CaCo2As2 is a unique itinerant system having strong magnetic frustration. Here we report the effect of electron doping on the physical properties resulting from Ni substitutions for Co. The A-type antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN = 52 K for x = 0 decreases to 22 K with only 3 percent Ni substitution and is completely suppressed for x > 0.11. For 0.11 < x < 0.52 strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations develop as revealed by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements. Heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements reveal the presence of FM quantum spin fluctuations for 0.11 < x < 0.52. Our density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that FM fluctuations are enhanced by Ni substitutions for Co. The Sommerfeld electronic heat-capacity coefficient is enhanced for x = 0, 0.21, and 0.42 by about a factor of two compared to DFT calculations of the bare density of states at the Fermi energy. The crystals with x > 0.52 do not exhibit FM spin fluctuations or magnetic order, which was found from the DFT calculations to arise from a Stoner transition. Neutron-diffraction studies of crystals with x = 0.11 and 0.16 found no evidence of A-type ordering as observed in CaCo2As2 or of other common magnetic structures.

Nd_0.5 Ca_0.5 MnO_3 (NCMO) nanoparticles (average diameter ~ 20 and 40 nm) are synthesized by polymeric precursor sol-gel method and characterized by X- ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selective area electron diffraction (SAED), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometery and resistivity measurements. Both single crystalline and polycrystalline particles are present in the samples and they are found to retain the orthorhombic structure of the bulk NCMO. However, most strikingly, in the 20 nm particles, the charge ordered (CO) and the antiferromagnetic phases observed in the bulk at 250 K and 160 K respectively are completely absent. Instead, a ferromagnetic (FM) transition is observed at 95 K followed by an insulator to metal transition at 75 K. In the 40 nm particles, though a weak, residual CO phase is observed, transition to FM state also occurs, but at a slightly higher temperature of 110 K. The magnetization is found to increase with the decrease of particle size.

Correlated oxides can exhibit complex magnetic patterns, characterized by domains with vastly different size, shape and magnetic moment spanning the material. Understanding how magnetic domains form in the presence of chemical disorder and their robustness to temperature variations has been of particular interest, but atomic-scale insight into this problem has been limited. We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to image the evolution of spin-resolved modulations originating from antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering in a spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr3Ir2O7 as a function of chemical composition and temperature. We find that replacing only several percent of La for Sr leaves behind nanometer-scale AF puddles clustering away from La substitutions preferentially located in the middle SrO layer within the unit cell. Thermal erasure and re-entry into the low-temperature ground state leads to a spatial reorganization of the AF modulations, indicating multiple stable AF configurations at low temperature. Interestingly, regardless of this rearrangement, the AF puddles maintain scale-invariant fractal geometry in each configuration. Our experiments reveal spatial fluctuations of the AF order in electron doped Sr3Ir2O7, and shed light on its sensitivity to different types of atomic-scale disorder.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $textbf{Q}_{rm AF}$=(1,0) and $textbf{Q}_{rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.
We show for the system La1-xCexCoO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) that it is possible to synthesize electron-doped cobaltites by the growth of epitaxial thin films. For La1-xCexCoO3, ferromagnetic order is observed within the entire doping range (with the maximum of the Curie temperature, Tc, at x ca. 0.3), resulting in a magnetic phase diagram similar to that of hole-doped lanthanum cobaltites. The measured spin values strongly suggest an intermediate-spin state of the Co ions which has been also found in the hole-doped system. In contrast to the hole-doped material, however, where Tc is well above 200 K, we observe a strong suppression of the maximum Tc to about 22 K. This is likely to be caused by a considerable decrease of the Co3d - O2p hybridization. The observed intriguing magnetic properties are in agreement with previously reported theoretical results.

A series of Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals was synthesized allowing a comprehensive phase diagram with respect to field, temperature, and chemical substitution to be established. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed a helimagnetic order with magnetic moments ferromagnetically (FM) aligned in the $ab$ plane and a helimagnetic wavevector of $q=(0,0,0.56)$ for $x$ = 0.1. The combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the tuning of a flat band with $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital character drives the helimagnetism and indicates the possibility of a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism.
