We propose an efficient, accurate and robust implicit solver for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, based on a DG spatial discretization and on the TR-BDF2 method for time discretization. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated in a number of classical benchmarks, which highlight its superior efficiency with respect to other widely used implicit approaches. The parallel implementation of the proposed method in the framework of the deal.II software package allows for accurate and efficient adaptive simulations in complex geometries, which makes the proposed solver attractive for large scale industrial applications.

We develop a novel iterative solution method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with boundary conditions coupled with reduced models. The iterative algorithm is designed based on the variational multiscale formulation and the generalized-$alpha$ scheme. The spatiotemporal discretization leads to a block structure of the resulting consistent tangent matrix in the Newton-Raphson procedure. As a generalization of the conventional block preconditioners, a three-level nested block preconditioner is introduced to attain a better representation of the Schur complement, which plays a key role in the overall algorithm robustness and efficiency. This approach provides a flexible, algorithmic way to handle the Schur complement for problems involving multiscale and multiphysics coupling. The solution method is implemented and benchmarked against experimental data from the nozzle challenge problem issued by the US Food and Drug Administration. The robustness, efficiency, and parallel scalability of the proposed technique are then examined in several settings, including moderately high Reynolds number flows and physiological flows with strong resistance effect due to coupled downstream vasculature models. Two patient-specific hemodynamic simulations, covering systemic and pulmonary flows, are performed to further corroborate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

We present an energy-stable scheme for simulating the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations based on the generalized Positive Auxiliary Variable (gPAV) framework. In the gPAV-reformulated system the original nonlinear term is replaced by a linear term plus a correction term, where the correction term is put under control by an auxiliary variable. The proposed scheme incorporates a pressure-correction type strategy into the gPAV procedure, and it satisfies a discrete energy stability property. The scheme entails the computation of two copies of the velocity and pressure within a time step, by solving an individual de-coupled linear equation for each of these field variables. Upon discretization the pressure linear system involves a constant coefficient matrix that can be pre-computed, while the velocity linear system involves a coefficient matrix that is updated periodically, once every $k_0$ time steps in the current work, where $k_0$ is a user-specified integer. The auxiliary variable, being a scalar-valued number, is computed by a well-defined explicit formula, which guarantees the positivity of its computed values. It is observed that the current method can produce accurate simulation results at large (or fairly large) time step sizes for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The impact of the periodic coefficient-matrix update on the overall cost of the method is observed to be small in typical numerical simulations. Several flow problems have been simulated to demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the method developed herein.
We present a projection-based framework for solving a thermodynamically-consistent Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes system that models two-phase flows. In this work we extend the fully implicit method presented in Khanwale et al. [{it A fully-coupled framework for solving Cahn-Hilliard Navier-Stokes equations: Second-order, energy-stable numerical methods on adaptive octree based meshes.}, arXiv:2009.06628 (2020)], to a block iterative hybrid method. We use a projection-based semi-implicit time discretization for the Navier-Stokes and a fully-implicit time discretization for the Cahn-Hilliard equation. We use a conforming continuous Galerkin (cG) finite element method in space equipped with a residual-based variational multiscale (RBVMS) formulation. Pressure is decoupled using a projection step, which results in two linear positive semi-definite systems for velocity and pressure, instead of the saddle point system of a pressure-stabilized method. All the linear systems are solved using an efficient and scalable algebraic multigrid (AMG) method. We deploy this approach on a massively parallel numerical implementation using parallel octree-based adaptive meshes. The overall approach allows the use of relatively large time steps with much faster time-to-solve. We present comprehensive numerical experiments showing detailed comparisons with results from the literature for canonical cases, including the single bubble rise and Rayleigh-Taylor instability.
We design consistent discontinuous Galerkin finite element schemes for the approximation of the Euler-Korteweg and the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg systems. We show that the scheme for the Euler-Korteweg system is energy and mass conservative and that the scheme for the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg system is mass conservative and monotonically energy dissipative. In this case the dissipation is isolated to viscous effects, that is, there is no numerical dissipation. In this sense the methods is consistent with the energy dissipation of the continuous PDE systems.

In this work, we develop a high-order pressure-robust method for the rotation form of the stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The original idea is to change the velocity test functions in the discretization of trilinear and right hand side terms by using an H(div)-conforming velocity reconstruction operator. In order to match the rotation form and error analysis, a novel skew-symmetric discrete trilinear form containing the reconstruction operator is proposed, in which not only the velocity test function is changed. The corresponding well-posed discrete weak formulation stems straight from the classical inf-sup stable mixed conforming high-order finite elements, and it is proven to achieve the pressure-independent velocity errors. Optimal convergence rates of H1, L2-error for the velocity and L2-error for the Bernoulli pressure are completely established. Adequate numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the theoretical results and the remarkable performance of the proposed method.
