As a possible alternative to organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halide, inorganic Cs2SnI6 has drawn more and more research attention recently. In order to find more Cs2SnI6 derivatives as the potential solar cell absorber materials, I- ions in Cs2SnI6 are replaced by other halogen ions and forms the Cs2SnI6-nXn (X=F, Cl, Br; n=1~6) compounds, whose atomic structures, electronic structures and optical absorption are investigated by first principles calculation. When the alloying level n increases, the mean lattice constants, the weighted Sn-X and Cs-X bond lengths all decreases linearly; the bond length of each Sn-X diminishes slightly inside the octahedral structure; Eg of Cs2SnI6-nXn increases nonlinearly. Eleven Cs2SnI6-nXn compounds have an Eg between 1.0 eV and 2.0 eV and so can be potentially used as the light absorption layer of solar cells. Their partial DOS demonstrate that as the alloying level n increases, I 5p orbital in VBM and CBM is gradually substituted by Br 4p, or Cl 3p, or F 2p orbital. The eleven Cs2SnI6-nXn alloys all have a direct bandgap although the lattice distortion induced by the alloyed X- ion.

The molybdate oxides SrMoO$_3$, PbMoO$_3$, and LaMoO$_3$ are a class of metallic perovskites that exhibit interesting properties including high mobility, and unusual resistivity behavior. We use first-principles methods based on density functional theory to explore the electronic, crystal, and magnetic structure of these materials. In order to account for the electron correlations in the partially-filled Mo $4d$ shell, a local Hubbard $U$ interaction is included. The value of $U$ is estimated via the constrained random-phase approximation approach, and the dependence of the results on the choice of $U$ are explored. For all materials, GGA+$U$ predicts a metal with an orthorhombic, antiferromagnetic structure. For LaMoO$_3$, the $Pnma$ space group is the most stable, while for SrMoO$_3$ and PbMoO$_3$, the $Imma$ and $Pnma$ structures are close in energy. The $R_4^+$ octahedral rotations for SrMoO$_3$ and PbMoO$_3$ are found to be overestimated compared to the experimental low-temperature structure.
We present a systematic study of the atomic and electronic structure of the Si(111)-(5x2)-Au reconstruction using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the density functional theory. We analyze the structural models proposed by Marks and Plass [Phys. Rev. Lett.75, 2172 (1995)], those proposed recently by Erwin [Phys. Rev. Lett.91, 206101 (2003)], and a completely new structure that was found during our structural optimizations. We study in detail the energetics and the structural and electronic properties of the different models. For the two most stable models, we also calculate the change in the surface energy as a function of the content of silicon adatoms for a realistic range of concentrations. Our new model is the energetically most favorable in the range of low adatom concentrations, while Erwins 5x2 model becomes favorable for larger adatom concentrations. The crossing between the surface energies of both structures is found close to 1/2 adatoms per 5x2 unit cell, i.e. near the maximum adatom coverage observed in the experiments. Both models, the new structure and Erwins 5x2 model, seem to provide a good description of many of the available experimental data, particularly of the angle-resolved photoemission measurements.
Alanates and boranates are studied intensively because of their potential use as hydrogen storage materials. In this paper we present a first-principles study of the electronic structure and the energetics of beryllium boranate, Be(BH4)2. From total energy calculations we show that - in contrast to the other boranates and alanates - hydrogen desorption directly to the elements is likely, and is at least competitive with desorption to the elemental hydride (BeH2). The formation enthalpy of Be(BH4)2 is only -0.12 eV/H2 (at T=0K). This low value can be rationalized by the participation of all atoms in the covalent bonding, in contrast to the ionic bonding observed in other boranates. From calculations of thermodynamic properties at finite temperature we estimate a decomposition temperature of 162 K at a pressure of 1 bar.
Depending on their chemical composition, Yb compounds often exhibit different valence states. Here we investigate the valence state of YbFe$_4$Al$_8$ using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and first-principles calculaions. The XPS valence band of YbFe$_4$Al$_8$ consists of two contributions coming from divalent (Yb$^{2+}$) and trivalent (Yb$^{3+}$) configurations. The determined value of the valence at room temperature is 2.81. Divalent and trivalent contributions are also observed for core-level Yb 4$d$ XPS spectra. We study several collinear antiferromagnetic models of YbFe$_4$Al$_8$ from the first-principles and for comparison we also consider LuFe$_4$Al$_8$ with a fully filled 4$f$ shell. We predict that only Fe sublattices of YbFe$_4$Al$_8$ carry significant magnetic moments and that the most stable magnetic configuration is AFM-C with antiparallel columns of magnetic moments. We also present a Mullliken electronic population analysis describing charge transfer both within and between atoms. In addition, we also study the effect of intra-atomic Coulomb U repulsion term applied for 4$f$ orbitals on Yb valence and Fe magnetic moments.
A novel stable crystallographic structure is discovered in a variety of ABO3, ABF3 and A2O3 compounds (including materials of geological relevance, prototypes of multiferroics, exhibiting strong spin-orbit effects, etc...), via the use of first principles. This novel structure appears under hydrostatic pressure, and is the first post-post-perovskite phase to be found. It provides a successful solution to experimental puzzles in important systems, and is characterized by one-dimensional chains linked by group of two via edge-sharing oxygen/fluorine octahedra. Such unprecedented organization automatically results in anisotropic elastic properties and new magnetic arrangements. Depending on the system of choice, this post-post-perovskite structure also possesses electronic band gaps ranging from zero to ~ 10 eV being direct or indirect in nature, which emphasizes its universality and its potential to have striking, e.g., electrical or transport phenomena.
