No Arabic abstract
The new era of technology has brought us to the point where it is convenient for people to share their opinions over an abundance of platforms. These platforms have a provision for the users to express themselves in multiple forms of representations, including text, images, videos, and audio. This, however, makes it difficult for users to obtain all the key information about a topic, making the task of automatic multi-modal summarization (MMS) essential. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the existing research in the area of MMS.
Emotion represents an essential aspect of human speech that is manifested in speech prosody. Speech, visual, and textual cues are complementary in human communication. In this paper, we study a hybrid fusion method, referred to as multi-modal attention network (MMAN) to make use of visual and textual cues in speech emotion recognition. We propose a novel multi-modal attention mechanism, cLSTM-MMA, which facilitates the attention across three modalities and selectively fuse the information. cLSTM-MMA is fused with other uni-modal sub-networks in the late fusion. The experiments show that speech emotion recognition benefits significantly from visual and textual cues, and the proposed cLSTM-MMA alone is as competitive as other fusion methods in terms of accuracy, but with a much more compact network structure. The proposed hybrid network MMAN achieves state-of-the-art performance on IEMOCAP database for emotion recognition.
In this paper, we aim to advance the research of multi-modal pre-training on E-commerce and subsequently contribute a large-scale dataset, named M5Product, which consists of over 6 million multimodal pairs, covering more than 6,000 categories and 5,000 attributes. Generally, existing multi-modal datasets are either limited in scale or modality diversity. Differently, our M5Product is featured from the following aspects. First, the M5Product dataset is 500 times larger than the public multimodal dataset with the same number of modalities and nearly twice larger compared with the largest available text-image cross-modal dataset. Second, the dataset contains rich information of multiple modalities including image, text, table, video and audio, in which each modality can capture different views of semantic information (e.g. category, attributes, affordance, brand, preference) and complements the other. Third, to better accommodate with real-world problems, a few portion of M5Product contains incomplete modality pairs and noises while having the long-tailed distribution, which aligns well with real-world scenarios. Finally, we provide a baseline model M5-MMT that makes the first attempt to integrate the different modality configuration into an unified model for feature fusion to address the great challenge for semantic alignment. We also evaluate various multi-model pre-training state-of-the-arts for benchmarking their capabilities in learning from unlabeled data under the different number of modalities on the M5Product dataset. We conduct extensive experiments on four downstream tasks and provide some interesting findings on these modalities. Community Question Answering (CQA) forums such as Stack Overflow and Yahoo! Answers contain a rich resource of answers to a wide range of questions. Each question thread can receive a large number of answers with different perspectives. The goal of multi-perspective answer summarization is to produce a summary that includes all perspectives of the answer. A major obstacle for multi-perspective, abstractive answer summarization is the absence of a dataset to provide supervision for producing such summaries. This work introduces a novel dataset creation method to automatically create multi-perspective, bullet-point abstractive summaries from an existing CQA forum. Supervision provided by this dataset trains models to inherently produce multi-perspective summaries. Additionally, to train models to output more diverse, faithful answer summaries while retaining multiple perspectives, we propose a multi-reward optimization technique coupled with a sentence-relevance prediction multi-task loss. Our methods demonstrate improved coverage of perspectives and faithfulness as measured by automatic and human evaluations compared to a strong baseline.
Incorporating multi-modal contexts in conversation is an important step for developing more engaging dialogue systems. In this work, we explore this direction by introducing MMChat: a large scale multi-modal dialogue corpus (32.4M raw dialogues and 120.84K filtered dialogues). Unlike previous corpora that are crowd-sourced or collected from fictitious movies, MMChat contains image-grounded dialogues collected from real conversations on social media, in which the sparsity issue is observed. Specifically, image-initiated dialogues in common communications may deviate to some non-image-grounded topics as the conversation proceeds. We develop a benchmark model to address this issue in dialogue generation tasks by adapting the attention routing mechanism on image features. Experiments demonstrate the usefulness of incorporating image features and the effectiveness in handling the sparsity of image features.
Speaker extraction algorithm relies on the speech sample from the target speaker as the reference point to focus its attention. Such a reference speech is typically pre-recorded. On the other hand, the temporal synchronization between speech and lip movement also serves as an informative cue. Motivated by this idea, we study a novel technique to use speech-lip visual cues to extract reference target speech directly from mixture speech during inference time, without the need of pre-recorded reference speech. We propose a multi-modal speaker extraction network, named MuSE, that is conditioned only on a lip image sequence. MuSE not only outperforms other competitive baselines in terms of SI-SDR and PESQ, but also shows consistent improvement in cross-dataset evaluations.
