In this paper, an analytical framework for evaluating the performance of scalable cell-free massive MIMO (SCF-mMIMO) systems in which all user equipments (UEs) and access points (APs) employ finite resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and operates under correlated Rician fading, is presented. By using maximal-ratio combining (MRC) detection, generic expressions for the uplink (UL) spectral efficiency (SE) for both distributed and centralized schemes are derived. In order to further reduce the computational complexity (CC) of the original local partial MMSE (LP-MMSE) and partial MMSE (P-MMSE) detectors, two novel scalable low complexity MMSE detectors are proposed for distributed and centralized schemes respectively, which achieves very similar SE performance. Furthermore, for the distributed scheme a novel partial large-scale fading decoding (P-LSFD) weighting vector is introduced and its analytical SE performance is very similar to the performance of an equivalent unscalable LSFD vector. Finally, a scalable algorithm jointly consisting of AP cluster formation, pilot assignment, and power control is proposed, which outperforms the conventional random pilot assignment and user-group based pilot assignment policies and, contrary to an equal power transmit strategy, it guarantees quality of service (QoS) fairness for all accessing UEs.

This paper considers uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with lowresolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) over Rician fading channels. Maximum-ratio-combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers are considered under the assumption of perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Low-resolution ADCs are considered for both data detection and channel estimation, and the resulting performance is analyzed. Asymptotic approximations of the spectrum efficiency (SE) for large systems are derived based on random matrix theory. With these results, we can provide insights into the trade-offs between the SE and the ADC resolution and study the influence of the Rician K-factors on the performance. It is shown that a large value of K-factors may lead to better performance and alleviate the influence of quantization noise on channel estimation. Moreover, we investigate the power scaling laws for both receivers under imperfect CSI and it shows that when the number of base station (BS) antennas is very large, without loss of SE performance, the transmission power can be scaled by the number of BS antennas for both receivers while the overall performance is limited by the resolution of ADCs. The asymptotic analysis is validated by numerical results. Besides, it is also shown that the SE gap between the two receivers is narrowed down when the K-factor is increased. We also show that ADCs with moderate resolutions lead to better energy efficiency (EE) than that with high-resolution or extremely low-resolution ADCs and using ZF receivers achieve higher EE as compared with the MRC receivers.
This letter presents and analyzes orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based multi-carrier transmission for cell-free massive multi-input multi-output (CFmMIMO) over frequency-selective fading channels. Frequency-domain conjugate beamforming, pilot assignment, and user-specific resource allocation are proposed. CFmMIMO-OFDM is scalable to serve a massive number of users and is flexible to offer diverse data rates for heterogeneous applications.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of channel aging on the performance of cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with both spatial correlation and pilot contamination. We derive novel closed-form uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions that take imperfect channel estimation into account. More specifically, we consider large-scale fading decoding and matched-filter receiver cooperation in the uplink. The uplink performance of a small-cell (SC) system is derived for comparison. The CF massive MIMO system achieves higher 95%-likely uplink SE than the SC system. In the downlink, the coherent transmission has four times higher 95%-likely per-user SE than the non-coherent transmission. Statistical channel cooperation power control (SCCPC) is used to mitigate the inter-user interference. SCCPC performs better than full power transmission, but the benefits are gradually weakened as the channel aging becomes stronger. Furthermore, strong spatial correlation reduces the SE but degrades the effect of channel aging. Increasing the number of antennas can improve the SE while decreasing the energy efficiency. Finally, we use the maximum normalized Doppler shift to design the SE-improved length of the resource block. Simulation results are presented to validate the accuracy of our expressions and prove that the CF massive MIMO system is more robust to channel aging than the SC system.
We study the uplink performance of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) when users are equipped with multiple antennas. To this end, we consider a generalized channel model that accounts for line-of-sight propagation and spatially correlated multipath fading. Most importantly, we employ the Weichselberger correlation model, which has been shown to alleviate the deficiencies of the popular Kronecker model. The main contribution of this paper is a rigorous closed-form expression for the uplink spectral efficiency using maximum-ratio combining and minimum mean square error channel estimation. Our result is a non-trivial generalization of previous results on massive MIMO with spatially correlated channels, thereby enabling us to have suitable designs for future massive MIMO systems. Numerical simulations corroborate our analysis and provide useful insights on how different propagation conditions affect system performance.
This paper considers a multipair amplify-and-forward massive MIMO relaying system with one-bit ADCs and one-bit DACs at the relay. The channel state information is estimated via pilot training, and then utilized by the relay to perform simple maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission processing. Leveraging on the Bussgang decomposition, an exact achievable rate is derived for the system with correlated quantization noise. Based on this, a closed-form asymptotic approximation for the achievable rate is presented, thereby enabling efficient evaluation of the impact of key parameters on the system performance. Furthermore, power scaling laws are characterized to study the potential energy efficiency associated with deploying massive one-bit antenna arrays at the relay. In addition, a power allocation strategy is designed to compensate for the rate degradation caused by the coarse quantization. Our results suggest that the quality of the channel estimates depends on the specific orthogonal pilot sequences that are used, contrary to unquantized systems where any set of orthogonal pilot sequences gives the same result. Moreover, the sum rate gap between the double-quantized relay system and an ideal non-quantized system is a moderate factor of $4/pi^2$ in the low power regime.
