Based on the Wigner function in local equilibrium, we derive hydrodynamical quantities for a system of polarized spin-1/2 particles: the particle number current density, the energy-momentum tensor, the spin tensor, and the dipole moment tensor. Comparing with ideal hydrodynamics without spin, additional terms at first and second order in space-time gradient have been derived. The Wigner function can be expressed in terms of matrix-valued distributions, whose equilibrium forms are characterized by thermodynamical parameters in quantum statistics. The equations of motions for these parameters are derived by conservation laws at the leading and next-to-leading order in space-time gradient.

Newly introduced equilibrium Wigner functions for particles with spin one-half are used in the semi-classical kinetic equations to study a possible relation between thermal vorticity and spin polarization. It is shown that in global equilibrium both the thermal-vorticity and spin polarization tensors are constant but not necessarily equal. In the case of local equilibrium, we define a procedure leading to hydrodynamic equations with spin. We introduce such equations for the de~Groot, van~Leeuwen, and van~Weert (GLW) formalism as well as for the canonical scheme (these two frameworks differ by the definitions of the energy-momentum and spin tensors). It is found that the GLW and canonica
We present a variational approach for relativistic ideal hydrodynamics interacting with electromagnetic fields. The momentum of fluid is introduced as the canonical conjugate variable of the position of a fluid element, which coincides with the conserved quantity derived from the Noether theorem. We further show that our formulation can reproduce the usual electromagnetic hydrodynamics which is obtained so as to satisfy the conservation of the inertia of fluid motion.

We study the Wigner function for massive spin-1/2 fermions in electromagnetic fields. Dirac form kinetic equation and Klein-Gordon form kinetic equation are obtained for the Wigner function, which are derived from the Dirac equation. The Wigner function and its kinetic equations are expanded in terms of the generators of Clifford algebra and a complicated system of partial differential equations is obtained. We prove that some component equations are automattically satisfied if the rest ones are fulfilled. In this thesis two methods are proposed for calculating the Wigner function, which are proved to be equivalent. The Wigner function is analytically calculated following the standard second-quantization procedure in the following cases: free fermions with or without spin imbalance, in constant magnetic field, in constant electric field, and in constant parallel electromagnetic field. Strong-field effects, such as the Landau levels and Schwinger pair-production are reproduced using the Wigner function approach. For an arbitrary space-time dependent field configuration, a semi-classical expansion with respect to the reduced Plancks constant $hbar$ is performed. We derive general expressions for the Wigner function components at linear order in $hbar$, in which order the spin corrections start playing a role. A generalized Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (BMT) equation and a generalized Boltzmann equation are obtained for the undetermined polarization density and net fermion number density, which can be used to construct spin-hydrodynamics in the future. We also make a comparison between analytical results and the ones from semi-classical expansion, which shows coincidence for weak electromagnetic fields and small spin imbalance.
Within Wigner function formalism, the chiral anomaly arises naturally from the Dirac sea contribution in un-normal-ordered Wigner function. For massless fermions, the Dirac sea contribution behaves like a 4-dimensional or 3-dimensional Berry monopole in Euclidian momentum space, while for massive fermions, although Dirac sea still leads to the chiral anomaly but there is no Berry monopole at infrared momentum region. We discuss these points explicitly in a simple and concrete example.
We study the Wigner function for the inflationary tensor perturbation defined in the real phase space. We compute explicitly the Wigner function including the contributions from the cubic self-interaction Hamiltonian of tensor perturbations. Then we argue that it is no longer an appropriate description for the probability distribution in the sense that quantum nature allows negativity around vanishing phase variables. This comes from the non-Gaussian wavefunction in the mixed state as a result of the non-linear interaction between super- and sub-horizon modes. We also show that this is related to the explicit infrared divergence in the Wigner function, in contrast to the trace of the density matrix.
