In this paper we consider Hankel operators on domains with bounded intrinsic geometry. For these domains we characterize the $L^2$-symbols where the associated Hankel operator is compact (respectively bounded) on the space of square integrable holomorphic functions.
For a non-empty compact set $E$ in a proper subdomain $Omega$ of the complex plane, we denote the diameter of $E$ and the distance from $E$ to the boundary of $Omega$ by $d(E)$ and $d(E,partialOmega),$ respectively. The quantity $d(E)/d(E,partialOmega)$ is invariant under similarities and plays an important role in Geometric Function Theory. In the present paper, when $Omega$ has the hyperbolic distance $h_Omega(z,w),$ we consider the infimum $kappa(Omega)$ of the quantity $h_Omega(E)/log(1+d(E)/d(E,partialOmega))$ over compact subsets $E$ of $Omega$ with at least two points, where $h_Omega(E)$ stands for the hyperbolic diameter of the set $E.$ We denote the upper half-plane by $mathbb{H}$. Our main results claim that $kappa(Omega)$ is positive if and only if the boundary of $Omega$ is uniformly perfect and that the inequality $kappa(Omega)leqkappa(mathbb{H})$ holds for all $Omega,$ where equality holds precisely when $Omega$ is convex.
We describe recent work on the Bergman kernel of the (non-smooth) worm domain in several complex variables. An asymptotic expansion is obtained for the Bergman kernel. Mapping properties of the Bergman projection are studied. Irregularity properties of the kernal at the boundary are established. This is an expository paper, and considerable background is provided. Discussion of the smooth worm is also included.
For any real $beta$ let $H^2_beta$ be the Hardy-Sobolev space on the unit disk $D$. $H^2_beta$ is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space and its reproducing kernel is bounded when $beta>1/2$. In this paper, we study composition operators $C_varphi$ on $H^2_beta$ for $1/2<beta<1$. Our main result is that, for a non-constant analytic function $varphi:DtoD$, the operator $C_{varphi }$ has dense range in $H_{beta }^{2}$ if and only if the polynomials are dense in a certain Dirichlet space of the domain $varphi(D)$. It follows that if the range of $C_{varphi }$ is dense in $H_{beta }^{2}$, then $varphi $ is a weak-star generator of $H^{infty}$. Note that this conclusion is false for the classical Dirichlet space $mathfrak{D}$. We also characterize Fredholm composition operators on $H^{2}_{beta }$.
A multiplicative Hankel operator is an operator with matrix representation $M(alpha) = {alpha(nm)}_{n,m=1}^infty$, where $alpha$ is the generating sequence of $M(alpha)$. Let $mathcal{M}$ and $mathcal{M}_0$ denote the spaces of bounded and compact multiplicative Hankel operators, respectively. In this note it is shown that the distance from an operator $M(alpha) in mathcal{M}$ to the compact operators is minimized by a nonunique compact multiplicative Hankel operator $N(beta) in mathcal{M}_0$, $$|M(alpha) - N(beta)|_{mathcal{B}(ell^2(mathbb{N}))} = inf left {|M(alpha) - K |_{mathcal{B}(ell^2(mathbb{N}))} , : , K colon ell^2(mathbb{N}) to ell^2(mathbb{N}) textrm{ compact} right}.$$ Intimately connected with this result, it is then proven that the bidual of $mathcal{M}_0$ is isometrically isomorphic to $mathcal{M}$, $mathcal{M}_0^{ast ast} simeq mathcal{M}$. It follows that $mathcal{M}_0$ is an M-ideal in $mathcal{M}$. The dual space $mathcal{M}_0^ast$ is isometrically isomorphic to a projective tensor product with respect to Dirichlet convolution. The stated results are also valid for small Hankel operators on the Hardy space $H^2(mathbb{D}^d)$ of a finite polydisk.
We introduce a family of weighted BMO and VMO spaces for the unit ball and use them to characterize bounded and compact Hankel operators between different Bergman spaces. In particular, we resolve two problems left open by S. Janson in 1988 and R. Wallsten in 1990.
