The symmetry-indicators provide valuable information about the topological properties of band structures in real materials. For inversion-symmetric, non-magnetic materials, the pattern of parity eigenvalues of various Kramers-degenerate bands at the time-reversal-invariant momentum points are generally analyzed with the combination of strong $Z_4$, and weak $Z_2$ indices. Can the symmetry indicators identify the tunneling configurations of SU(2) Berry connections or the three-dimensional, winding numbers of topologically non-trivial bands? In this work, we perform detailed analytical and numerical calculations on various effective tight-binding models to answer this question. If the parity eigenvalues are regarded as fictitious Ising spins, located at the vertices of Miller hypercube, the strong $Z_4$ index describes the net ferro-magnetic moment, which is shown to be inadequate for identifying non-trivial bands, supporting even integer winding numbers. We demonstrate that an anti-ferromagnetic index, measuring the staggered magnetization can distinguish between bands possessing zero, odd, and even integer winding numbers. The coarse-grained analysis of symmetry-indicators is substantiated by computing the change in rotational-symmetry-protected, quantized Berry flux and Wilson loops along various high-symmetry axes. By simultaneously computing ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic indices, we categorize various bands of bismuth, antimony, rhombohedral phosphorus, and Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

The synthesis of new materials with novel or useful properties is one of the most important drivers in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science. Discoveries of this kind are especially significant when they point to promising future basic research and applications. Van der Waals bonded materials comprised of lower-dimensional building blocks have been shown to exhibit emergent properties when isolated in an atomically thin form1-8. Here, we report the discovery of a transition metal chalcogenide in a heretofore unknown segmented linear chain form, where basic building blocks each consisting of two hafnium atoms and nine tellurium atoms (Hf2Te9) are van der Waals bonded end-to-end. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory reveal striking crystal-symmetry-related features in the electronic structure of the segmented chain, including giant spin splitting and nontrivial topological phases of selected energy band states. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals single segmented Hf2Te9 chains isolated within the hollow cores of carbon nanotubes, with a structure consistent with theoretical predictions. Van der Waals-bonded segmented linear chain transition metal chalcogenide materials could open up new opportunities in low-dimensional, gate-tunable, magnetic and topological crystalline systems.
We investigate how the multiple bands of fermions on a crystal lattice evolve if a magnetic field is added which does not increase the number of bands. The kagome lattice is studied as generic example for a lattice with loops of three bonds. Finite Chern numbers occur as non-trivial topological property in presence of the magnetic field. The symmetries and periodicities as function of the applied field are discussed. Strikingly, the dispersions of the edge states depend crucially on the precise shape of the boundary. This suggests that suitable design of the boundaries helps to tune physical properties which may even differ between upper and lower edge. Moreover, we suggest a promising gauge to realize this model in optical lattices.
Dirac states hosted by Sb/Bi square nets are known to exist in the layered antiferromagnetic AMnX$_2$ (A = Ca/Sr/Ba/Eu/Yb, X=Sb/Bi) material family the space group to be P4/nmm or I4/mmm. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of quantum transport behaviors, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first-principles calculations on SrZnSb2, a nonmagnetic analogue to AMnX2, which crystallizes in the pnma space group with distorted square nets. From the quantum oscillation measurements up to 35 T, three major frequencies including F$_1$ = 103 T, F$_2$ = 127 T and F$_3$ = 160 T, are identified. The effective masses of the quasiparticles associated with these frequencies are extracted, namely, m*$_1$ = 0.1 m$_e$, m*$_2$ = 0.1 m$_e$ and m*$_3$ = 0.09m$_e$, where m$_e$ is the free electron mass. From the three-band Lifshitz-Kosevich fit, the Berry phases accumulated along the cyclotron orbit of the quasiparticles are 0.06$pi$, 1.2$pi$ and 0.74$pi$ for F$_1$, F$_2$ and F$_3$, respectively. Combined with the ARPES data and the first-principles calculations, we reveal that F2 and F3 are associated with the two nontrivial Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone edge while F1 is associated with the trivial Fermi pocket at the zone center. In addition, the first-principles calculations further suggest the existence of Dirac nodal line in the band structure of SrZnSb$_2$.

We report a detailed magneto-transport study in single crystals of NbP. High quality crystals were grown by vapour transport method. An exceptionally large magnetoresistance is confirmed at low temperature which is non-saturating and is linear at high fields. Models explaining the linear magnetoresistance are discussed and it is argued that in NbP this is linked to charge carrier mobility fluctuations. Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance is not seen, unlike several other Weyl monopnictides, suggesting lack of well defined chiral anomaly in NbP. Unambiguous Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations are observed at low temperatures that are correlated to Berry phases. The Landau fan diagram indicates trivial Berry phase in NbP crystals corresponding to Fermi surface extrema at 30.5 Tesla.
