In this paper, we design an efficient quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal detector for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems via the penalty-sharing alternating direction method of multipliers (PS-ADMM). Its main content is as follows: first, we formulate QAM-MIMO detection as a maximum-likelihood optimization problem with bound relaxation constraints. Decomposing QAM signals into a sum of multiple binary variables and exploiting introduced binary variables as penalty functions, we transform the detection optimization model to a non-convex sharing problem; second, a customized ADMM algorithm is presented to solve the formulated non-convex optimization problem. In the implementation, all variables can be solved analytically and in parallel; third, it is proved that the proposed PS-ADMM algorithm converges under mild conditions. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

For massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) detection has been shown to achieve near-optimal performance but suffers from excessively high complexity due to the large-scale matrix inversion. Being matrix inversion free, detection algorithms based on the Gauss-Seidel (GS) method have been proved more efficient than conventional Neumann series expansion (NSE) based ones. In this paper, an efficient GS-based soft-output data detector for massive MIMO and a corresponding VLSI architecture are proposed. To accelerate the convergence of the GS method, a new initial solution is proposed. Several optimizations on the VLSI architecture level are proposed to further reduce the processing latency and area. Our reference implementation results on a Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T FPGA for a 128 base-station antenna and 8 user massive MIMO system show that our GS-based data detector achieves a throughput of 732 Mb/s with close-to-MMSE error-rate performance. Our implementation results demonstrate that the proposed solution has advantages over existing designs in terms of complexity and efficiency, especially under challenging propagation conditions.

Accurate channel state information (CSI) feedback plays a vital role in improving the performance gain of massive multiple-input multiple-output (m-MIMO) systems, where the dilemma is excessive CSI overhead versus limited feedback bandwith. By considering the noisy CSI due to imperfect channel estimation, we propose a novel deep neural network architecture, namely AnciNet, to conduct the CSI feedback with limited bandwidth. AnciNet extracts noise-free features from the noisy CSI samples to achieve effective CSI compression for the feedback. Experimental results verify that the proposed AnciNet approach outperforms the existing techniques under various conditions.
Estimation in few-bit MIMO systems is challenging, since the received signals are nonlinearly distorted by the low-resolution ADCs. In this paper, we propose a deep learning framework for channel estimation, data detection, and pilot signal design to address the nonlinearity in such systems. The proposed channel estimation and data detection networks are model-driven and have special structures that take advantage of the domain knowledge in the few-bit quantization process. While the first data detection network, namely B-DetNet, is based on a linearized model obtained from the Bussgang decomposition, the channel estimation network and the second data detection network, namely FBM-CENet and FBM-DetNet respectively, rely on the original quantized system model. To develop FBM-CENet and FBM-DetNet, the maximum-likelihood channel estimation and data detection problems are reformulated to overcome the vanishing gradient issue. An important feature of the proposed FBM-CENet structure is that the pilot matrix is integrated into its weight matrices of the channel estimator. Thus, training the proposed FBM-CENet enables a joint optimization of both the channel estimator at the base station and the pilot signal transmitted from the users. Simulation results show significant performance gain in estimation accuracy by the proposed deep learning framework.

The power consumption of digital-to-analog converters (DACs) constitutes a significant proportion of the total power consumption in a massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) base station (BS). Using 1-bit DACs can significantly reduce the power consumption. This paper addresses the precoding problem for the massive narrow-band MU-MIMO downlink system equipped with 1-bit DACs at each BS. In such a system, the precoding problem plays a central role as the precoded symbols are affected by extra distortion introduced by 1-bit DACs. In this paper, we develop a highly-efficient nonlinear precoding algorithm based on the alternative direction method framework. Unlike the classic algorithms, such as the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and squared-infinity norm Douglas-Rachford splitting (SQUID) algorithms, which solve convex relax

We propose an uplink massive MIMO system using an array of holographic metasurfaces as a sector antenna. The antenna consists of a set of rectangular waveguide-fed metasurfaces combined along the elevation direction into a planar aperture, each with subwavelength-sized metamaterial elements as radiators. The metamaterial radiators are designed such that the waveguide-fed metasurface implements a holographic solution for the guided (or reference) mode, generating a fan beam towards a prescribed direction, thereby forming a multibeam antenna system. We demonstrate that a narrowband uplink massive MIMO system using the metasurfaces can achieve the sum capacity close to that offered by the Rayleigh channel at 3.5 GHz. We show that metasurfaces supporting multiple fan beams can achieve high spatial resolution in the azimuth directions in sub-6 GHz channels, and thereby form uncorrelated MIMO channels between the base station and users. Also, the proposed metasurface antenna is structurally simple, low-cost, and efficient, and thus is suitable to alleviate RF hardware issues common to massive MIMO systems equipped with a large antenna system.
