This paper addresses robust beamforming design for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA)-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) visible light communication (VLC) networks. In particular, since the channel capacity of VLC is yet unknown, we derive the first theoretical bound of channel capacity of RSMA-aided VLC networks, i.e., achievable rates with closed-form expressions. For the perfect channel state information (CSI) scenario, we investigate the beamforming design to minimize the transmitted power of RSMA-aided VLC networks under the quality of service (QoS) constraint of each user and the optical power constraints, and propose a constrained-convex-concave programming (CCCP)-based beamforming design algorithm to obtain high-quality beamformers. Moreover, for the imperfect CSI scenario, we propose a robust CCCP-based beamforming design scheme for RSMA-aided VLC networks by exploiting semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique and S-lemma. Numerical results show that the proposed RSMA schemes offer a significant spectral efficiency gain over the existing space-division multiple access (SDMA) scheme and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme.

Energy-efficient design and secure communications are of crucial importance in wireless communication networks. However, the energy efficiency achieved by using physical layer security can be limited by the channel conditions. In order to tackle this problem, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple input single output (MISO) network with independent cooperative jamming is studied. The energy efficiency is maximized by jointly designing the transmit and jamming beamforming and IRS phase-shift matrix under both the perfect channel state information (CSI) and the imperfect CSI. In order to tackle the challenging non-convex fractional problems, an algorithm based on semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation is proposed for solving energy efficiency maximization problem under the perfect CSI case while an alternate optimization algorithm based on $mathcal{S}$-procedure is used for solving the problem under the imperfect CSI case. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design outperforms the benchmark schemes in term of energy efficiency. Moreover, the tradeoff between energy efficiency and the secrecy rate is found in the IRS-assisted MISO network. Furthermore, it is shown that IRS can help improve energy efficiency even with the uncertainty of the CSI.
We consider globally optimal precoder design for rate splitting multiple access in Gaussian multiple-input single-output downlink channels with respect to weighted sum rate and energy efficiency maximization. The proposed algorithm solves an instance of the joint multicast and unicast beamforming problem and includes multicast- and unicast-only beamforming as special cases. Numerical results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of numerical stability and converges almost twice as fast.
The main limitation of visible light communication (VLC) is the narrow modulation bandwidth, which reduces the achievable data rates. In this paper, we apply the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to enhance the achievable throughput in high-rate VLC downlink networks. We first propose a novel gain ratio power allocation (GRPA) strategy that takes into account the users channel conditions to ensure efficient and fair power allocation. Our results indicate that GRPA significantly enhances system performance compared to the static power allocation. We also study the effect of tuning the transmission angles of the light emitting diodes (LEDs) and the field of views (FOVs) of the receivers, and demonstrate that these parameters can offer new degrees of freedom to boost NOMA performance. Simulation results reveal that NOMA is a promising multiple access scheme for the downlink of VLC networks.
Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been recognized as a promising physical layer strategy for 6G. Motivated by ever increasing popularity of cache-enabled content delivery in wireless communications, this paper proposes an innovative multigroup multicast transmission scheme based on RSMA for cache-aided cloud-radio access networks (C-RAN). Our proposed scheme not only exploits the properties of content-centric communications and local caching at the base stations (BSs), but also incorporates RSMA to better manage interference in multigroup multicast transmission with statistical channel state information (CSI) known at the central processor (CP) and the BSs. At the RSMA-enabled cloud CP, the message of each multicast group is split into a private and a common part with the former private part being decoded by all users in the respective group and the latter common part being decoded by multiple users from other multicast groups. Common message decoding is done for the purpose of mitigating the interference. In this work, we jointly optimize the clustering of BSs and the precoding with the aim of maximizing the minimum rate among all multicast groups to guarantee fairness serving all groups. The problem is a mixed-integer non-linear stochastic program (MINLSP), which is solved by a practical algorithm we proposed including a heuristic clustering algorithm for assigning a set of BSs to serve each user followed by an efficient iterative algorithm that combines the sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) to solve the stochastic non-convex sub-problem of precoder design. Numerical results show the explicit max-min rate gain of our proposed transmission scheme compared to the state-of-the-art trivial interference processing methods. Therefore, we conclude that RSMA is a promising technique for cache-aided C-RAN.

Perfect channel state information (CSI) is challenging to obtain due to the limited signal processing capability at the intelligent reflection surface (IRS). In this paper, we study the worst-case robust beamforming design for an IRS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system under the assumption of imperfect CSI. We aim for minimizing the transmit power while ensuring that the achievable rate of each user meets the quality of service (QoS) requirement for all possible channel error realizations. With unit-modulus and rate constraints, this problem is non-convex. The imperfect CSI further increases the difficulty of solving this problem. By using approximation and transformation techniques, we convert this problem into a squence of semidefinite programming (SDP) subproblems that can be efficiently solved. Numerical results show that the proposed robust beamforming design can guarantee the required QoS targets for all the users.
