We derive constraints on scalar field theories coupled to gravity by using recently developed positivity bounds in the presence of gravity. It is found that a canonically-normalized real scalar cannot have an arbitrarily flat potential unless some new physics enters well below the Planck scale. An upper bound on the scale of new physics is determined by loop corrections to the self-energy. Our result provides a swampland condition for scalar potentials.

We study the validity of positivity bounds in the presence of a massless graviton, assuming the Regge behavior of the amplitude. Under this assumption, the problematic $t$-channel pole is canceled with the UV integral of the imaginary part of the amplitude in the dispersion relation, which gives rise to finite corrections to the positivity bounds. We find that low-energy effective field theories (EFT) with wrong sign are generically allowed. The allowed amount of the positivity violation is determined by the Regge behavior. This violation is suppressed by $M_{rm pl}^{-2}alpha$ where $alpha$ is the scale of Reggeization. This implies that the positivity bounds can be applied only when the cutoff scale of EFT is much lower than the scale of Reggeization. We then obtain the positivity bounds on scalar-tensor EFT at one-loop level. Implications of our results on the degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory are also discussed.

We derive positivity bounds on low energy effective field theories which admit gapped, analytic, unitary, Lorentz invariant, and possibly non-local UV completions, by considering 2 to 2 scatterings of Jaffe fields whose Lehmann-K{a}ll{e}n spectral density can grow exponentially. Several properties of S-matrix, such as analyticity properties, are assumed in our derivation. Interestingly, we find that some of the positivity bounds obtained in the literature, such as sub-leading order forward-limit bounds, must be satisfied even when UV completions fall into non-localizable theories in Jaffes language, unless momentum space Wightman functions grow too rapidly at high energy. Under this restriction on the growth rate, such bounds may provide IR obstructions to analytic, unitary, and Lorentz invariant UV completions.
We develop a full four-dimensional numerical code to study scalar gravitational radiation emitted from binary systems and probe the Vainshtein mechanism in situations that break the static and spherical symmetry, relevant for binary pulsars as well as black holes and neutron stars binaries. The present study focuses on the cubic Galileon which arises as the decoupling limit of massive theories of gravity. Limitations associated with the numerical methods prevent us from reaching a physically realistic hierarchy of scales; nevertheless, within this context we observe the same power law scaling of the radiated power as previous analytic estimates, and confirm a strong suppression of the power emitted in the monopole and dipole as compared with quadrupole radiation. Following the trend to more physically realistic parameters, we confirm the suppression of the power emitted in scalar gravitational radiation and the recovery of General Relativity with good accuracy. This paves the way for future numerical work, probing more generic, physically relevant situations and sets of interactions that may exhibit the Vainshtein mechanism.
Upcoming searches for the stochastic background of inflationary gravitational waves (GWs) offer the exciting possibility to probe the evolution of our Universe prior to Big Bang nucleosynthesis. In this spirit, we explore the sensitivity of future GW observations to a broad class of beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios that lead to a nonstandard expansion history. We consider a new scalar field whose coherent oscillations dominate the energy density of the Universe at very early times, resulting in a scalar era prior to the standard radiation-dominated era. The imprint of this scalar era on the primordial GW spectrum provides a means to probe well-motivated yet elusive models of particle physics. Our work highlights the complementarity of future GW observatories across the entire range of accessible frequencies.

In this paper we revisit the dynamical dark energy model building based on single scalar field involving higher derivative terms. By imposing a degenerate condition on the higher derivatives in curved spacetime, one can select the models which are free from the ghost mode and the equation of state is able to cross the cosmological constant boundary smoothly, dynamically violate the null energy condition. Generally the Lagrangian of this type of dark energy models depends on the second derivatives linearly. It behaves like an imperfect fluid, thus its cosmological perturbation theory needs to be generalized. We also study such a model with explicit form of degenerate Lagrangian and show that its equation of state may cross -1 without any instability.
