It is well-known that any Lennard-Jones type potential energy must a have periodic ground state given by a triangular lattice in dimension 2. In this paper, we describe a computer-assisted method that rigorously shows such global minimality result among $2$-dimensional lattices once the exponents of the potential have been fixed. The method is applied to the widely used classical $(12,6)$ Lennard-Jones potential, which is the main result of this work. Furthermore, a new bound on the inverse density (i.e. the co-volume) for which the triangular lattice is minimal is derived, improving those found in [L. Betermin and P. Zhang, Commun. Contemp. Math., 17 (2015), 1450049] and [L. Betermin, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 48 (2016), 3236-3269]. The same results are also shown to hold for other exponents as additional examples and a new conjecture implying the global optimality of a triangular lattice for any parameters is stated.

Birkhoff normal forms are commonly used in order to ensure the so called effective stability in the neighborhood of elliptic equilibrium points for Hamiltonian systems. From a theoretical point of view, this means that the eventual diffusion can be bounded for time intervals that are exponentially large with respect to the inverse of the distance of the initial conditions from such equilibrium points. Here, we focus on an approach that is suitable for practical applications: we extend a rather classical scheme of estimates for both the Birkhoff normal forms to any finite order and their remainders. This is made for providing explicit lower bounds of the stability time (that are valid for initial conditions in a fixed open ball), by using a fully rigorous computer-assisted procedure. We apply our approach in two simple contexts that are widely studied in Celestial Mechanics: the Henon-Heiles model and the Circular Planar Restricted Three-Body Problem. In the latter case, we adapt our scheme of estimates for covering also the case of resonant Birkhoff normal forms and, in some concrete models about the motion of the Trojan asteroids, we show that it can be more advantageous with respect to the usual non-resonant ones.
We prove an asymptotic crystallization result in two dimensions for a class of nonlocal particle systems. To be precise, we consider the best approximation with respect to the 2-Wasserstein metric of a given absolutely continuous probability measure $f mathrm{d}x$ by a discrete probability measure $sum_i m_i delta_{z_i}$, subject to a constraint on the particle sizes $m_i$. The locations $z_i$ of the particles, their sizes $m_i$, and the number of particles are all unknowns of the problem. We study a one-parameter family of constraints. This is an example of an optimal location problem (or an optimal sampling or quantization problem) and it has applications in economics, signal compression, and numerical integration. We establish the asymptotic minimum value of the (rescaled) approximation error as the number of particles goes to infinity. In particular, we show that for the constrained best approximation of the Lebesgue measure by a discrete measure, the discrete measure whose support is a triangular lattice is asymptotically optimal. In addition, we prove an analogous result for a problem where the constraint is replaced by a penalization. These results can also be viewed as the asymptotic optimality of the hexagonal tiling for an optimal partitioning problem. They generalise the crystallization result of Bourne, Peletier and Theil (Communications in Mathematical Physics, 2014) from a single particle system to a class of particle systems, and prove a case of a conjecture by Bouchitt{e}, Jimenez and Mahadevan (Journal de Mathematiques Pures et Appliquees, 2011). Finally, we prove a crystallization result which states that optimal configurations with energy close to that of a triangular lattice are geometrically close to a triangular lattice.

We consider pairwise interaction energies and we investigate their minimizers among lattices with prescribed minimal vectors (length and coordination number), i.e. the one corresponding to the crystals bonds. In particular, we show the universal minimality -- i.e. the optimality for all completely monotone interaction potentials -- of strongly eutactic lattices among these structures. This gives new optimality results for the square, triangular, simple cubic (SC), face-centred-cubic (FCC) and body-centred-cubic (BCC) lattices in dimensions 2 and 3 when points are interacting through completely monotone potentials. We also show the universal maximality of the triangular and FCC lattices among all lattices with prescribed bonds. Furthermore, we apply our results to Lennard-Jones type potentials, showing the minimality of any universal minimizer (resp. maximizer) for small (resp. large) bond lengths, where the ranges of optimality are easily computable. Finally, a numerical investigation is presented where a phase transition of type square-rhombic-triangular (resp. SC-rhombic-BCC-rhombic-FCC) in dimension $d=2$ (resp. $d=3$) among lattices with more than 4 (resp. 6) bonds is observed.

We develop physically admissible lattice models in the harmonic approximation which define by Hamiltons variational principle fractional Laplacian matrices of the forms of power law matrix functions on the n -dimensional periodic and infinite lattice in n=1,2,3,..n=1,2,3,.. dimensions. The present model which is based on Hamiltons variational principle is confined to conservative non-dissipative isolated systems. The present approach yields the discrete analogue of the continuous space fractional Laplacian kernel. As continuous fractional calculus generalizes differential operators such as the Laplacian to non-integer powers of Laplacian operators, the fractional lattice approach developed in this paper generalized difference operators such as second difference operators to their fractional (non-integer) powers. Whereas differential operators and difference operators constitute local operations, their fractional generalizations introduce nonlocal long-range features. This is true for discrete and continuous fractional operators. The nonlocality property of the lattice fractional Laplacian matrix allows to describe numerous anomalous transport phenomena such as anomalous fractional diffusion and random walks on lattices. We deduce explicit results for the fractional Laplacian matrix in 1D for finite periodic and infinite linear chains and their Riesz fractional derivative continuum limit kernels.
In this paper, we consider the scattering theory for acoustic-type equations on non-compact manifolds with a single flat end. Our main purpose is to show an existence result of non-scattering energies. Precisely, we show a Weyl-type lower bound for the number of non-scattering energies. Usually a scattered wave occurs for every incident wave by the inhomogeneity of the media. However, there may exist suitable wavenumbers and patterns of incident waves such that the corresponding scattered wave vanishes. We call (the square of) this wavenumber a non-scattering energy in this paper. The problem of non-scattering energies can be reduced to a well-known interior transmission eigenvalues problem.
