Determination of the high density behavior of the symmetry energy through the simultaneous measurement of elliptic flow excitation functions of neutrons, protons and light clusters is proposed. The elliptic flow developed in relativistic heavy ion collisions has been proven theoretically and experimentally to have a unique sensitivity and robustness in probing the symmetry energy up to around $2 rho_{o}$. The knowledge of the density dependence of the symmetry energy in a broad range of densities will provide a missing link for astrophysical predictions of the neutron star mass--radius relation. In particular, the data colud provide tighter constraints on the slope parameter L and entirely new limits on $K_{sym}$, the currently poorly constrained symmetry energy curvature parameter.

A new method for extracting neutron densities from intermediate energy elastic proton-nucleus scattering observables uses a global Dirac phenomenological (DP) approach based on the Relativistic Impulse Approximation (RIA). Data sets for Ca40, Ca48 and Pb208 in the energy range from 500 MeV to 1040 MeV are considered. The global fits are successful in reproducing the data and in predicting data sets not included in the analysis. Using this global approach, energy independent neutron densities are obtained. The vector point proton density distribution is determined from the empirical charge density after unfolding the proton form factor. The other densities are parametrized. This work provides energy independent values for the RMS neutron radius, R_n and the neutron skin thickness, S_n, in contrast to the energy dependent values obtained by previous studies. In addition, the results presented in paper show that the expected rms neutron radius and skin thickness for Ca40 is accurately reproduced. The values of R_n and S_n obtained from the global fits that we consider to be the most reliable are given as follows: for Ca40 R_n is 3.314 > R_n > 3.310 fm and S_n is -0.063 > S_n > -0.067 fm; for Ca48 R_n is 3.459 > R_n > 3.413 fm and S_n is 0.102 > S_n > 0.056 fm; and for Pb208 R_n is 5.550 > R_n > 5.522 and S_n is 0.111 > S_n > 0.083 fm. These values are in reasonable agreement with nonrelativistic Skyrme Hartree-Fock models and with relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov models with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings. The results from the global fits for Ca48 and Pb208 are generally not in agreement with the usual relativistic mean-field models.
The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011.

Motivated by the historical detection of gravitational waves from GW170817, the neutron star and the neutron drop, i.e., a certain number of neutrons confined in an external field, are systematically investigated by ab initio calculations as well as the nonrelativistic and relativistic state-of-art density functional theories. Strong correlations are found among the neutron star tidal deformability, the neutron star radius, the root-mean-square radii of neutron drops, and the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at supra-saturation densities. From these correlations and the upper limit on the tidal deformability extracted from GW170817, the neutron star radii, the neutron drop radii, and the symmetry energy at twice saturation density are respectively constrained as $R_{1.4M_{odot}}leqslant 12.94$ km, $R_{rm nd} leqslant 2.36$ fm, and $E_{mathrm{sym}}(2rho_0) leqslant 53.2$ MeV.
A sensitive correlation between the ground-state properties of light kaonic nuclei and the symmetry energy at high densities is constructed under the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. Taking oxygen isotopes as an example, we see that a high-density core is produced in kaonic oxygen nuclei, due to the strongly attractive antikaon-nucleon interaction. It is found that the $1S_{1/2}$ state energy in the high-density core of kaonic nuclei can directly probe the variation of the symmetry energy at supranormal nuclear density, and a sensitive correlation between the neutron skin thickness and the symmetry energy at supranormal density is established directly. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of the neutron skin thickness to the low-density slope of the symmetry energy is greatly increased in the corresponding kaonic nuclei. These sensitive relationships are established upon the fact that the isovector potential in the central region of kaonic nuclei becomes very sensitive to the variation of the symmetry energy. These findings might provide another perspective to constrain high-density symmetry energy, and await experimental verification in the future.
The Thick Target Inverse Kinematic (TTIK) approach was used to measure excitation functions for the elastic 17O ({alpha}, {alpha}) scattering at the initial 17O beam energy of 54.4 MeV. We observed strong peaks corresponding to highly excited {alpha}-cluster states in the 21Ne excitation energy region of 8-16 MeV, which have never been investigated before. Additional tests were done at a 17O beam energy of 56.4 MeV to estimate a possible contribution of resonance inelastic scattering.
