A sterile neutrino in the $3+1$ scheme, where the sterile accounts for neutrino anomalies not explained solely by the weak active neutrinos, arises as a natural source for the breaking of the $mu-tau$ symmetry suggested by oscillation neutrino data. We explore the predictions for the Dirac CP phases in this scenario, with and without sterile neutrino decay, and show that current limits on $delta_{CP}$ suggest a normal hierarchy and a lightest neutrino scale below 0.1~eV as the most plausible explanation for that, when Majorana phases are null. Other Dirac phases turn out to be non zero as well.

We investigate the consequences of $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry in presence of a light sterile neutrino for the $3+1$ neutrino mixing scheme. We discuss the implications of total $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry as well partial $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry. For the total $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry we find values of $theta_{23}$ and $delta$ remains confined near $pi/4$ and $pm pi/2$ respectively. The current allowed region for $theta_{23}$ and $delta$ in case of inverted hierarchy lies outside the area preferred by the total $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry. However, interesting predictions on the neutrino mixing angles and Dirac CP violating phases are obtained considering partial $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry. We obtain predictive correlations between the neutrino mixing angle $theta_{23}$ and Dirac CP phase $delta$ and study the testability of these correlations at the future long baseline experiment DUNE. We find that while the imposition of $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry in the first column admit both normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, demanding $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry for the second column excludes the inverted hierarchy. Interestingly, the sterile mixing angle $theta_{34}$ gets tightly constrained considering the $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry in the fourth column. We also study consequences of $mu-tau$ reflection symmetry for the Majorana phases and neutrinoless double beta decay.
The $mu$-$tau$ exchange symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix and its breaking as a perturbation are discussed. The exact $mu$-$tau$ symmetry restricts the 2-3 and 1-3 neutrino mixing angles as $theta_{23} = pi/4$ and $theta_{13} = 0$ at a zeroth order level. We claim that the $mu$-$tau$ symmetry breaking prefers a large CP violation to realize the observed value of $theta_{13}$ and to keep $theta_{23}$ nearly maximal, though an artificial choice of the $mu$-$tau$ breaking can tune $theta_{23}$, irrespective of the CP phase. We exhibit several relations among the deviation of $theta_{23}$ from $pi/4$, $theta_{13}$ and Dirac CP phase $delta$, which are useful to test the $mu$-$tau$ breaking models in the near future experiments. We also propose a concrete model to break the $mu$-$tau$ exchange symmetry spontaneously and its breaking is mediated by the gauge interactions radiatively in the framework of the extended gauge model with $B-L$ and $L_mu - L_tau$ symmetries. As a result of the gauge mediated $mu$-$tau$ breaking in the neutrino mass matrix, the artificial choice is unlikely, and a large Dirac CP phase is preferable.
The neutrino masses and mixings indicated by current neutrino oscillation experiments suggest that the neutrino mass matrix possesses an approximate $mu-tau$ exchange symmetry. In this study, we explore the neutrino parameter space and show that if a small $mu-tau$ symmetry breaking is considered, the Majorana $CP$ phases must be unequal and non-zero independently of the neutrino mass scale. Moreover, a small $mu-tau$ symmetry breaking favors quasi-degenerate masses. We also show that Majorana phases are strongly correlated with the Dirac $CP$ violating phase. Within this framework, we obtain robust predictions for the values of the Majorana phases when the experimental indications for the Dirac $CP$ phase are used.
We study the consequences of the $Z_2$-symmetry behind the $mu$--$tau$ universality in neutrino mass matrix. We then implement this symmetry in the type-I seesaw mechanism and show how it can accommodate all sorts of lepton mass hierarchies and generate enough lepton asymmetry to interpret the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. We also show how a specific form of a high-scale perturbation is kept when translated via the seesaw into the low scale domain, where it can accommodate the neutrino mixing data. We finally present a realization of the high scale perturbed texture through addition of matter and extra exact symmetries.
The various global analyses of available neutrino oscillation data indicate the presence of the standard $3+0$ neutrino oscillation picture. However, there are a few short baseline anomalies that point to the possible existence of a fourth neutrino (with mass in the eV-scale), essentially sterile in nature. Should sterile neutrino exist in nature and its presence is not taken into consideration properly in the analyses of neutrino data, the interference terms arising due to the additional CP phases in presence of a sterile neutrino can severely impact the physics searches in long baseline (LBL) neutrino oscillation experiments. In the current work we consider one light (eV-scale) sterile neutrino and probe all the three CP phases ($delta_{13}$, $delta_{24}$, $delta_{34}$) in the context of the upcoming Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) and also estimate how the results improve when data from NOvA, T2K and T2HK are added in the analysis. We illustrate the $Delta chi^2$ correlations of the CP phases among each other, and also with the three active-sterile mixing angles. Finally, we briefly illustrate how the relevant parameter spaces in the context of neutrinoless double beta decay get modified in light of the bounds in presence of a light sterile neutrino.
