Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which is inherent to a Dirac particle that moves under the influence of electromagnetic fields, manifests itself in a variety of physical systems including non-relativistic ones. For instance, it plays an essential role in spintronics developed in the past few decades, particularly by controlling spin current generation and relaxation. In the present work, by using an extended Caldeira-Leggett model, we elucidate how the interplay between spin relaxation and momentum dissipation of an open system of a single spin-$1/2$ particle with a Rashba type SOC is induced by the interactions with a spinless, three-dimensional environment. Staring from the path integral formulation for the reduced density matrix of the system, we have derived a set of coupled nonlinear equations that consists of a quasi-classical Langevin equation for the momentum with a frictional term and a spin precession equation. The spin precesses around the effective magnetic field generated by both the SOC and the frictional term. It is found from analytical and numerical solutions to these equations that a spin torque effect included in the effective magnetic field causes a spin relaxation and that the spin and momentum orientations after a long time evolution are largely controlled by the Rashba coupling strength. Such a spin relaxation mechanism is qualitatively different from, e.g., the one encountered in semiconductors where essentially no momentum dissipation occurs due to the Pauli blocking.

Magnetic properties of a charged spin-1 Bose gas with ferromagnetic interactions is investigated within mean-field theory. It is shown that a competition between paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism exists in this system. It is shown that diamagnetism, being concerned with spontaneous magnetization, cannot exceed ferromagnetism in very weak magnetic field. The critical value of reduced ferromagnetic coupling of paramagnetic phase to ferromagnetic phase transition $bar I_{c}$ increases with increasing temperature. The Lande-factor $g$ is introduced to describe the strength of paramagnetic effect which comes from the spin degree of freedom. The magnetization density $bar M$ increases monotonically with $g$ for fixed reduced ferromagnetic coupling $bar I$ as $bar I>bar I_{c}$. In a weak magnetic field, ferromagnetism makes immense contribution to the magnetization density. While at a high magnetic field, the diamagnetism inclines to saturate. Evidence for condensation can be seen in the magnetization density at weak magnetic field.
Spin-dependent partial conductances are evaluated in a tight-binding description of electron transport in the presence of spin-orbit (SO) couplings, using transfer-matrix methods. As the magnitude of SO interactions increases, the separation of spin-switching channels from non-spin-switching ones is gradually erased. Spin-polarised incident beams are produced by including a Zeeman-like term in the Hamiltonian. The exiting polarisation is shown to exhibit a maximum as a function of the intensity of SO couplings. For moderate site disorder, and both weak and strong SO interactions, no evidence is found for a decay of exiting polarisation against increasing system length. With very low site disorder and weak SO couplings a spin-filter effect takes place, as polarisation {em increases} with increasing system length.

In this work, we investigate the possible dramatic effects of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on fermionic Hubbard model in a 2d square lattice. In the strong coupling limit, it leads to the Rotated Anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model which is a new class of quantum spin model. For a special equivalent class, we identify a new spin-orbital entangled commensurate ground ( Y-y ) state subject to strong quantum fluctuations at $T=0$. We evaluate the quantum fluctuations by the spin wave expansion up to order $ 1/S^2 $. In some SOC parameter regime, the Y-y state supports a massive relativistic in-commensurate magnon ( C-IC ) with its two gap minima positions continuously tuned by the SOC parameters. The C-IC magnons dominate all the low temperature thermodynamic quantities and also lead to the separation of the peak positions between the longitudinal and the transverse spin structure factors. In the weak coupling limit, any weak repulsive interaction also leads to a weak Y-y state. There is only a crossover from the weak to the strong coupling. High temperature expansions of the specific heats in both weak and strong coupling are presented. The dramatic roles to be played by these C-IC magnons at generic SOC parameters or under various external probes are hinted. Experimental applications to both layered noncentrosymmetric materials and cold atom are discussed.

Transfer-matrix methods are used for a tight-binding description of electron transport in graphene-like geometries, in the presence of spin-orbit couplings. Application of finite-size scaling and phenomenological renormalization techniques shows that, for strong enough spin-orbit interactions and increasing on-site disorder, this system undergoes a metal-insulator transition characterized by the exponents $ u=2.71(8)$, $eta=0.174(2)$. We show how one can extract information regarding spin polarization decay with distance from an injection edge, from the evolution of wave-function amplitudes in the transfer-matrix approach. For (relatively weak) spin-orbit coupling intensity $mu$, we obtain that the characteristic length $Lambda_s$ for spin-polarization decay behaves as $Lambda_s propto mu^{-2}$.
We analytically and numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in an external parabolic potential. When the spin-orbit coupling strength $kappa$ is comparable with that of the trapping potential, the density distribution centers of different components of the spinor condensate deviate evidently from the trap center in the plane wave and stripe phases. When $kappagg1$, the magnitude of this deviation decreases as $kappa$ is getting larger and larger. Correspondingly, periphery half-skyrmions textures arise. This deviation can be reflected by the non-uniform magnetic moment in the $z$ direction, $mathcal{F}_z$. With the manipulation of the external trap, the local magnitude of $mathcal{F}_z$ can be increased evidently. This kind of increase of $mathcal{F}_z$ is also observed in the square vortex lattice phase of the condensate.
