Most adversarial attack methods on text classification can change the classifiers prediction by synonym substitution. We propose the adversarial sentence rewriting sampler (ASRS), which rewrites the whole sentence to generate more similar and higher-quality adversarial examples. Our method achieves a better attack success rate on 4 out of 7 datasets, as well as significantly better sentence quality on all 7 datasets. ASRS is an indispensable supplement to the existing attack methods, because classifiers cannot resist the attack from ASRS unless they are trained on adversarial examples found by ASRS.

Most adversarial attack methods that are designed to deceive a text classifier change the text classifiers prediction by modifying a few words or characters. Few try to attack classifiers by rewriting a whole sentence, due to the difficulties inherent in sentence-level rephrasing as well as the problem of setting the criteria for legitimate rewriting. In this paper, we explore the problem of creating adversarial examples with sentence-level rewriting. We design a new sampling method, named ParaphraseSampler, to efficiently rewrite the original sentence in multiple ways. Then we propose a new criteria for modification, called a sentence-level threaten model. This criteria allows for both word- and sentence-level changes, and can be adjusted independently in two dimensions: semantic similarity and grammatical quality. Experimental results show that many of these rewritten sentences are misclassified by the classifier. On all 6 datasets, our ParaphraseSampler achieves a better attack success rate than our baseline.
We provide the first exploration of text-to-text transformers (T5) sentence embeddings. Sentence embeddings are broadly useful for language processing tasks. While T5 achieves impressive performance on language tasks cast as sequence-to-sequence mapping problems, it is unclear how to produce sentence embeddings from encoder-decoder models. We investigate three methods for extracting T5 sentence embeddings: two utilize only the T5 encoder and one uses the full T5 encoder-decoder model. Our encoder-only models outperforms BERT-based sentence embeddings on both transfer tasks and semantic textual similarity (STS). Our encoder-decoder method achieves further improvement on STS. Scaling up T5 from millions to billions of parameters is found to produce consistent improvements on downstream tasks. Finally, we introduce a two-stage contrastive learning approach that achieves a new state-of-art on STS using sentence embeddings, outperforming both Sentence BERT and SimCSE.
In this work, we take the first steps towards building a universal rewriter: a model capable of rewriting text in any language to exhibit a wide variety of attributes, including styles and languages, while preserving as much of the original semantics as possible. In addition to obtaining state-of-the-art results on unsupervised translation, we also demonstrate the ability to do zero-shot sentiment transfer in non-English languages using only English exemplars for sentiment. We then show that our model is able to modify multiple attributes at once, for example adjusting both language and sentiment jointly. Finally, we show that our model is capable of performing zero-shot formality-sensitive translation.

Paraphrase generation is an important task in natural language processing. Previous works focus on sentence-level paraphrase generation, while ignoring document-level paraphrase generation, which is a more challenging and valuable task. In this paper, we explore the task of document-level paraphrase generation for the first time and focus on the inter-sentence diversity by considering sentence rewriting and reordering. We propose CoRPG (Coherence Relationship guided Paraphrase Generation), which leverages graph GRU to encode the coherence relationship graph and get the coherence-aware representation for each sentence, which can be used for re-arranging the multiple (possibly modified) input sentences. We create a pseudo document-level paraphrase dataset for training CoRPG. Automatic evaluation results show CoRPG outperforms several strong baseline models on the BERTScore and diversity scores. Human evaluation also shows our model can generate document paraphrase with more diversity and semantic preservation.
This work improves monolingual sentence alignment for text simplification, specifically for text in standard and simple Wikipedia. We introduce a convolutional neural network structure to model similarity between two sentences. Due to the limitation of available parallel corpora, the model is trained in a semi-supervised way, by using the output of a knowledge-based high performance aligning system. We apply the resulting similarity score to rescore the knowledge-based output, and adapt the model by a small hand-aligned dataset. Experiments show that both rescoring and adaptation improve the performance of knowledge-based method.
