We study the morphology of the stellar periphery of the Magellanic Clouds in search of substructure using near-infrared imaging data from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS). Based on the selection of different stellar populations using the ($J-K_mathrm{s}$, $K_mathrm{s}$) colour-magnitude diagram, we confirm the presence of substructures related to the interaction history of the Clouds and find new substructures on the easter side of the LMC disc which may be owing to the influence of the Milky Way, and on the northern side of the SMC, which is probably associated to the ellipsoidal structure of the galaxy. We also study the luminosity function of red clump stars in the SMC and confirm the presence of a bi-modal distance distribution, in the form of a foreground population. We find that this bi-modality is still detectable in the eastern regions of the galaxy out to a 10 deg distance from its centre. Additionally, a background structure is detected in the North between 7 and 10 deg from the centre which might belong to the Counter Bridge, and a foreground structure is detected in the South between 6 and 8 deg from the centre which might be linked to the Old Bridge.

We provide a homogeneous set of structural parameters of 83 star clusters located at the periphery of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The clusters stellar density and surface brightness profiles were built from deep, AO assisted optical images, and uniform analysis techniques. The structural parameters were obtained from King and Elson et al. model fittings. Integrated magnitudes and masses (for a subsample) are also provided. The sample contains mostly low surface brightness clusters with distances between 4.5 and 6.5 kpc and between 1 and 6.5 kpc from the LMC and SMC centres, respectively. We analysed their spatial distribution and structural properties, comparing them with those of inner clusters. Half-light and Jacobi radii were estimated, allowing an evaluation of the Roche volume tidal filling. We found that: (i) for our sample of LMC clusters, the tidal radii are, on average, larger than those of inner clusters from previous studies; (ii) the core radii dispersion tends to be greater for LMC clusters located towards the southwest, with position angles of $sim$200 degrees and about $sim$5 degrees from the LMC centre, i.e., those LMC clusters nearer to the SMC; (iii) the core radius evolution for clusters with known age is similar to that of inner clusters; (iv) SMC clusters with galactocentric distances closer than 4 kpc are overfilling; (v) the recent Clouds collision did not leave marks on the LMC clusters structure that our analysis could reveal.
We propose a combination of a modified Wide-Fast-Deep survey, a mini-survey of the South Celestial Pole, and a Deep Drilling-style survey to produce a 3-D map of the Magellanic System and to provide a detailed census of the transient and variable populations in the Clouds. We support modifying the Wide-Fast-Deep survey to cover the declination range $-72.25deg<{rm Dec}<12.4deg$ and the Galactic latitude range $|b|>15deg$, as proposed in a separate white paper. We additionally propose a mini-survey covering the 950$deg^2$ with ${rm Dec} < -72.25$ in $ugriz$ to the standard LSST single-exposure depth and with 40 visits per filter per field. Finally, we propose a mini-survey covering $sim100 deg^2$ of the main bodies of the Clouds with twelve total pointings, 2000 total visits per field, and shorter exposure time.

The aim of the project is to improve our current knowledge of the density of T dwarfs and the shape of the substellar initial mass function by identifying a magnitude-limited sample of T dwarfs in the full southern sky. We present the results of a photometric search aimed at discovering cool brown dwarfs in the Southern sky imaged at infrared wavelengths by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) and the Wide Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite mission. We combined the first data release (DR1) of the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and the WISE preliminary data release to extract candidates with red mid-infrared colours and near- to mid-infrared colours characteristics of cool brown dwarfs. The VHS DR1 vs WISE search returned tens of T dwarf candidates, 13 of which are presented here, including two previously published in the literature and five new ones confirmed spectroscopically with spectral types between T4.5 and T8. We estimate that the two T6 dwarfs lie within 16 pc and the T4.5 within 25 pc. The remaining three are 30-50 pc distant. The only T7 dwarf in our sample is the faintest of its spectral class with J=19.28 mag. The other six T dwarf candidates remain without spectroscopic follow-up. We also improve our knowledge on the proper motion accuracy for three bright T dwarfs by combining multi-epoch data from public databases (DENIS, 2MASS, VHS, WISE, Spitzer).
The zero point of the reddening toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been the subject of some dispute. Its uncertainty propagates as a systematic error for methods which measure the extragalactic distance scale through knowledge of the absolute extinction of LMC stars. In an effort to resolve this issue, we used three different methods to calibrate the most widely-used metric to predict LMC extinction, the intrinsic color of the red clump, $(V-I)_{RC,0}$, for the inner $sim$3 degrees of that galaxy. The first approach was to empirically calibrate the color zeropoints of the BaSTI isochrones over a wide metallicity range of ${Delta}rm{[Fe/H]} approx 1.10$ using measurements of red clump stars in 47 Tuc, the Solar Neighborhood, and NGC 6791. From these efforts we also measure these properties of the Solar Neighborhood red clump, ($V-I$, $G_{BP}-K_{s}$, $G-K_{s}$, $G_{RP}-K_{s}$, $J-K_{s}$, $H-K_{s}$, $M_{I}$, $M_{Ks}$)$_{RC,0} =$ (1.02, 2.75, 2.18, 1.52, 0.64, 0.15, $-$0.23, $-$1.63). The second and third methods were to compare the observed colors of the red clump to those of Cepheids and RR Lyrae in the LMC. With these three methods, we estimated the intrinsic color of the red clump of the LMC to be $(V-I)_{RC,0,rm{LMC}} = { approx 0.93,0.91 pm 0.02,0.89 pm 0.02}$ respectively, and similarly using the first and third method we estimated $ (V-I)_{RC,0,rm{SMC}} = {approx 0.85,0.84 pm 0.02 }$ respectively for the Small Magellanic Cloud. We estimate the luminosities to be $M_{I,RC,rm{LMC}}=-0.26$ and $M_{I,RC,rm{SMC}}=-0.37$. We show that this has important implications for recent calibrations of the tip of the red giant branch in the Magellanic Clouds used to measure $H_0$.
We have demonstrated the advantage of combining multi-wavelength observations, from the ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared, to study Kron 3, a massive star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have estimated the radius of the cluster Kron 3 to be 2.0 and for the first time, we report the identification of NUV-bright red clump (RC) stars and the extension of the RCin colour and magnitude in the NUV vs (NUV-optical) colour-magnitude diagram (CMD). We found that extension of the RC is an intrinsic property of the cluster and it is not due to contamination of field stars or differential reddening across the field. We studied the spectral energy distribution of the RC stars and estimated a small range in temperature ~5000 - 5500K, luminosity ~60 - 90 Land radius ~8.0 - 11.0 Supporting their RC nature. The range of UV magnitudes amongst the RC stars (~23.3 to 24.8 mag) is likely caused by the combined effect of variable mass loss, variation in initial helium abundance (Y_ini=0.23 to 0.28), and a small variation in age (6.5-7.5 Gyr) and metallicity ([Fe/H]=-1.5 to -1.3). Spectroscopic follow-up observations of RC stars in Kron 3 are necessary to confirm the cause of the extended RC.
