The aerial-terrestrial communication system constitutes an efficient paradigm for supporting and complementing terrestrial communications. However, the benefits of such a system cannot be fully exploited, especially when the line-of-sight (LoS) transmissions are prone to severe deterioration due to complex propagation environments in urban areas. The emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) has recently become a potential solution to mitigate propagation-induced impairments and improve wireless network coverage. Motivated by these considerations, in this paper, we address the coverage and link performance problems of the aerial-terrestrial communication system by proposing an RIS-assisted transmission strategy. In particular, we design an adaptive RIS-assisted transmission protocol, in which the channel estimation, transmission strategy, and data transmission are independently implemented in a frame. On this basis, we formulate an RIS-assisted transmission strategy optimization problem as a mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) to maximize the overall system throughput. We then employ multi-task learning to speed up the solution to the problem. Benefiting from multi-task learning, the computation time is reduced by about four orders of magnitude. Numerical results show that the proposed RIS-assisted transmission protocol significantly improves the system throughput and reduces the transmit power.
This paper proposes to deploy multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in device-to-device (D2D)-underlaid cellular systems. The uplink sum-rate of the system is maximized by jointly optimizing the transmit powers of the users, the pairing of the cellular users (CUs) and D2D links, the receive beamforming of the base station (BS), and the configuration of the RISs, subject to the power limits and quality-of-service (QoS) of the users. To address the non-convexity of this problem, we develop a new block coordinate descent (BCD) framework which decouples the D2D-CU pairing, power allocation and receive beamforming, from the configuration of the RISs. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the power allocation and receive beamforming under any D2D-CU pairing, which facilitates interpreting the D2D-CU pairing as a bipartite graph matching solved using the Hungarian algorithm. We transform the configuration of the RISs into a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) with multiple quadratic constraints. A low-complexity algorithm, named Riemannian manifold-based alternating direction method of multipliers (RM-ADMM), is developed to decompose the QCQP into simpler QCQPs with a single constraint each, and solve them efficiently in a decentralized manner. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the sum-rate of the D2D-underlaid system with a reduced complexity, as compared to its alternative based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR).
In this letter, we propose to employ reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for enhancing the D2D underlaying system performance. We study the joint power control, receive beamforming, and passive beamforming for RIS assisted D2D underlaying cellular communication systems, which is formulated as a sum rate maximization problem. To address this issue, we develop a block coordinate descent method where uplink power, receive beamformer and refection phase shifts are alternatively optimized. Then, we provide the closed-form solutions for both uplink power and receive beamformer. We further propose a quadratic transform based semi-definite relaxation algorithm to optimize the RIS phase shifts, where the original passive beamforming problem is translated into a separable quadratically constrained quadratic problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RIS assisted design significantly improves the sum-rate performance.
In wireless systems aided by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), channel state information plays a pivotal role in achieving the performance gain of RISs. Mobility renders accurate channel estimation (CE) more challenging due to the Doppler effect. In this letter, we propose two practical wideband CE schemes incorporating Doppler shift adjustment (DSA) for multi-path and single-path propagation environments, respectively, for RIS-assisted communication with passive reflecting elements. For the multi-path scenario, ordinary CE is first executed assuming quasi-static channels, followed by DSA realized via joint RIS reflection pattern selection and transformations between frequency and time domains. The proposed CE necessitates only one more symbol incurring negligible extra overhead compared with the number of symbols required for the original CE. For the single-path case which is especially applicable to millimeter-wave and terahertz systems, a novel low-complexity CE method is devised capitalizing on the form of the array factors at the RIS. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms yield high CE accuracy and achievable rate with low complexity, and outperform representative benchmark schemes.
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a promising solution to reconfigure the wireless environment in a controllable way. To compensate for the double-fading attenuation in the RIS-aided link, a large number of passive reflecting elements (REs) are conventionally deployed at the RIS, resulting in large surface size and considerable circuit power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new type of RIS, called active RIS, where each RE is assisted by active loads (negative resistance), that reflect and amplify the incident signal instead of only reflecting it with the adjustable phase shift as in the case of a passive RIS. Therefore, for a given power budget at the RIS, a strengthened RIS-aided link can be achieved by increasing the number of active REs as well as amplifying the incident signal. We consider the use of an active RIS to a single input multiple output (SIMO) system. {However, it would unintentionally amplify the RIS-correlated noise, and thus the proposed system has to balance the conflict between the received signal power maximization and the RIS-correlated noise minimization at the receiver. To achieve this goal, it has to optimize the reflecting coefficient matrix at the RIS and the receive beamforming at the receiver.} An alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Specifically, the receive beamforming is obtained with a closed-form solution based on linear minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion, while the reflecting coefficient matrix is obtained by solving a series of sequential convex approximation (SCA) problems. Simulation results show that the proposed active RIS-aided system could achieve better performance over the conventional passive RIS-aided system with the same power budget.
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising reflective radio technology for improving the coverage and rate of future wireless systems by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. The current work mainly focuses on the physical layer design of RIS. However, enabling multiple devices to communicate with the assistance of RIS is a crucial challenging problem. Motivated by this, we explore RIS-assisted communications at the medium access control (MAC) layer and propose an RIS-assisted MAC framework. In particular, RISassisted transmissions are implemented by pre-negotiation and a multi-dimension reservation (MDR) scheme. Based on this, we investigate RIS-assisted single-channel multi-user (SCMU) communications. Wherein the RIS regarded as a whole unity can be reserved by one user to support the multiple data transmissions, thus achieving high efficient RIS-assisted connections at the user. Moreover, under frequency-selective channels, implementing the MDR scheme on the RIS group division, RISassisted multi-channel multi-user (MCMU) communications are further explored to improve the service efficiency of the RIS and decrease the computation complexity. Besides, a Markov chain is built based on the proposed RIS-assisted MAC framework to analyze the system performance of SCMU/MCMU. Then the optimization problem is formulated to maximize the overall system capacity of SCMU/MCMU with energy-efficient constraint. The performance evaluations demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of each
