application for sustainable energy storage.
Power system expansion models are a widely used tool for planning powersystems, especially considering the integration of large shares of renewableresources. The backbone of these models is an optimization problem, whichdepends on a number of economic and technical parameters. Although theseparameters contain significant uncertainties, the sensitivity of power systemmodels to these uncertainties is barely investigated. In this work, we introduce a novel method to quantify the sensitivity ofpower system models to different model parameters based on measuring theadditional cost arising from misallocating generation capacities. The value ofthis method is proven by three prominent test cases: the definition of capitalcost, different weather periods and different spatial and temporal resolutions. We find that the model is most sensitive to the temporal resolution. Fur-thermore, we explain why the spatial resolution is of minor importance andwhy the underlying weather data should be chosen carefully.
We suggest an underlying mechanism that governs the growth of a network of concepts, a complex network that reflects the connections between different scientific concepts based on their co-occurrences in publications. To this end, we perform empirical analysis of a network of concepts based on the preprints in physics submitted to the arXiv.org. We calculate the network characteristics and show that they cannot follow as a result of several simple commonly used network growth models. In turn, we suggest that a simultaneous account of two factors, i.e., growth by blocks and preferential selection, gives an explanation of empirically observed properties of the concepts network. Moreover, the observed structure emerges as a synergistic effect of these both factors: each of them alone does not lead to a satisfactory picture.
Significant progress has been made in answering fundamental questions about how and, more importantly, on what time scales interactions between electrons, spins, and phonons occur in solid state materials. These complex interactions are leading to the first real applications of terahertz (THz) spintronics: THz emitters that can compete with traditional THz sources and provide additional functionalities enabled by the spin degree of freedom. This tutorial article is intended to provide the background necessary to understand, use, and improve THz spintronic emitters. A particular focus is the introduction of the physical effects that underlie the operation of spintronic THz emitters. These effects were, for the most part, first discovered through traditional spin-transport and spintronic studies. We therefore begin with a review of the historical background and current theoretical understanding of ultrafast spin physics that has been developed over the past twenty-five years. We then discuss standard experimental techniques for the characterization of spintronic THz emitters and - more broadly - ultrafast magnetic phenomena. We next present the principles and methods of the synthesis and fabrication of various types of spintronic THz emitters. Finally, we review recent developments in this exciting field including the integration of novel material platforms such as topological insulators as well as antiferromagnets and materials with unconventional spin textures.
