Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have been used in many image processing tasks. However, they still have serious problems maintaining the balance between conditioning the output on the input and creating the output with the desired distribution based on the corresponding ground truth. The traditional cGANs, similar to most conventional GANs, suffer from vanishing gradients, which backpropagate from the discriminator to the generator. Moreover, the traditional cGANs are sensitive to architectural changes due to previously mentioned gradient problems. Therefore, balancing the architecture of the cGANs is almost impossible. Recently MSG-GAN has been proposed to stabilize the performance of the GANs by applying multiple connections between the generator and discriminator. In this work, we propose a method called MSGDD-cGAN, which first stabilizes the performance of the cGANs using multi-connections gradients flow. Secondly, the proposed network architecture balances the correlation of the output to input and the fitness of the output on the target distribution. This balance is generated by using the proposed dual discrimination procedure. We tested our model by segmentation of fetal ultrasound images. Our model shows a 3.18% increase in the F1 score comparing to the pix2pix version of cGANs.
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been a popular deep generative model for real-world applications. Despite many recent efforts on GANs that have been contributed, mode collapse and instability of GANs are still open problems caused by their adversarial optimization difficulties. In this paper, motivated by the cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm, we propose a Cooperative Dual Evolution based Generative Adversarial Network (CDE-GAN) to circumvent these drawbacks. In essence, CDE-GAN incorporates dual evolution with respect to the generator(s) and discriminators into a unified evolutionary adversarial framework to conduct effective adversarial multi-objective optimization. Thus it exploits the complementary properties and injects dual mutation diversity into training to steadily diversify the estimated density in capturing multi-modes and improve generative performance. Specifically, CDE-GAN decomposes the complex adversarial optimization problem into two subproblems (generation and discrimination), and each subproblem is solved with a separated subpopulation (E-Generator} and E-Discriminators), evolved by its own evolutionary algorithm. Additionally, we further propose a Soft Mechanism to balance the trade-off between E-Generators and E-Discriminators to conduct steady training for CDE-GAN. Extensive experiments on one synthetic dataset and three real-world benchmark image datasets demonstrate that the proposed CDE-GAN achieves a competitive and superior performance in generating good quality and diverse samples over baselines. In this paper, we explore the task of generating photo-realistic face images from lines. Previous methods based on conditional generative adversarial networks (cGANs) have shown their power to generate visually plausible images when a conditional image and an output image share well-aligned structures. However, these models fail to synthesize face images with a whole set of well-defined structures, e.g. eyes, noses, mouths, etc., especially when the conditional line map lacks one or several parts. To address this problem, we propose a conditional self-attention generative adversarial network (CSAGAN). We introduce a conditional self-attention mechanism to cGANs to capture long-range dependencies between different regions in faces. We also build a multi-scale discriminator. The large-scale discriminator enforces the completeness of global structures and the small-scale discriminator encourages fine details, thereby enhancing the realism of generated face images. We evaluate the proposed model on the CelebA-HD dataset by two perceptual user studies and three quantitative metrics. The experiment results demonstrate that our method generates high-quality facial images while preserving facial structures. Our results outperform state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for generating an object image from text attributes on a desired location, when the base image is given. One step further to the existing studies on text-to-image generation mainly focusing on the objects appearance, the proposed method aims to generate an object image preserving the given background information, which is the first attempt in this field. To tackle the problem, we propose a multi-conditional GAN (MC-GAN) which controls both the object and background information jointly. As a core component of MC-GAN, we propose a synthesis block which disentangles the object and background information in the training stage. This block enables MC-GAN to generate a realistic object image with the desired background by controlling the amount of the background information from the given base image using the foreground information from the text attributes. From the experiments with Caltech-200 bird and Oxford-102 flower datasets, we show that our model is able to generate photo-realistic images with a resolution of 128 x 128. The source code of MC-GAN is released.
The Deep Neural Networks are vulnerable toadversarial exam-ples(Figure 1), making the DNNs-based systems collapsed byadding the inconspicuous perturbations to the images. Most of the existing works for adversarial attack are gradient-based and suf-fer from the latency efficiencies and the load on GPU memory. Thegenerative-based adversarial attacks can get rid of this limitation, and some relative works propose the approaches based on GAN.However, suffering from the difficulty of the convergence of train-ing a GAN, the adversarial examples have either bad attack abilityor bad visual quality. In this work, we find that the discriminatorcould be not necessary for generative-based adversarial attack, andpropose theSymmetric Saliency-based Auto-Encoder (SSAE)to generate the perturbations, which is composed of the saliencymap module and the angle-norm disentanglement of the featuresmodule. The advantage of our proposed method lies in that it is notdepending on discriminator, and uses the generative saliency map to pay more attention to label-relevant regions. The extensive exper-iments among the various tasks, datasets, and models demonstratethat the adversarial examples generated by SSAE not only make thewidely-used models collapse, but also achieves good visual quality. The code is available at https://github.com/BravoLu/SSAE.
In remote sensing images, the existence of the thin cloud is an inevitable and ubiquitous phenomenon that crucially reduces the quality of imageries and limits the scenarios of application. Therefore, thin cloud removal is an indispensable procedure to enhance the utilization of remote sensing images. Generally, even though contaminated by thin clouds, the pixels still retain more or less surface information. Hence, different from thick cloud removal, thin cloud removal algorithms normally concentrate on inhibiting the cloud influence rather than substituting the cloud-contaminated pixels. Meanwhile, considering the surface features obscured by the cloud are usually similar to adjacent areas, the dependency between each pixel of the input is useful to reconstruct contaminated areas. In this paper, to make full use of the dependencies between pixels of the image, we propose a Multi-Head Linear Attention Generative Adversarial Network (MLAGAN) for Thin Cloud Removal. The MLA-GAN is based on the encoding-decoding framework consisting of multiple attention-based layers and deconvolutional layers. Compared with six deep learning-based thin cloud removal benchmarks, the experimental results on the RICE1 and RICE2 datasets demonstrate that the proposed framework MLA-GAN has dominant advantages in thin cloud removal.
