Text normalization (TN) and inverse text normalization (ITN) are essential preprocessing and postprocessing steps for text-to-speech synthesis and automatic speech recognition, respectively. Many methods have been proposed for either TN or ITN, ranging from weighted finite-state transducers to neural networks. Despite their impressive performance, these methods aim to tackle only one of the two tasks but not both. As a result, in a complete spoken dialog system, two separate models for TN and ITN need to be built. This heterogeneity increases the technical complexity of the system, which in turn increases the cost of maintenance in a production setting. Motivated by this observation, we propose a unified framework for building a single neural duplex system that can simultaneously handle TN and ITN. Combined with a simple but effective data augmentation method, our systems achieve state-of-the-art results on the Google TN dataset for English and Russian. They can also reach over 95% sentence-level accuracy on an internal English TN dataset without any additional fine-tuning. In addition, we also create a cleaned dataset from the Spoken Wikipedia Corpora for German and report the performance of our systems on the dataset. Overall, experimental results demonstrate the proposed duplex text normalization framework is highly effective and applicable to a range of domains and languages

We review the task of Sentence Pair Scoring, popular in the literature in various forms - viewed as Answer Sentence Selection, Semantic Text Scoring, Next Utterance Ranking, Recognizing Textual Entailment, Paraphrasing or e.g. a component of Memory Networks. We argue that all such tasks are similar from the model perspective and propose new baselines by comparing the performance of common IR metrics and popular convolutional, recurrent and attention-based neural models across many Sentence Pair Scoring tasks and datasets. We discuss the problem of evaluating randomized models, propose a statistically grounded methodology, and attempt to improve comparisons by releasing new datasets that are much harder than some of the currently used well explored benchmarks. We introduce a unified open source software framework with easily pluggable models and tasks, which enables us to experiment with multi-task reusability of trained sentence model. We set a new state-of-art in performance on the Ubuntu Dialogue dataset.

As a promising paradigm, interactive semantic parsing has shown to improve both semantic parsing accuracy and user confidence in the results. In this paper, we propose a new, unified formulation of the interactive semantic parsing problem, where the goal is to design a model-based intelligent agent. The agent maintains its own state as the current predicted semantic parse, decides whether and where human intervention is needed, and generates a clarification question in natural language. A key part of the agent is a world model: it takes a percept (either an initial question or subsequent feedback from the user) and transitions to a new state. We then propose a simple yet remarkably effective instantiation of our framework, demonstrated on two text-to-SQL datasets (WikiSQL and Spider) with different state-of-the-art base semantic parsers. Compared to an existing interactive semantic parsing approach that treats the base parser as a black box, our approach solicits less user feedback but yields higher run-time accuracy.

Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) aims to identify the aspect terms, their corresponding sentiment polarities, and the opinion terms. There exist seven subtasks in ABSA. Most studies only focus on the subsets of these subtasks, which leads to various complicated ABSA models while hard to solve these subtasks in a unified framework. In this paper, we redefine every subtask target as a sequence mixed by pointer indexes and sentiment class indexes, which converts all ABSA subtasks into a unified generative formulation. Based on the unified formulation, we exploit the pre-training sequence-to-sequence model BART to solve all ABSA subtasks in an end-to-end framework. Extensive experiments on four ABSA datasets for seven subtasks demonstrate that our framework achieves substantial performance gain and provides a real unified end-to-end solution for the whole ABSA subtasks, which could benefit multiple tasks.
Its natural these days for people to know the local events from massive documents. Many texts contain location information, such as city name or road name, which is always incomplete or latent. Its significant to extract the administrative area of the text and organize the hierarchy of area, called location normalization. Existing detecting location systems either exclude hierarchical normalization or present only a few specific regions. We propose a system named ROIBase that normalizes the text by the Chinese hierarchical administrative divisions. ROIBase adopts a co-occurrence constraint as the basic framework to score the hit of the administrative area, achieves the inference by special embeddings, and expands the recall by the ROI (region of interest). It has high efficiency and interpretability because it mainly establishes on the definite knowledge and has less complex logic than the supervised models. We demonstrate that ROIBase achieves better performance against feasible solutions and is useful as a strong support system for location normalization.
Pruning is an effective method to reduce the memory footprint and computational cost associated with large natural language processing models. However, current approaches either only explore head pruning, which has a limited pruning ratio, or only focus on unstructured pruning, which has negligible effects on the real inference time and/or power consumption. To address these challenges, we develop a novel MultiLevel structured Pruning (MLPruning) framework, which uses three different levels of structured pruning: head pruning, row pruning, and block-wise sparse pruning. We propose using a learnable Top-k threshold, which employs an adaptive regularization to adjust the regularization magnitude adaptively, to select appropriate pruning ratios for different weight matrices. We also propose a two-step pipeline to combine block-wise pruning with head/row pruning to achieve high structured pruning ratios with minimum accuracy degradation. Our empirical results show that for bertbase, with textapprox20% of remaining weights, OURS can achieve an accuracy that is comparable to the full model on QQP/MNLI/squad, with up to textapprox3.69x speedup. Our framework has been open sourced~cite{codebase}.
