Millimeter wave (mmWave) signals are useful for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), due to their inherent geometric connection to the propagation environment and the propagation channel. To solve the SLAM problem, existing approaches rely on sigma-point or particle-based approximations, leading to high computational complexity, precluding real-time execution. We propose a novel low-complexity SLAM filter, based on the Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) filter. It utilizes the extended Kalman (EK) first-order Taylor series based Gaussian approximation of the filtering distribution, and applies the track-oriented marginal multi-Bernoulli/Poisson (TOMB/P) algorithm to approximate the resulting PMBM as a Poisson multi-Bernoulli (PMB). The filter can account for different landmark types in radio SLAM and multiple data association hypotheses. Hence, it has an adjustable complexity/performance trade-off. Simulation results show that the developed SLAM filter can greatly reduce the computational cost, while it keeps the good performance of mapping and user state estimation.

Future cellular networks that utilize millimeter wave signals provide new opportunities in positioning and situational awareness. Large bandwidths combined with large antenna arrays provide unparalleled delay and angle resolution, allowing high accuracy localization but also building up a map of the environment. Even the most basic filter intended for simultaneous localization and mapping exhibits high computational overhead since the methods rely on sigma point or particle-based approximations. In this paper, a first order Taylor series based Gaussian approximation of the filtering distribution is used and it is demonstrated that the developed extended Kalman probability hypothesis density filter is computationally very efficient. In addition, the results imply that efficiency does not come with the expense of estimation accuracy since the method nearly achieves the position error bound.
We design a lightweight beam-searching algorithm for mobile millimeter-wave systems. We construct and maintain a set of path skeletons, i.e., potential paths between a user and the serving base station to substantially expedite the beam-searching process. To exploit the spatial correlations of the channels, we propose an efficient algorithm that measures the similarity of the skeletons and re-executes the beam-searching procedure only when the old one becomes obsolete. We identify and optimize several tradeoffs between: i) the beam-searching overhead and the instantaneous rate of the users, and ii) the number of users and the update overhead of the path skeletons. Simulation results in an outdoor environment with real building map data show that the proposed method can significantly improve the performance of beam-searching in terms of latency, energy consumption and achievable throughout.
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a critical task for autonomous navigation. However, due to the computational complexity of SLAM algorithms, it is very difficult to achieve real-time implementation on low-power platforms. We propose an energy efficient architecture for real-time ORB (Oriented-FAST and Rotated- BRIEF) based visual SLAM system by accelerating the most time consuming stages of feature extraction and matching on FPGA platform. Moreover, the original ORB descriptor pattern is reformed as a rotational symmetric manner which is much more hardware friendly. Optimizations including rescheduling and parallelizing are further utilized to improve the throughput and reduce the memory footprint. Compared with Intel i7 and ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs on TUM dataset, our FPGA realization achieves up to 3X and 31X frame rate improvement, as well as up to 71X and 25X energy efficiency improvement, respectively.
With the recent advance of deep learning based object recognition and estimation, it is possible to consider object level SLAM where the pose of each object is estimated in the SLAM process. In this paper, based on a novel Lie group structure, a right invariant extended Kalman filter (RI-EKF) for object based SLAM is proposed. The observability analysis shows that the proposed algorithm automatically maintains the correct unobservable subspace, while standard EKF (Std-EKF) based SLAM algorithm does not. This results in a better consistency for the proposed algorithm comparing to Std-EKF. Finally, simulations and real world experiments validate not only the consistency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm, but also the practicability of the proposed RI-EKF for object based SLAM problem. The MATLAB code of the algorithm is made publicly available.

The bistatic backscatter architecture, with its extended range, enables flexible deployment opportunities for backscatter devices. In this paper, we study the placement of power beacons (PBs) in bistatic backscatter networks to maximize the guaranteed coverage distance (GCD), defined as the distance from the reader within which backscatter devices are able to satisfy a given quality-of-service constraint. This work departs from conventional energy source placement problems by considering the performance of the additional backscatter link on top of the energy transfer link. We adopt and optimize a symmetric PB placement scheme to maximize the GCD. The optimal PB placement under this scheme is obtained using either analytically tractable expressions or an efficient algorithm. Numerical results provide useful insights into the impacts of various system parameters on the PB placement and the resulting GCD, plus the advantages of the adopted symmetric placement scheme over other benchmark schemes.
