Active wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) based on simultaneous magnetic actuation and localization (SMAL) techniques holds great promise for improving diagnostic accuracy, reducing examination time and relieving operator burden. To date, the rotating magnetic actuation methods have been constrained to use a continuously rotating permanent magnet. In this paper, we first propose the reciprocally rotating magnetic actuation (RRMA) approach for active WCE to enhance patient safety. We first show how to generate a desired reciprocally rotating magnetic field for capsule actuation, and provide a theoretical analysis of the potential risk of causing volvulus due to the capsule motion. Then, an RRMA-based SMAL workflow is presented to automatically propel a capsule in an unknown tubular environment. We validate the effectiveness of our method in real-world experiments to automatically propel a robotic capsule in an ex-vivo pig colon. The experiment results show that our approach can achieve efficient and robust propulsion of the capsule with an average moving speed of $2.48 mm/s$ in the pig colon, and demonstrate the potential of using RRMA to enhance patient safety, reduce the inspection time, and improve the clinical acceptance of this technology.

Simultaneous Magnetic Actuation and Localization (SMAL) is a promising technology for active wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). In this paper, an adaptive SMAL system is presented to efficiently propel and precisely locate a capsule in a tubular environment with complex shapes. In order to track the capsule with high localization accuracy and update frequency in a large workspace, we propose a mechanism that can automatically activate a sub-array of sensors with the optimal layout during the capsule movement. The improved multiple objects tracking (IMOT) method is simplified and adapted to our system to estimate the 6-D pose of the capsule in real time. Also, we study the locomotion of a magnetically actuated capsule in a tubular environment, and formulate a method to adaptively adjust the pose of the actuator to improve the propulsion efficiency. Our presented methods are applicable to other permanent magnet-based SMAL systems, and help to improve the actuation efficiency of active WCE. We verify the effectiveness of our proposed system in extensive experiments on phantoms and ex-vivo animal organs. The results demonstrate that our system can achieve convincing performance compared with the state-of-the-art ones in terms of actuation efficiency, workspace size, robustness, localization accuracy and update frequency.
Ultrasound (US) imaging is widely employed for diagnosis and staging of peripheral vascular diseases (PVD), mainly due to its high availability and the fact it does not emit radiation. However, high inter-operator variability and a lack of repeatability of US image acquisition hinder the implementation of extensive screening programs. To address this challenge, we propose an end-to-end workflow for automatic robotic US screening of tubular structures using only the real-time US imaging feedback. We first train a U-Net for real-time segmentation of the vascular structure from cross-sectional US images. Then, we represent the detected vascular structure as a 3D point cloud and use it to estimate the longitudinal axis of the target tubular structure and its mean radius by solving a constrained non-linear optimization problem. Iterating the previous processes, the US probe is automatically aligned to the orientation normal to the target tubular tissue and adjusted online to center the tracked tissue based on the spatial calibration. The real-time segmentation result is evaluated both on a phantom and in-vivo on brachial arteries of volunteers. In addition, the whole process is validated both in simulation and physical phantoms. The mean absolute radius error and orientation error ($pm$ SD) in the simulation are $1.16pm0.1~mm$ and $2.7pm3.3^{circ}$, respectively. On a gel phantom, these errors are $1.95pm2.02~mm$ and $3.3pm2.4^{circ}$. This shows that the method is able to automatically screen tubular tissues with an optimal probe orientation (i.e. normal to the vessel) and at the same to accurately estimate the mean radius, both in real-time.
This paper presents an algorithmic framework for the distributed on-line source seeking, termed as DoSS, with a multi-robot system in an unknown dynamical environment. Our algorithm, building on a novel concept called dummy confidence upper bound (D-UCB), integrates both estimation of the unknown environment and task planning for the multiple robots simultaneously, and as a result, drives the team of robots to a steady state in which multiple sources of interest are located. Unlike the standard UCB algorithm in the context of multi-armed bandits, the introduction of D-UCB significantly reduces the computational complexity in solving subproblems of the multi-robot task planning. This also enables our DoSS algorithm to be implementable in a distributed on-line manner. The performance of the algorithm is theoretically guaranteed by showing a sub-linear upper bound of the cumulative regret. Numerical results on a real-world methane emission seeking problem are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Hybrid ground and aerial vehicles can possess distinct advantages over ground-only or flight-only designs in terms of energy savings and increased mobility. In this work we outline our unified framework for controls, planning, and autonomy of hybrid ground/air vehicles. Our contribution is three-fold: 1) We develop a control scheme for the control of passive two-wheeled hybrid ground/aerial vehicles. 2) We present a unified planner for both rolling and flying by leveraging differential flatness mappings. 3) We conduct experiments leveraging mapping and global planning for hybrid mobility in unknown environments, showing that hybrid mobility uses up to five times less energy than flying only.

Navigation applications relying on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) are limited in indoor environments and GNSS-denied outdoor terrains such as dense urban or forests. In this paper, we present a novel accurate, robust and low-cost GNSS-independent navigation system, which is composed of a monocular camera and Ultra-wideband (UWB) transceivers. Visual techniques have gained excellent results when computing the incremental motion of the sensor, and UWB methods have proved to provide promising localization accuracy due to the high time resolution of the UWB ranging signals. However, the monocular visual techniques with scale ambiguity are not suitable for applications requiring metric results, and UWB methods assume that the positions of the UWB transceiver anchor are pre-calibrated and known, thus precluding their application in unknown and challenging environments. To this end, we advocate leveraging the monocular camera and UWB to create a map of visual features and UWB anchors. We propose a visual-UWB Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm which tightly combines visual and UWB measurements to form a joint non-linear optimization problem on Lie-Manifold. The 6 Degrees of Freedom (DoF) state of the vehicles and the map are estimated by minimizing the UWB ranging errors and landmark reprojection errors. Our navigation system starts with an exploratory task which performs the real-time visual-UWB SLAM to obtain the global map, then the navigation task by reusing this global map. The tasks can be performed by different vehicles in terms of equipped sensors and payload capability in a heterogeneous team. We validate our system on the public datasets, achieving typical centimeter accuracy and 0.1% scale error.
