In this paper, we propose an end-to-end framework for instance segmentation. Based on the recently introduced DETR [1], our method, termed SOLQ, segments objects by learning unified queries. In SOLQ, each query represents one object and has multiple representations: class, location and mask. The object queries learned perform classification, box regression and mask encoding simultaneously in an unified vector form. During training phase, the mask vectors encoded are supervised by the compression coding of raw spatial masks. In inference time, mask vectors produced can be directly transformed to spatial masks by the inverse process of compression coding. Experimental results show that SOLQ can achieve state-of-the-art performance, surpassing most of existing approaches. Moreover, the joint learning of unified query representation can greatly improve the detection performance of original DETR. We hope our SOLQ can serve as a strong baseline for the Transformer-based instance segmentation. Code is available at https://github.com/megvii-research/SOLQ.
Most recent transformer-based models show impressive performance on vision tasks, even better than Convolution Neural Networks (CNN). In this work, we present a novel, flexible, and effective transformer-based model for high-quality instance segmentation. The proposed method, Segmenting Objects with TRansformers (SOTR), simplifies the segmentation pipeline, building on an alternative CNN backbone appended with two parallel subtasks: (1) predicting per-instance category via transformer and (2) dynamically generating segmentation mask with the multi-level upsampling module. SOTR can effectively extract lower-level feature representations and capture long-range context dependencies by Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) and twin transformer, respectively. Meanwhile, compared with the original transformer, the proposed twin transformer is time- and resource-efficient since only a row and a column attention are involved to encode pixels. Moreover, SOTR is easy to be incorporated with various CNN backbones and transformer model variants to make considerable improvements for the segmentation accuracy and training convergence. Extensive experiments show that our SOTR performs well on the MS COCO dataset and surpasses state-of-the-art instance segmentation approaches. This work is to tackle the problem of point cloud semantic segmentation for 3D hybrid scenes under the framework of zero-shot learning. Here by hybrid, we mean the scene consists of both seen-class and unseen-class 3D objects, a more general and realistic setting in application. To our knowledge, this problem has not been explored in the literature. To this end, we propose a network to synthesize point features for various classes of objects by leveraging the semantic features of both seen and unseen object classes, called PFNet. The proposed PFNet employs a GAN architecture to synthesize point features, where the semantic relationship between seen-class and unseen-class features is consolidated by adapting a new semantic regularizer, and the synthesized features are used to train a classifier for predicting the labels of the testing 3D scene points. Besides we also introduce two benchmarks for algorithmic evaluation by re-organizing the public S3DIS and ScanNet datasets under six different data splits. Experimental results on the two benchmarks validate our proposed method, and we hope our introduced two benchmarks and methodology could be of help for more research on this new direction.
Much of the remarkable progress in computer vision has been focused around fully supervised learning mechanisms relying on highly curated datasets for a variety of tasks. In contrast, humans often learn about their world with little to no external supervision. Taking inspiration from infants learning from their environment through play and interaction, we present a computational framework to discover objects and learn their physical properties along this paradigm of Learning from Interaction. Our agent, when placed within the near photo-realistic and physics-enabled AI2-THOR environment, interacts with its world and learns about objects, their geometric extents and relative masses, without any external guidance. Our experiments reveal that this agent learns efficiently and effectively; not just for objects it has interacted with before, but also for novel instances from seen categories as well as novel object categories.
Learning deformable 3D objects from 2D images is an extremely ill-posed problem. Existing methods rely on explicit supervision to establish multi-view correspondences, such as template shape models and keypoint annotations, which restricts their applicability on objects in the wild. In this paper, we propose to use monocular videos, which naturally provide correspondences across time, allowing us to learn 3D shapes of deformable object categories without explicit keypoints or template shapes. Specifically, we present DOVE, which learns to predict 3D canonical shape, deformation, viewpoint and texture from a single 2D image of a bird, given a bird video collection as well as automatically obtained silhouettes and optical flows as training data. Our method reconstructs temporally consistent 3D shape and deformation, which allows us to animate and re-render the bird from arbitrary viewpoints from a single image.
We show dense voxel embeddings learned via deep metric learning can be employed to produce a highly accurate segmentation of neurons from 3D electron microscopy images. A metric graph on a set of edges between voxels is constructed from the dense voxel embeddings generated by a convolutional network. Partitioning the metric graph with long-range edges as repulsive constraints yields an initial segmentation with high precision, with substantial accuracy gain for very thin objects. The convolutional embedding net is reused without any modification to agglomerate the systematic splits caused by complex self-contact motifs. Our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art accuracy on the challenging problem of 3D neuron reconstruction from the brain images acquired by serial section electron microscopy. Our alternative, object-centered representation could be more generally useful for other computational tasks in automated neural circuit reconstruction.
