The modern power system is evolving with increasing penetration of power electronics introducing complicated electromagnetic phenomenon. Electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is essential to understand power system behavior under disturbance which however is one of the most sophisticated and time-consuming applications in power system. To improve the electromagnetic transient simulation efficiency while keeping the simulation accuracy, this paper proposes to model and simulate power system electromagnetic transients by very large-scale integrated circuit (VLSI) as a preliminary exploration to eventually represent power system by VLSI circuit chip avoiding numerical calculation. To proof the concept, a simple 5 bus system is modeled and simulated to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach.
Transient stability analysis (TSA) plays an important role in power system analysis to investigate the stability of power system. Traditionally, transient stability analysis methods have been developed using time domain simulation by means of numerical integration method. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to model power systems as an integrated circuit and simulate the power system dynamic behavior by integrated circuit simulator. The proposed method modeled power grid, generator, governor, and exciter with high fidelity. The power system dynamic simulation accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach are verified and demonstrated by case study on an IEEE standard system.
This paper presents a network hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation system for modeling large-scale power systems. Researchers have developed many HIL test systems for power systems in recent years. Those test systems can model both microsecond-level dynamic responses of power electronic systems and millisecond-level transients of transmission and distribution grids. By integrating individual HIL test systems into a network of HIL test systems, we can create large-scale power grid digital twins with flexible structures at required modeling resolution that fits for a wide range of system operating conditions. This will not only significantly reduce the need for field tests when developing new technologies but also greatly shorten the model development cycle. In this paper, we present a networked OPAL-RT based HIL test system for developing transmission-distribution coordinative Volt-VAR regulation technologies as an example to illustrate system setups, communication requirements among different HIL simulation systems, and system connection mechanisms. Impacts of communication delays, information exchange cycles, and computing delays are illustrated. Simulation results show that the performance of a networked HIL test system is satisfactory.
The need for Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) is expected to increase significantly in future low-carbon Great Britain (GB) power system. One way to provide EFR is to use power electronic compensators (PECs) for point-of-load voltage control (PVC) to exploit the voltage dependence of loads. This paper investigates the techno-economic feasibility of such technology in future GB power system by quantifying the total EFR obtainable through deploying PVC in the urban domestic sector, the investment cost of the installment and the economic and environmental benefits of using PVC. The quantification is based on a stochastic domestic demand model and generic medium and low-voltage distribution networks for the urban areas of GB and a stochastic unit commitment (SUC) model with constraints for secure post-fault frequency evolution is used for the value assessment. Two future energy scenarios in the backdrop of 2030 with `smart and `non-smart control of electric vehicles and heat pumps, under different levels of penetration of battery energy storage system (BESS) are considered to assess the value of PEC, as well as the associated payback period. It is demonstrated that PVC could effectively complement BESS towards EFR provision in future GB power system.
This letter proposes a mass-matrix differential-algebraic equation (DAE) formulation for transient stability simulation. This formulation has two prominent advantages: compatible with a multitude of implicit DAE solvers and can be conveniently implemented based on the traditional formulation, for example, by separating the parameters in denominators into the diagonals of the mass matrix. It also allows reducing the dynamics using null time constants. Benchmark studies are presented on the time and accuracy of 17 implicit solvers for the proposed formulation using the Kundurs two-area system and a 2,000 bus system.
Fast and accurate optimization and simulation is widely becoming a necessity for large scale transmission resiliency and planning studies such as N-1 SCOPF, batch contingency solvers, and stochastic power flow. Current commercial tools, however, prioritize speed of convergence over accuracy by relying on initial conditions that are taken from the steady state solution of similar network configurations that are not guaranteed to lie within a convex region of a valid solution. In this paper we introduce a globally convergent algorithm to facilitate fast and accurate AC steady state simulation and optimization based on prior knowledge from similar networks. The approach uses a homotopy method that gradually and efficiently translates a previously known network configuration to the current network configuration. The proposed formulation is highly scalable, and its efficacy is demonstrated for resiliency study and optimization of large networks up to 70k buses.
